The noise of summer

With apologies to Don Healy for the title.

The clocks have changed, it's stopped raining and now it seems my neighbours' children on both sides seem to spend all afternoon and now into the evening bouncing on the trampolines they have taking over their garden or kicking footballs or throwing netballs or maybe a basketball all over the place. One side the parents were mowing the lawn at about 10 am and then the other side at 11am. Then the kids must have come out after their lunch and it's been non stop child noise. This is how every weekend is be isn't it now, until autumn. I don't understand why neighbours A and B can't at least agree to coordinate the time they mow their lawns so I get some break from it all. The noise just goes on and on and probably will until about 8pm this week getting longer and longer as the days get longer. This is just the start and I'm already fed up. May they will no doubt be out there even later if they have bbqs like they did last year. They seem to have coal ones so not only do I smell the meat but also the horrible stink of the coal and smoke too

Would I be unreasonable to ask them to bring their children in about 6pm so I can at least have some peace in the evening and to mow their lawns during the week so I can enjoy my weekends without the horrible noise of a lawn mower? I won't say anything about their BBQs until it actually happens as I don't want to give them ideas.

You sound fun.

Mumof3confused · 31/03/2024 19:32

10am and 11am isn’t really unsociable hours to be mowing the lawn. As for locking the kids inside at 6pm - this is quite nuts and you do realise this is a forum for parents?

exerciseshmexercise · 31/03/2024 19:36

I've just cut my grass this afternoon around 6. Sorry OP.

Dontbringthenoise · 31/03/2024 19:38

I'm not saying lock them in but I think 5 hours in the garden is probably quite enough for them. People would be very angry if I let my dogs go out and bark for 5 hours and yet it's ok for children to be bouncing and shouting and all the squeaky trampoline noises for this long!?

OP posts:
skippy67 · 31/03/2024 19:38

You're joking, right?

Pigwidgeon99 · 31/03/2024 19:40

5 hours outside having fun is brilliant! Would it be better for them to be inside on screens? Parents can't win, honestly. Remember you were a child once.

skippy67 · 31/03/2024 19:40

I think you should move house. To somewhere with no neighbours.

EG94 · 31/03/2024 19:42

Just part and parcel of life isn’t it? Kids are fucking annoying no doubt about it but me personally I am aware of other people’s enjoyment so tell my dogs to shut up and the kids to keep it down. Luckily I hear my kid neighbour do the same. I wouldn’t ask anyone to get their kids in just as my kid neighbours mum works nights, I don’t see them asking me not to cut the grass because the wife is asleep. I’m a petty cow too so if someone asked me to keep it down or curtail an activity when I’m not doing anything wrong, I’d instruct the kids to be as annoying as possible 😂

floppybit · 31/03/2024 19:43

Yes, definitely go round and tell them they need to schedule their lawn mowing and bring their kids in a 5, that's not unreasonable at all 🙄

Exactly this. Honestly how long does the mowing go on for? You sound like a barrel of laughs. Anything else people are not allowed to do in their own homes?

Well when the 10am man finished and put everything away I got about what seemed like 5 minutes and then the other one started around 11. We have very large lawns here front and back.
Would it be unreasonable to ask them to move their trampolines further down the lawn away from my patio to reduce the noise. Are their parents somehow immune to the noise. I don't have children just my dogs. My husband is working away so I won't say anything until he comes back in case they get aggressive about it

Yabu and should move to a remote area.

Dontbringthenoise · 31/03/2024 19:50

The children are still out there now. It's almost 8 pm. Is it perhaps worse because they have been hyped up on Easter eggs. At least they didn't do an egg hunt in the garden this year. Last year was unbearable with the squealing and cheering each time someone found a cheap chocolate egg.

Is this a joke? 🤣

exerciseshmexercise · 31/03/2024 19:51

It's still light here and it's Easter holidays - honestly OP, you're not coming across well.

watermanserenity · 31/03/2024 19:51

You sound utterly miserable. Move to an isolated area, you'll be doing everyone a favour.

concernedchild · 31/03/2024 19:51

YABU.

TheChippendenSpook · 31/03/2024 19:53

I thought you were joking but it appears that you're not.

zurg123 · 31/03/2024 19:53

Today is the first full dry day we've had in what feels like months. The sounds of the kids laughing in the neighbouring gardens was lovely, and overdue.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 31/03/2024 19:54

My neighbour has been mowing all day. At least the bloody thing is done and he won't be doing it tomorrow. Sorry, OP. I've come to realise that some people are a lot more sensitive to sound than others are, and barbecues are horrible for neighbours too You can't expect people to not enjoy their properties, although some people seem to be very inconsiderate. But in your case, since it's making you miserable, I'd move.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 31/03/2024 19:55

I think you need to move somewhere with no neighbours. Mowing lawns and kids playing outside when the weather is good enough is perfectly normal and reasonable behaviour.

It's your behaviour that is off kilter.

RipleyGreen · 31/03/2024 19:56

I have a lot of sympathy for you, OP. There’s a chap around my way with Tourette’s who just stands shouting and screeching for hours and endless hours whenever the sun is out, this is it now until October. It’s depressing.

An egg hunt was unbearable? Come on OP. You really do sound quite miserable. When do you cut your grass? Do you coordinate with your neighbours? Be reasonable.

As a parent of 3 young kids who always tells them to keep their voices down as others are trying to enjoy their gardens, they are also trying to enjoy theirs and have been stuck indoors for 4 or 5 months now.

Felicityshoelace · 31/03/2024 19:57

Are you living amongst family sized houses? If so, you must have expect neighbours to have children. Maybe you should of chosen a small house with tiny garden that or a bungalow where the elderly live if you cannot afford a home with no neighbours.
