How to appear rich?

happyasharry · 31/03/2024 17:58

I know this is crazy and it's a million miles away from how I normally think but I have a reunion coming up soon and I don't want to be the 'poor' one.
We have a 3 bed semi, a 3 year old Volvo and we're really strapped at the moment. I have a college reunion soon and most of my friends have travelled the globe, found rich spouses and live the dream.
Anyway, for one night only I want to appear like them. I love my life and I am proud of what we have achieved as a family but this is playing on my mind. Any idea how I can achieve this and just fit in a bit?

But she has to talk. You can tell money when it talks. Schooling, holidays, housing,it’s not just clothes and shoes. Nearly all of us can tell money when we see it.

Depends how good a lier she is, that’s what this would come down to.

NeverNameChange · 01/04/2024 10:43

It won't work op, just be yourself.

Weirdly, people often assume dp is very posh /rich but he isn't in the slightest. I have no idea why. He comes from a very working class background and works in a very average job. It must be some kind of 'quality' that he has

StolenCookie · 01/04/2024 11:34

I think the “really rich people are scruffy” advice is misguided. That is only for the seriously, generationally wealthy. You can’t fake that, because unless you’re born into it you don’t know the subtle mannerisms, ways of talking, way of life etc. I don’t think OP is trying to convince a bunch of aristocrats that she’s landed gentry, she just wants to come across like she’s made a success of herself.

@PropertyManager

or just say you invented Post-Its

You're about the 20th to say that on this thread.

Will someone explain what it's about?

Its from the film Romy & Michelles high school reunion, the one pretending to be rich says she invented Post Its.

In the US the story of the invention of Post Its is very well known (chemist at 3M tasked with formulating a strong glue messed up and made a very low tack glue, he took a pot home and his wife started using it to stick notes to the fridge) so it would be a ridiculous lie.

Gosh..I'm rich..( no bragging was a huge compensation pay out).. but to look at me l don't appear rich.. yes l like to dress good and have my hair done.. and no money worries. But true friends won't be bothered one way or another.

Absolutely this is my experience,

if I had to explain how the truly wealthy dress to people who do not know , the most recognisable would be like the royals. It’s the easiest and most accessible explanation, be it Harry Megan, William, Kate or if older, Charles, Camilla.

Nothing is branded , nothing is flashy, nothing is done in unless they are gardening or,pottering, but it’s the cut and material. The shoes, the hair, the bags, the discreet jewellery, You know it is expensive and not markies or primark.

people have these odd stereotypes in their heads, and then argue blind wealthy people all walk around in old done in clothing.

My family was well off when I grew up and it was a point of contention that my dad wouldn’t change his clothes if we were going anywhere nice. All his clothes came from cheap shops and usually had food down it, literally exactly like the stereotype 😭

Thanks.

I didn't know the film reference, but do know the 3M history well - I do consulting work for them and it's one of the sections on a timeline display they have at one of the offices I visit in the US, which is what piqued my interest.

dullestofall · 01/04/2024 12:04

you dont love your life

AlpineMuesli · 01/04/2024 12:06

Define rich.

daliesque · 01/04/2024 12:07

God don't ask that in here! You'll be told to wear shabby clothes, wellies and turn up in an old, Labrador infested estate car.

Just wear what you normally wear for a night out. Don't try and be something you're not and don't want to be. Be proud of what you have achieved.

Femme2804 · 01/04/2024 12:36

@BronzeAge yeah uniform like rich guys. But even mark Zuckerberg always use tshirt. But its brunello cucinelli. I dont think that type of rich guys buying their tshirt from H&M. Trust me rich people like their quality. Even if they dint like flashing but you can tell cheap tshirt vs designer ones.

MiddleParking · 01/04/2024 13:02

Most of the rich men I know wear fucking awful clothes and not because they’re ‘scruffy’ or old. They’re smart, clean and new, just dreadful looking.

I can assure you that the richest man I recently spent a week around (between London, Cape Town and Franschoek, for a wedding) was wearing unbranded shorts and T-shirts. He has no interest in his appearance, and he doesn’t need to. Crammed into an ill-fitting suit for the wedding ceremony (he was father of the bride), the rest of the time wearing a look you could buy in a supermarket. He’s the one in the boardroom in baggy shorts, whose power you recognise, not just because he’s a ruthless operator, but because he’s the one who doesn’t have to try. He’s on top of the triangle, with the people in designer gear courting him. It’s dressing like a slob as a power display.

(He lived in London for nearly 20 years before getting on the Tube. My DH took him on the Piccadilly Line and claimed he was like Arthur Weasley when he and Harry go to the Ministry of Magic on the underground.😀)

It’s a bit sad that none of your college friends made their own money and only became rich through marriage.

Very good point.

Can't imagine men going to a reunion and competing over who'd got the best watch, or whatever, bought with their wife's money.

she didn’t say that, you simply assumed it.

hotpotlover · 01/04/2024 16:11

See, this is why I never ever go to reunions- it's basically a bragging event to show off how far you've come

cherish123 · 01/04/2024 16:15

Rich people don't tend to wear designer clothing.

Shiningout · 01/04/2024 16:28

What happens if you decide to meet up with someone again if you hit it off at the reunion? If you go and lie about things then you're going to be found out anyway, and if you don't plan on seeing anyone ever again there's no point in lying because who gives a shit if someone judges you. I get wanting to look your best but I definitely wouldn't be trying to pretend I'm something I'm not.

No, it's totally a thing. Has been for years. Rich people are 'secure' in their wealth, so don't feel the need to outwardly display it.

DanielGault · 01/04/2024 16:54

I'm sure lots do. Equally I've known some who don't.

SunnySunnySunny · 01/04/2024 16:57

Hire an outfit.

Get a blow dry

lose weight if you need too.

Get any dental work done that needs doing.

DanielGault · 01/04/2024 17:07

I'm not UK based (what's a hunt ball?) so I've never been to any of these things. I can only respond from my terribly boring, rather poor perspective.
