The noise of summer

With apologies to Don Healy for the title.

The clocks have changed, it's stopped raining and now it seems my neighbours' children on both sides seem to spend all afternoon and now into the evening bouncing on the trampolines they have taking over their garden or kicking footballs or throwing netballs or maybe a basketball all over the place. One side the parents were mowing the lawn at about 10 am and then the other side at 11am. Then the kids must have come out after their lunch and it's been non stop child noise. This is how every weekend is be isn't it now, until autumn. I don't understand why neighbours A and B can't at least agree to coordinate the time they mow their lawns so I get some break from it all. The noise just goes on and on and probably will until about 8pm this week getting longer and longer as the days get longer. This is just the start and I'm already fed up. May they will no doubt be out there even later if they have bbqs like they did last year. They seem to have coal ones so not only do I smell the meat but also the horrible stink of the coal and smoke too

Would I be unreasonable to ask them to bring their children in about 6pm so I can at least have some peace in the evening and to mow their lawns during the week so I can enjoy my weekends without the horrible noise of a lawn mower? I won't say anything about their BBQs until it actually happens as I don't want to give them ideas.

Summer isn't just for children. Adults are allowed to enjoy it too you know. I think all afternoon from midday to 6 pm is perfectly ok for children time and then after that they should accept it's time for adults to be able to enjoy their gardens. I'd expect children to be getting ready for bed or even in bed at 8pm. The children next door are around 9 or 10.

I am not elderly, I paid a lot of money for this house because it is detached and has a large garden. I pay a lot for the man to come and mow it during the week when I am out at work. Perhaps the neighbours could mow during the week rather than during the time we all want to relax and enjoy ourselves. I'm sure if you're in little semis or terraces with small gardens you can't understand how long it takes to mow a large garden, it just goes on and on.

And the same sentiments for the ‘I paid a lot of money for this’ comments. You’re not the first or last person to do so.

The children are still out there now. It's almost 8 pm. Is it perhaps worse because they have been hyped up on Easter eggs. At least they didn't do an egg hunt in the garden this year. Last year was unbearable with the squealing and cheering each time someone found a cheap chocolate egg.

Are you ok?

43ontherocksporfavor · 31/03/2024 20:55

It’s Don Henley. Just sayin….

ilovesooty · 31/03/2024 20:55

It's ordinary family and community noise. You're being unreasonable.

Dontbringthenoise · 31/03/2024 20:55

I'm not sure what your baby has to do with the
noise I am experiencing but your husband does seem to spend a lot of time away from you.

In Germany it is prohibited in residential areas to mow lawns or wash your cars or make too much noise on Sundays because they understand people need a day of peace and quiet. Are those of you calling me unreasonable saying that the population of Germany is also unreasonable.
These children will have two weeks of holidays from school and then another week in May. I will be at work then so I don't think it's too much to ask that one weekend day the noise levels are reduced. Their parents could take them out for the day perhaps. I'm sure I've seen national trust badges on their cars. Let them run around the grounds squealing instead.

Move to Germany 🇩🇪 😂

TeaPleaseX · 31/03/2024 20:58

I won't be bringing my kids in at 6. Even if you asked nicely my gardens for our enjoyment also.

My kids can go outside from 9 till whenever they like. We also have bbqs most weekends. If you hate noise so much buy ear plugs or don't have neighbours!

Maybe their parents who likely have been working all week, actually want to enjoy some time in their home.....,, just like you OP?

WhatFlavourIsIt · 31/03/2024 20:58

Yes, you would be unreasonable. I have all the same sounds around me. It's wonderful, like the world is waking up and coming back to life.

EatCrow · 31/03/2024 20:59

Dontbringthenoise · 31/03/2024 19:38

I'm not saying lock them in but I think 5 hours in the garden is probably quite enough for them. People would be very angry if I let my dogs go out and bark for 5 hours and yet it's ok for children to be bouncing and shouting and all the squeaky trampoline noises for this long!?

You’re in for it…..brace yourself! 😉

Move there then.

It's March.

I must have missed the Don Henley classic - The noise of Summer.

GreenWheat · 31/03/2024 21:04

Ooh goody, MN has added a new form of seasonal moaning. Just when we're over Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas, now we can add Spring?

ssd · 31/03/2024 21:11

We've been here over 25 years. With neighbours who have recently got a dog that gets let out the back at 6am to bark. Wakes us all up. Tried speaking to them but they will have none of it, dog must get out to pee early doors.

Am demented..

And so now I've missed the chance to enjoy my garden in the spring sunshine due to the noise of others. This is my point.

Get a pair of noise-cancelling headphones and sit out in your garden. Problem solved.

Shan5474 · 31/03/2024 21:29

I don’t mind garden and power tools. Even when my neighbour cut his grass at 7pm today (what is he prepping for?). I also don’t mind children playing. It’s the screaming and shouting that I can’t deal with. The kids are no more than a metre away from each other but I can hear every word inside my house. Also the same when they play music in the summer, the speaker is right next to them but I end up with trap music in the background of my Zoom meetings

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 31/03/2024 21:31

Yes. You would be very unreasonable.

An egg hunt unbearable?!

Good grief.

do you mean Don Henley?

or maybe Dennis Healy 😂

🤣🤣🤣

Beetlejuiceismydad · 31/03/2024 21:33

Have you ever thought that when you pay your terribly expensive gardener to mow your vast, vast lawn that you might be annoying someone.
Perhaps your neighbours are working from home? Perhaps you are their nightmare neighbour?
Also having a big lawn doesn't make you rich. I have a huge garden and I live in an ex local authority house on a huge council estate.
I let my kids out in the garden as soon as they wake up until dark.
Oh and I have German relatives, kids are not expected to be quiet on a Sunday. It's more of a way of promoting family time rather than a mandated day of silence. HTH.
