The noise of summer

With apologies to Don Healy for the title.

The clocks have changed, it's stopped raining and now it seems my neighbours' children on both sides seem to spend all afternoon and now into the evening bouncing on the trampolines they have taking over their garden or kicking footballs or throwing netballs or maybe a basketball all over the place. One side the parents were mowing the lawn at about 10 am and then the other side at 11am. Then the kids must have come out after their lunch and it's been non stop child noise. This is how every weekend is be isn't it now, until autumn. I don't understand why neighbours A and B can't at least agree to coordinate the time they mow their lawns so I get some break from it all. The noise just goes on and on and probably will until about 8pm this week getting longer and longer as the days get longer. This is just the start and I'm already fed up. May they will no doubt be out there even later if they have bbqs like they did last year. They seem to have coal ones so not only do I smell the meat but also the horrible stink of the coal and smoke too

Would I be unreasonable to ask them to bring their children in about 6pm so I can at least have some peace in the evening and to mow their lawns during the week so I can enjoy my weekends without the horrible noise of a lawn mower? I won't say anything about their BBQs until it actually happens as I don't want to give them ideas.

Honestly OP it sounds like you aren't happy in general. Nothing to do with the kids. But you are using that as a focus point.

People can enjoy their gardens as they please. Normally people complain kids don't go outside enough. People commenting like yours is probably why kids stay inside.

I'm always paranoid we are going to upset the neighbours and I do tell the kids to e quieter when needed. But they are kids. I'm not keeping them inside for hours on end so you can sit quietly in your garden for hours on end.

If you have neighbours you have to accept there will be noise. If you don't like it then it might be time to relocate.

You would hate us. My kids and the neighbours kids share a fence when we don't, God forbid play all together in the cul de sac, they play catch over the fence together.

We have told neighbours to let us know if our kids are ever too loud and no one seems bothered. There's no danger of a ball going in the wrong garden based on how we are set up.

The older couple sit out to hear the kids down the road. Not everyone likes complete scilence.

LakeTiticaca · 31/03/2024 21:34

We moved into our house 30 years ago, its a mixture of 2/3/4 bed semis and detached, witha sprinkling of bungalows. Main residents, like us, were young families. There was one grumpy middle aged couple who used to complain on summer evenings about kids playing out. I responded to them like I will respond to the OP, if you want silence, don't move onto a family estate. My children have all grown up and flown the nest now, but still plenty of young families coming along. I have no problem hearing the kids enjoying themselves in the summer, people mowing lawns, BBQs are a bit if a pain if your washing is on the line but hey how, its life.
I'm so glad I don't live anywhere near you OP, you sound like a miserable old Grinch 😂😂

Hyacinth? Is that you?

Summer isn't just for children. Adults are allowed to enjoy it too you know. I think all afternoon from midday to 6 pm is perfectly ok for children time and then after that they should accept it's time for adults to be able to enjoy their gardens. I'd expect children to be getting ready for bed or even in bed at 8pm. The children next door are around 9 or 10.

I am not elderly, I paid a lot of money for this house because it is detached and has a large garden. I pay a lot for the man to come and mow it during the week when I am out at work. Perhaps the neighbours could mow during the week rather than during the time we all want to relax and enjoy ourselves. I'm sure if you're in little semis or terraces with small gardens you can't understand how long it takes to mow a large garden, it just goes on and on.

My son works nights shifts. Your gardener mowing when you can't hear it could disturb him. Should we come round and tell you not to mow during the day?

9-10 year olds going to bed at 8pm? Are you having a laugh? OP if you didn't want to hear the sound of people living their lives you shouldn't have bought a family house on a busy street!

You sound like one of those CFers who buy a house next to a church and then complain about the church bells, or next to a school and then complain about parents' parking. 🙄

ListenLinda · 31/03/2024 21:40

Yes, you would be unreasonable.

maddiemookins16mum · 31/03/2024 21:43

Don’t worry, it’s due to piss it down all week, the wains will be back inside on their tablets.

The two pre-teen boys in the garden at the bottom of ours were out today, chatting, doing something with sticks and generally amusing themselves, it was the first time I’d heard them in months and I did think to myself how nice. Give it 4 years and they’ll be holed up in their bedrooms.

HotChocWine · 31/03/2024 21:43

Are you my neighbour OP?

Everyone can use their outside space as they wish

I was just saying to DH this evening I can't wait till it warms up for evenings in the garden

xyz111 · 31/03/2024 21:45

Perhaps they work all week so can't mow their lawns then?
I'm sorry Op, you sound a miserable old woman. Yes I don't like noise either, but complain about an Easter egg hunt is just ridiculous.

ElaineMBenes · 31/03/2024 21:48

Perhaps the neighbours could mow during the week rather than during the time we all want to relax and enjoy ourselves.

And if they work during the week....🤷🏼‍♀️

ListenLinda · 31/03/2024 21:50

I hope this is a wind up to be honest, because surely no one can be this miserable.

inappropriateraspberry · 31/03/2024 21:53

I was so pleased my children were able to get outside and play this afternoon! Nothing better than hearing children playing outside. I live near a primary school and love hearing them at lunch.
When do you mow your lawn? I doubt the neighbours are bothered though - we all have to do it at some point and mid morning is a pretty reasonable time.

EdithArtois · 31/03/2024 21:55

I’m with you. God forbid anyone should have to tell their little darlings to put a sock in it for a bit! DIY neighbours here. Relentless power tool use in the garden from now until Oct. Have to leave the premises if I want to sunbathe in peace. Once I accepted that I can stop feeling so angry so now I just head out. Rubbish but you only have to read the responses here to see what kind of people you are up against 😂

Happyandglorious98 · 31/03/2024 22:00

I hope every child in ur street terrorise you with screaming n shouting till all hours

Happyandglorious98 · 31/03/2024 22:00

That's unnecessary. There's no need for screaming and shouting. The OP is complaining about the sounds that come with living in a community.

NewName24 · 31/03/2024 22:05

I'm with the 91%.
YABVVU.

Summer isn't just for children. Adults are allowed to enjoy it too you know.

I'm an adult. I don't have small children anymore, but I LOVE the sounds of children playing outside, enjoying themselves.
I also love the sound of a lawn being cut. It's just such a Summer sound.

OP, you are really being ridiculous.

JustJessi · 31/03/2024 22:13

If you are unable to move house to a very rural location and must therefore tolerate neighbours, try and change your perspective OP. Your neighbours sound like they’re living very busy lives, maintaining their gardens nicely, and providing their kids with ample space, time and outdoor toys. They could be lazy types with overgrown, disgusting, litter-filled gardens and children sitting outside on iPads on full volume all day

lpylou · 31/03/2024 22:16

I can certainly sympathise with neighbours which drive you mad. This doesn't sound reasonable though. In comparison we live in London in terrace housing and small gardens and had our neighbours children smashing the football against the fence from February until September, the noise reverberated around the house and went through every nerve in our body. As the children got older the kicks got stronger and louder.
If we wfh the rooms backing into garden were unworkable from 4pm each day when they would come home screaming, kicking the football, fighting.... I ended up knocking on their door one day and blaming the after school nanny, saying the fence wasn't a problem at weekends just when we were trying to work. Eventually a year after I knocked on it stopped, in total after 4 years. Last summer I could hear them being told off and telling each other off if one of them hit our fence.

I used to live next to a church and loved the bells. And I knew they would chime. I wasn't expecting screaming kids on trampolines for 5 hours every weekend.
They didn't have the egg hunt this year. Perhaps the other neighbours complained, I've heard quieter fox hunts (I don't hunt I've just driven past them)

Honestly this is the second thread I've read in days moaning about normal neighbour noise. Go live on the moon op or somewhere far far away from other YABU

Overthebow · 31/03/2024 22:30

I live heating kids enjoying themselves in summer and lawn mowing reminds me of summer so I don’t mind it. Why shouldn’t my DC be able to enjoy an evening bbq for dinner?

HulaChick · 31/03/2024 22:30

Ffs, you are insane. Not to mention a lot of other things.

menopausalmare · 31/03/2024 22:33

Jet washers and weed smokers by open doors are another summer irritation.
But the biggest irritation of all are the super loud moped groups that buzz up and down the roads like giant mosquitoes.

I mow my lawn on a weekend because that’s when I’m off work.

or I could do it after I’ve fed my children their tea at about 7pm now the nights are getting lighter, which one would you prefer?

YABU. You choose to live in a residential area with families either side of you. What do you expect? Would you prefer them indoors on their iPads?
