To have asked him to choose a different sandwich

Don't know if it's because it's Easter or what but my local co-ops sandwich section was totally barren, only meat sandwiches left (I'm vegetarian). I saw a man go for the last cheese one there was, so I asked him if he was vegetarian and if not, would he mind if I had it? A woman (wife?) appeared and went batshit at me and called me rude.
It made me quite pissed off actually. I wouldn't have a problem with say a gluten free person asking me if they could have the last gluten free sandwich.
WIBU?

@ScroogeMcDuckling if you don't sit on leather sofas, what do you do when you visit someone's house and they have one? I'm imagining you squat hovering over it, in "a using a toilet at a manky service station" sort of style.

I don't actually have leather sofas myself as I hate skin sticking to it, but I'm still interested.

Have you being chatting to my husband, apparently that’s exactly what I’m like :-):-)

I am vegetarian, have been since a student, many years ago.

cheese except Edam and others made with oil, are off limits because the vast majority of cheese is made with animal rennet - vegetable rennet is still a minority, niche market, microbial rennet uses the genes of an animal, and yet most of the world still doesn’t require vegetarian items to be labelled, hoping that has changed now!

Cheese also uses milk as an ingredient, which as we all know, cows are on running machines these days, not forgetting the anti biotics that are given
to the cows for a variety of reasons, one to keep them lactating.

I do not wear leather shoes, sit on a leather sofa, have leather clothing or accessories due to where leather comes from.

Eggs are also off limits to me, due to the environment that commercial hens live in, I eat eggs from the chickens in my back garden though.

im not a vegan, but over the years have worked out what to buy and what not to buy.

stork margarine to have fish oil in, I really don’t like the thought of killing the fish in my aquarium so I can eat abit of marg!

also washing powders etc is ecover in our house.

I personally don’t agree with any form of animal products in commercial vegetarian/vegan food, because I don’t feel comfortable with some animal husbandry in farming

Again the vast majority of cheese in the UK is vegetarian and is labelled as such.

Pick up any cheese in the supermarket and 9 times out of 10 it will be labelled vegetarian.

Reading this thread it's pretty clear to me now how we ended up with a brexit vote

Eh?

Stardust1985 · 31/03/2024 11:06

YABU. I'm a coeliac and often there are no gluten free options left. If I saw someone take the last GF sandwich in a shop in front of me I would think, 'i wish I'd been here a minute earlier '. I absolutely wouldn't ask them if they needed it and whether I could have it instead!

Busybee44 · 31/03/2024 11:06

Wow you are so rude! I would not have dared ask anyone to do that!

We will have to agree to disagree on this one.

Statistics or just your say so?

It shows a mistrust and fear of others/strangers. It also shows that when the option is there to make a connection that might mean everyone leaves happy, Outraged in Surrey would prefer you say nothing at all and leave empty handed with no debate.

I was sort of on your side, as I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask politely if he minded. But this shit is unhinged weirdness.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 31/03/2024 11:10

Maybe most of the supermarket cheeses are suitable for vegetarians, perhaps less of the varieties that exist and are found in proper cheese shops will be? Lots of supermarket cheese is a bit rank anyway.

Seaside3 · 31/03/2024 11:12

Such a weird comparison with brexit.

I think you were rude. And I voted remain. I'd argue you sound like a bredit supporter, only considering your own feelings/needs/desires and not those of the people around you.

And actually, I'm glad the woman told you you were rude. I'm tired of people being so entitled and it's time we started pointing it out. Maybe you will be more prepared next time and realise your wants don't trump someone else's.

Caerulea · 31/03/2024 11:41

ScroogeMcDuckling · 31/03/2024 10:21

Most (99%) cheeses use rennet to bind,

Not animal rennet. It's not 1980

Everythinggreen · 31/03/2024 11:42

Medsy · 31/03/2024 08:53

So, never have an innocuous conversation with anyone as it might cause somebody to have a breakdown and never visit a supermarket again?
Yeah, thanks but I won't be taking your advice!

You read what the poster said about her mum and what it would be like, and that's your response.

You really are a nasty, self centred, entitled woman. I hope you always miss out on the cheese sandwiches.

Oh and additionally, you can't preach your "philosophical" or "ethical" reasons for not eating meat, while moaning about wanting a dairy product! So you think people are wrong for eating cows, but you don't think breeding sentient beings just to hold in captivity in cramped barns, hit, abused, restrained, force impregnated then have their calfs ripped from them so that YOU can have their milk for your cheese sandwich.

Bet you voted Brexit.

ChipsCheeseAndGravey · 31/03/2024 11:47

I think this is a case of askers vs guessers at its core. I do think maybe playing the veggie card was a bit off, but to be honest it wouldn’t have bothered me.

asker - don’t ask don’t get, normal to say no
guesser - only ask if you think the answer will be yes

The OPs response drives me Batshit- why start an AIBU but then not accept when they are being told they are.
yes you are rude but to be honest if that needs to be pointed out to you it’s not going to change so crack on.
I wouldn’t have had a go at you but I certainly wouldn’t have swapped sandwiches with you unless the shop was completely empty apart from 1 meat sandwich and 1 cheese sandwich

Juicesausagecake · 31/03/2024 11:57

I think the OP has a sense of humour and was just game enough to engage with the replies.

I suspect, actually, that most of these replies are bots. The vocabulary (unhinged, weird, batshit, entitled) is too limited to be human. And it cycles round and round like an algorithm. Mumsnet should sort it out.

I don't mind being called weird, unhinged or bat shit, but the entitled baffles me! Fair enough if I'd demanded it, but I still don't understand why asking nicely if something is an option would be entitled.

Why don’t you just ask user44456c?

exerciseshmexercise · 31/03/2024 12:42

@Medsy again. Why does your "philosophy" of vegetarianism trump, in your mind, my disability related reasons for wanting a cheese sandwich?

likepebblesonabeach · 31/03/2024 12:55

@Medsy I'm not new here, oldest DC is 20 but I agree with PP, why start an AIBU if you don't think you are?
You obviously dont think you are, which is absolutely your right to your own opinion but why do you feel the need to come on to an internet forum to have your opinion validated if you are so sure YANBU?
I find this bizarre, you don't want to accept others opinions who have taken the time to reply to your question, remember not one of these posters gave you their opinions unsolicited, you asked a question which was totally irrelevant as it seems you don't think you were BU so why the need to start a thread and ignore the responses that you asked for.

So many folk are saying OP was entitled because she was!

I'm a vegan and I vote yabu.

Ahhh did you not realise you get first dibs on prepackaged snacks? Just come straight out and ask them if they eat meat or not! If they answer yes then that disqualifies them from vegan snacks

@Medsy

lol I do not wanna make a “connection” when I’m trying to do a food shop
