Aibu to ask if you have a famous DH

Does it bother you? I have a semi famous DH, he gets paid to gig and go on podcasts etc if we go out locally he does get asked for selfies so we tend to go away for weekends as a family.

I do find it slightly annoying but I guess it pays the bills 💃

And one MN who isn't on here anymore (at least under the name they were) was related to Leona Lewis iirc.

Was it her Uncle Gary, who's a plumber in Romford? He's well-known himself for his sensible advice that he always gives customers wanting to maximise the efficiency of their radiators: "Keep bleeding, love!"

My DH also gets sponsored

You gave him a tenner for the local sponsored walk, didn't you.

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/03/2024 14:30

He's a very well known and international DJ, and has been since the 90's. He started on pirate radio stations and illegal raves and now gets to headline festivals worldwide. He is already booked through to the end of next year.

Which one of these is your DH?

I'm not going to name him.

💃

So why is he charging a primary school£200 to DJ for the end of year six disco then?

ChanelNo19EDT · 30/03/2024 14:46

VerySmileySarah · 30/03/2024 14:50

This. It's incredibly tacky to charge for time or whatever the 200 is for. My dd attends a catholic school with fetes yearly. There are actually some semi famous relatives related to the kids. Band members of a pretty well known Mexican band, a popular local celebrity and a dj as well. None of them would dream of charging.

ChanelNo19EDT · 30/03/2024 15:00

I'm picturing the op, Amanda from motherland style , dancing at the end of year sixth form disco to drank en drogs by lil kleine

Thepeopleversuswork · 30/03/2024 15:02

My DH is really well known locally, and in Europe. I'd hate it if he was really well know nationwide tbh.

Is he a David Hasselhoff impersonator? Big in Germany and Frinton-on-Sea? (and a complete nonentity everywhere else?

This thread is comedy gold. Please don’t ever stop OP.

My DH is close friends with both.

Lovely chaps you're right ✅️

I think by 'close friends' you mean he's played at a venue/festival where they've all played a few times. Groove and Fabio are very close friends (almost like brothers) and they're basically from a certain part of London (SW) which is pretty tight and I think either you know them or you don't. They keep a fairly low profile. So many people (especially if you're from this area), either want a piece of you, or fame through you, so I'm not surprised by this, but if you do know them, you don't go around shouting about it. The man I know who's a DJ (not naming him and he's not famous at all, apart from maybe semi famous in the soul scene) he does soul stuff, and he knows them because he's from the same area and has known them from teenage years.

Colin Dale, Dave Angell, Booker T are all DJ's who were around with them in their pirate radio days (from Groove's wiki), so if you're married to them good on you.

I really just can't understand (like others here) why you'd want to know from other MNers if their DH is famous and if so have they got unwanted attention or tips on how to deal with it? It really does sound like a sad little humble brag.

Yep, most DJ's I know, if it's a local primary school, they do it for free. It's a nice community gesture. Not a way to rinse the local school (who are cash strapped probably anyway) of money.

K8ate · 30/03/2024 15:10

I’m married to Sting.
What more can I possibly add????

WitchesAndBitches · 30/03/2024 15:12

BirthdayRainbow · 29/03/2024 21:07

I don't. Thankfully. I wouldn't want people to think I got my value from who I married.

Sadly BR so many women still do. Shocking isn't it!

notagain18 · 30/03/2024 15:14

My DH is a soap 'star' we regularly get pointed at in restaurants and people often come over to have their photograph taken either him

Lifeomars · 30/03/2024 15:19

I had a famous BIL when I was married, people used to ask me to get tickets for his gigs, I used to have to break it to them gently that while he was an incredible singer and performer he was an unpleasant man and difficult to approach.

Anyotherdude · 30/03/2024 15:23

We have a beautiful dog: every time we take her out for her walk, she is recognised by many, and commented on by many more people for her looks!
Everyone wants to talk to her and stroke her: this morning I happened to be walking her on my own when a complete stranger walked past and greeted her with a smile and a “good morning”…
I guess I also have the knowledge that I am not the celebrity in this partnership🤣

flamebrick · 30/03/2024 15:23

I realise I'm quite late to the thread and it's most likely a wind up, but for once I do have something potentially interesting to add to an AIBU thread! 🤣

When I first started going out with DH, he was in a niche but popular band in Asia. It was the early 2000s and they had a number of hit alternative records in the local country's charts. It doesn't really affect us now as the band broke up and is far past their heyday, but at the time there was certainly a lot of weird and wonderful aspects of the relationship.

We had to be very careful about being seen together too often as the record label had a "morality clause" which forbade sex and relationships (!). Especially as I was a foreigner.

He tended not to be recognised outside as the band wore quite elaborate make up. It was strange seeing postcards etc of DH and people talking about how they fancied him, when he didn't really look much like that at all in real life. The magazines were soooo airbrushed it was almost comical.

It was weird hearing his songs at first, but after a while I'd heard them so many times I started to tune them out.

There was a totally different fan culture in his country, which meant he spent a lot of time advertising skincare and other random things that had nothing to do with the band or their music. He tended not to get most of the fanmail though as the label held onto it for the band to open on video.

Howling at that, Bachman Turner Overdrive will now be stuck in my head all day!

Stickinthemuddle · 30/03/2024 15:25

Really famous yes, I always get asked about him especially when he’s up for parole (preens)

My FIL used to be a local councillor so was often stopped by people to complain about bins/parking/grass verges. 😂

Sorry but that is really funny 😂

My ex was on Record Breakers. His class broke an amazing record- most kids doing roly polys dressed as clowns.
Amazing. Can't believe he chose to go out with me!
True fact about Record Breakers though.

Waitingfordoggo · 30/03/2024 15:32

Oooh that’s interesting @flamebrick. Is your DH Korean?

Sorry for the double post, hit send too early!

He actually made a lot less money than people expected, as the contract heavily favoured the record company. And then the band members had to split the profits amongst themselves. People who knew us back then are shocked by how little we actually made from the whole thing.

It was a lot of fun watching their gigs and we got to visit lots of places. But ultimately we did spend a lot of time apart, and I'm glad that that's not our life anymore.
