To make a complaint against cashier at supermarket?

I have an invisible disability (neurological) and I was made to feel really small and stupid during our shop visit today. I have only recently began joining my husband and children on the weekly shop again run to rebuild my confidence after an operation.

The cashier was scanning very quickly and the shopping was piling up before my husband was able to get to it. I was keeping an eye on our son (who has special needs and is prone to running off)

She remarked to me, in a way I can only describe as sarcastically, that I should help him.

Following this, because we were paying for the shopping in two parts (because I was using a healthy start card for my fruit and vegetables) she then commented to me again that I should have just used that card in the first part of the shop. That part of the shopping totalled £68, it wouldn't have worked because there was only £17 on the healthy start card IE enough for the fruit and veg only.

I felt put on the spot and under pressure as I stood there trying to work out if I had made a mistake. Other people in the queue were looking at me and I was embarrassed.

My processing isn't very quick and I can only do things the way that I know them. It took my husband explaining to me after we left the shop that she was wrong and the way I did it was fine as it would have been declined if I had done as she said I should

I'm generally a very laid back person and this is the first time I've ever felt the need to make a complaint like this but I left the shop feeling humiliated, judged and very small.

Don’t worry, in a couple of years all tills will be self service and no one will have to deal with a human again.

Most supermarkets are replacing old style tills with self checkouts and encouraging customers to use the scan and pay facility.

Retail workers will then just stack shelves and have less interaction with customers.

Then no one will have to deal with a “sarcastic” cashier again.

YellowDots · 01/04/2024 16:10

The other customers were probably looking at you as there were two adults and at least two children doing one shop and then doing two transactions. It was probably annoying for them.

No, I'm giving my opinion, just like everyone else on here.

This is a discussion forum, not a dictatorship where everyone has to agree with you.

But how can you be so sure she wasn't being rude when you was not there to hear it. You are assuming, I was there.

None of these are a cashiers business the op was looking after her child trying to cope with her disability and keep herself together. She doesn't have to help pack and she can make 2 transactions if she wants to.

As she did. The cashier can also comment if she wants to, it wasn't nearly as offensive as op has chosen to take it.

I don't think anyone thinks otherwise.

The cashier is perfectly within their rights to say "you know you can do X instead, there's no need to do two transactions" Confused

You don't get to decide what offends somebody.

Except she didn't.

She waited until after the fact to tell me what I should have done.

I'd have no problem with her helpfully suggesting I can do it in a different way. What I have a problem with is being spoken to in the way I did.

You don't get to decide what offends somebody.

Just like you don't get to decide what is objectively offensive, as opposed to what you've chosen to take offence at.

How patronising are you. Disabled people are entitled to use supermarkets. Do you want to send us all back to the asylums so you can shop in peace?

Mountain out of a molehill OP.

There wasn't really any unsolicited comments made. It's not anyone's fault how you interpret things and your feelings. It does sound like you are looking for an arguement in retaliation because as per your words, you felt stupid.

Nsky62 · 01/04/2024 16:16

Next time speak up, tell her politely. What I do, I have Parkinson’s, make her think, she was probably quite rushed.
customers need to be more patient too

You don't get to decide what offends somebody.

Well yes, that's what she's saying. Confused

You are saying far more rude things than the cashier - in some people's opinion. Including mine. And you don't get to decide what offends somebody.

Of course I'm making an assumption - the same as everyone else on this thread.

All I have to go off is what you've written and nothing you've said makes me think she was rude, and I'm not the only one who feels that way.

There's no need to get so defensive - does it really matter if random people on a forum don't agree with you?

I'm not serving you in a shop!

Oh, you are raring for a bit of aggro, op. It's pretty clear how the supermarket saga played out 😬

LoopyLooooo · 01/04/2024 16:17

'Unsolicited' comments??

Should the silly little cashier woman only speak when she's spoken to? 🙄

Don't be ridiculous. But if you don't want people talking to you, avoid shops.

I'm out of order but PP is fine suggesting me and my DS don't go into supermarkets and perhaps go to the park instead, you can't be serious.

Oh for the love of green apples… fine OP complain, write a sternly worded letter, stand outside with a big sign.

What do you want from this thread? If we all say she was rude and you’re a victim of some weird ableist agenda will you let it drop?

The problem isn't people just talking to me but you knew that already.

Gah. I give in. I'm unreasonable and you're all right.
