The noise of summer

With apologies to Don Healy for the title.

The clocks have changed, it's stopped raining and now it seems my neighbours' children on both sides seem to spend all afternoon and now into the evening bouncing on the trampolines they have taking over their garden or kicking footballs or throwing netballs or maybe a basketball all over the place. One side the parents were mowing the lawn at about 10 am and then the other side at 11am. Then the kids must have come out after their lunch and it's been non stop child noise. This is how every weekend is be isn't it now, until autumn. I don't understand why neighbours A and B can't at least agree to coordinate the time they mow their lawns so I get some break from it all. The noise just goes on and on and probably will until about 8pm this week getting longer and longer as the days get longer. This is just the start and I'm already fed up. May they will no doubt be out there even later if they have bbqs like they did last year. They seem to have coal ones so not only do I smell the meat but also the horrible stink of the coal and smoke too

Would I be unreasonable to ask them to bring their children in about 6pm so I can at least have some peace in the evening and to mow their lawns during the week so I can enjoy my weekends without the horrible noise of a lawn mower? I won't say anything about their BBQs until it actually happens as I don't want to give them ideas.

Surely nobody in real life is this intolerant to normal amounts of household noise? If you genuinely can’t cope with your neighbours you need to move somewhere more remote.

daisychain01 · 31/03/2024 19:58

With apologies to Don Healy for the title

do you mean Don Henley?

or maybe Dennis Healy 😂

OhmygodDont · 31/03/2024 19:58

It’s the first school holiday of spring where the weather isn’t bloody terrible. You get the whole of winter for your silence 😂 wanting synced lawn cutting and children in for 6pm.

Lighter nights is what children wait for clear ish skies and light so it’s not just sat in, because it’s cold wet and dark.

Sorry but you sound miserable, don't you have anything of your own to focus on instead of your neighbours? Maybe you should move somewhere in the middle of nowhere with no neighbours....although by the sounds of it you'd probably find something to complain about! Cows mooing probably

Ilovemyshed · 31/03/2024 20:02

I hate other people's nouse, especially other people's kids. We moved to a rural village with no neighbours.

You cannot police other people.

liveforsummer · 31/03/2024 20:03

Are you taking the piss? I'd understand if they were mowing at 6am and the kids were out til midnight. Of course you would be v v v unreasonable to suggest keeping them in from 6. 😆. I think you need to move somewhere remote!

The children are still out there now. It's almost 8 pm. Is it perhaps worse because they have been hyped up on Easter eggs. At least they didn't do an egg hunt in the garden this year. Last year was unbearable with the squealing and cheering each time someone found a cheap chocolate egg.

You know it's not April Fools until tomorrow right?

Didimum · 31/03/2024 20:03

Oh dear, OP. You’re being exceptionally unreasonable. Sorry. Dogs should not be continually barking. Children should be enjoying time outside and people should be maintaining their lawns – a very poor comparison.

Felicityshoelace · 31/03/2024 20:03

Please don't ask your neighbours to do this, you'll be known by the nickname Crosspatch as we called a complaining old sourpuss neighbour.

FoxyLoxyLoo · 31/03/2024 20:05

The winter is really long when children are cooped up a lot with dark nights and miserable weather, they need fresh air and it’s just families enjoying the better weather. You sound very intolerant.

Bigoldmachine · 31/03/2024 20:05

When do you mow your very large front and back lawns? Maybe you should fit in with their time schedule.

Cosycover · 31/03/2024 20:05

Bet you're fun at parties 🥳

liveforsummer · 31/03/2024 20:06

Oh and if it helps the rain is back tomorrow for the rest of the week so I'm sure you'll have peace again in no time

Summer isn't just for children. Adults are allowed to enjoy it too you know. I think all afternoon from midday to 6 pm is perfectly ok for children time and then after that they should accept it's time for adults to be able to enjoy their gardens. I'd expect children to be getting ready for bed or even in bed at 8pm. The children next door are around 9 or 10.

I am not elderly, I paid a lot of money for this house because it is detached and has a large garden. I pay a lot for the man to come and mow it during the week when I am out at work. Perhaps the neighbours could mow during the week rather than during the time we all want to relax and enjoy ourselves. I'm sure if you're in little semis or terraces with small gardens you can't understand how long it takes to mow a large garden, it just goes on and on.

I am playing ‘Bitch about my Neighbors Bingo’ and just waiting for the wind chime and hot tub squares to be filled.

Icantbedoingwithit · 31/03/2024 20:08

My neighbour used to let her kids out on a trampoline 6.30 every single morning without fail in all weathers. Drove me absolutely insane.

Unwantedadvice · 31/03/2024 20:08

Bloodyhell it's a hard life isn't it?!

OhmygodDont · 31/03/2024 20:09

Never said it’s just for children. But this is pretty much the first holiday from school where it’s nice. Also it’s a bloody weekend of course adults are going to be out cutting lawns / trimming hedges etc it’s been dark after work mostly!

icelolly12 · 31/03/2024 20:09

YABU to complain on the first decent weekend which happens to be easter bank holidays so of course people are catching up on jobs in their garden and enjoying time outdoors. It's a time to feel uplifted and happy.

We've just come out of about 5 months of grey, dreary, rainy, cold hibernation!

OhmygodDont · 31/03/2024 20:10

Oh and I know how long it takes to mow the lawn mines well over an hour just for the rear. But I do it when I feel not when my neighbours would like to demand 😂😂

Unwantedadvice · 31/03/2024 20:11

This is comedy gold well done OP! The replies are fabulous. Cheered me right up this

Ineffable23 · 31/03/2024 20:12

I opened this thread, thinking it was going to be a joyous thread about how things are opening up and the hum that starts as it warms up and the sun comes out. I went out the other evening and the town was getting busier again. The light is changing now the clocks have changed.

I love the noise of summer.

Yeah right. Nice try.
