The noise of summer

With apologies to Don Healy for the title.

The clocks have changed, it's stopped raining and now it seems my neighbours' children on both sides seem to spend all afternoon and now into the evening bouncing on the trampolines they have taking over their garden or kicking footballs or throwing netballs or maybe a basketball all over the place. One side the parents were mowing the lawn at about 10 am and then the other side at 11am. Then the kids must have come out after their lunch and it's been non stop child noise. This is how every weekend is be isn't it now, until autumn. I don't understand why neighbours A and B can't at least agree to coordinate the time they mow their lawns so I get some break from it all. The noise just goes on and on and probably will until about 8pm this week getting longer and longer as the days get longer. This is just the start and I'm already fed up. May they will no doubt be out there even later if they have bbqs like they did last year. They seem to have coal ones so not only do I smell the meat but also the horrible stink of the coal and smoke too

Would I be unreasonable to ask them to bring their children in about 6pm so I can at least have some peace in the evening and to mow their lawns during the week so I can enjoy my weekends without the horrible noise of a lawn mower? I won't say anything about their BBQs until it actually happens as I don't want to give them ideas.

😂😅😆Thanks for giving me a good laugh OP

TulipCat · 31/03/2024 20:14

Ooh, you would have been apoplectic round my house today OP. I had the audacity to power wash all my paving at 10am. I do it one day per year and I never co-ordinate with any of the neighbours.

GoingOnHol · 31/03/2024 20:14

Would it be unreasonable to ask them to move their trampolines further down the lawn away from my patio to reduce the noise.

I actually think this is ok to ask, but in a diplomatic way. Our neighbours have a trampoline which is far away from any other houses/fences (weird layout so bordered by 4/5 gardens).

Maybe your neighbours are at work during the week as you are and therefore need to mow theirs at the weekend...

saltinesandcoffeecups · 31/03/2024 20:14

Let’s see… My neighborhood has large lawns to cut in the summer… lot’s of trees to blow leaves in the fall with leaf blowers and snow to be blown with snow blowers in the winter…. The kids across the street have a basketball hoop in the drive and usually have all their friends over to play in the summer…we used to have the barky dog of the ‘hood now it’s the family behind us.

Damn it appears I won’t get the pleasure of living next the OP ☹️

Oh and if it helps the rain is back tomorrow for the rest of the week so I'm sure you'll have peace again in no time

And so now I've missed the chance to enjoy my garden in the spring sunshine due to the noise of others. This is my point.

Wish we had some sunshine here, our 'monsoon season' on the dear old Wight, starts end of september and this year looks like it's going into mid april.
Rain, rain and more rain.
We moved away from neighbours that were normal loud. It's very quiet here but oh, so wet. Then daft hot and dry in summer, someone lights a bbq and it's almost a mardi gras as it's unusual. 😀
Sorry, OP not being helpful I know .

I opened this thread, thinking it was going to be a joyous thread about how things are opening up and the hum that starts as it warms up and the sun comes out. I went out the other evening and the town was getting busier again. The light is changing now the clocks have changed.

I love the noise of summer.

I did think that too, although did suspect it had a 50/50 chance of being a joyful thread or a moaning thread lol

needsomewarmsunshine · 31/03/2024 20:18

OP re; title It's 'Boys of Summer' by Don Henley, been my fave track since I first heard it.

TulipCat · 31/03/2024 20:19

It sounds like you can't really cope with normal neighbour noise. I have a friend like that. She moved to rural Australia and is loving it. May I recommend a similar move for you?

I'm not saying lock them in but I think 5 hours in the garden is probably quite enough for them. People would be very angry if I let my dogs go out and bark for 5 hours and yet it's ok for children to be bouncing and shouting and all the squeaky trampoline noises for this long!?

OMG. You need to accept you live in a community. Neighbours have no obligation to coordinate their mowing for your benefit or to usher their kids inside at your preferred time, get over yourself.

Itisnearlyspring · 31/03/2024 20:37

I think you should offer to pay for your gardener to mow your neighbours lawns during the week so everyone can relax at the weekend.

Pickingmyselfup · 31/03/2024 20:40

I enjoy the sound of summer, it all just kinds of blends into to one big white noise hum.

We cut our grass yesterday, didn't co-ordinate with anyone because why would we, it's a lawnmower, not a drum and bass disco.

Many people will be starting to do outdoors DIY and who can blame them, things need doing and so we we wait for the nice weather to arrive so we can do them.

I can be a full on grumpy cow when it suits but I also realise that people are entitled to live their lives as long as they aren't being twats and I don't count cutting their grass as being a twat.

awitchoftroubleinelectricblue · 31/03/2024 20:42

The sounds of spring and summer are like a new lease of life after a long and soggy and dull winter. Everyone comes back outside and I love it.

OnceUponARainbow88 · 31/03/2024 20:43

I think mowing the lawn on Easter Sunday is a bit shitty but other than that sorry OP I think you’re being unreasonable

user1496146479 · 31/03/2024 20:44

You want the neighbours to cordinate the time they mow their lawns?! GrinGrinGrin
You are not only totally unreasonable, but are batshit!
During the school term, my kids are only heading out play in our garden around 6, as we both work FT, and by the time we get homework etc done it's at least 6pm

Sunflowers098 · 31/03/2024 20:45

OP I'm with you! My neighbours grandchildren scream at the tops of their voices from 12-7 every day in the summer holidays, then the parents scream at the kids, then when the kids have gone they let the dog out and it barks for 2 hours non stop. It all drives me crazy. It's relentless.

Chonkadoodle · 31/03/2024 20:45

Children are allowed to have fun in their own back gardens OP.

You sound fun.

This...🙄

daisychain01 · 31/03/2024 20:47

I'm sure if you're in little semis or terraces with small gardens you can't understand how long it takes to mow a large garden, it just goes on and on.

ay, I dreeeeeeeeam of being in a little semi. Luxury.

Shoe-box in middle o' road ....

Panpastels · 31/03/2024 20:49

I assume you're taking the piss, but if you aren't then please just move to a remote island somewhere Grin. Although I'm sure the animal noises would annoy you.

purpleme12 · 31/03/2024 20:49

This can't be real 🤣🤣

AussiUnHomme · 31/03/2024 20:49

If you work hard you might be able to afford a house with fewer neighbours OP.

Fuck off with the comparisons of dogs to children. They're human beings in their own garden.
