I bought some fish and chips tonight for two people.
It came to £36!

I ordered 2 fish and chips (£14.90 each), 2 soft drinks, and 2 little pots of ketchup.

I haven't ordered it in a while, I remember it being £6 for fish and chips! Am I out of touch?? 😆

I just checked our local and I think it's gone up recently. It's now £10.30 pp for haddock and chips. Which is cheap as chips imo.

Fridgefreezermagnets · 29/03/2024 19:59

I bought 4 lots of fish and chips plus a mushy peas for £37 at the coast this week.
A fish and chips at my local is £7.

SocksAndTheCity · 29/03/2024 20:00

About £9 for medium haddock with chips and large mushy peas in my (northern) home town.

Anything up to £16-18 quid for a comparable order here in central London, although that would include delivery charges.

Turefu · 29/03/2024 20:02

I paid £34.60 for 3 fish and chips, two curry sauces and one tartar sauce. More expensive area of North, in the middle of Yorkshire.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 29/03/2024 20:03

About a tenner for a piece of fish here and four or five quid for chips. South London.

A1ia · 29/03/2024 20:03

It is about £10 a head in our local chippy for fish and chips...
Papa's is amazing though; they do take away boxes for around £7 which feature a fish, chips, a choice of peas/gravy/sauce and an extra ( small sausage, fishcake etc). Two of those will feed our family happily so we tend to indulge when nearby.

But, we have generally shifted "down" to cheaper options if we do indulge now. Rag pudding, (homemade) cheese and onion pie, a jumbo sausage and two portions of chips - feeds a family of three for about £16.

justasmalltownmum · 29/03/2024 20:04

It's £17 here for one piece of cod and chips!!

PTSDBarbiegirl · 29/03/2024 20:05

@BellaTheDarkOverlord @Hellocatshome ah hah! Thank you, a butty here would be a buttered roll, love these variations! Now want a chippie. There is one here that's between £11-15 depending on order usually scallops, haddock or cod with lemon and minted peas & fresh tartare. Another is £8.50 for haddock supper (with chips) classic Italian family chippie.

NC03 · 29/03/2024 20:07

£6.50

Meadowfinch · 29/03/2024 20:08

Haddock and small chips is £8.99 where I live.

Devilshands · 29/03/2024 20:08

£16 for two large battered cod and chips near me! But I am on the coast.

onwardandupwards · 29/03/2024 20:12

Large cod and chips here with a wedge of lemon and sauce is £9.50, free delivery and free bottle of coke if spend over £20, but we are surrounded by takeaways lots of competition.

ByKindOpalPoet · 29/03/2024 20:13

Last time I went it was £26 for large chips, steak and kidney pie, burger, kids chicken nuggets meal, southern fried chicken, two gravy and curry sauce.

They also do a mixed box for 8.50 (9.50 with a bottle of pop) which is chips, 2 scallops, mini fish, fish cake, sausage, thigh/drumstick, 2 wings and a large sauce.

medianewbie · 29/03/2024 20:13

@OrangeBlossomsinthesun I was just coming to post that article. £10 for a fish supper here. Southeast Scotland.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 29/03/2024 20:14

DS1 and I have just cooked fish and chips from scratch for DH’s birthday ( he is a big fan but there aren’t any good chippies near us). Just worked out how much it cost - about £15 for 4. Huge faff but delicious!

Oooh whats Rag Pudding?

FourInABedSheSaid · 29/03/2024 20:15

2x fish and chips. 2x Savloy and chips.
£34! I nearly had a heart attack. It was a new chippy, so wanted to try it out. Fish wasn’t great but chips were nice. So we’ll go back for that.

Iam4eels · 29/03/2024 20:16

I just paid £36 for food for five people. That was cod and chips, cod bites and chips (they're massive, the same size as a large cod but in three chunks), two large chip butties, a large carton of cheesy chips (they took one of the cod bites), and three cartons of curry sauce.

Oooh whats Rag Pudding?

It's mince, gravy and onions in suet pastry but you boil it in a muslin, aka "a rag". My parents like it but I don't like the texture of suet pastry so haven't had it since I was a kid.

Properchips · 29/03/2024 20:19

£5 for fish, chips and peas - a very generous child's portion and more than enough for me with a cuppa plus white bread and butter to make a butty.

gano · 29/03/2024 20:20

£12-15 by me, depending on which chippy.

mysparkleismissing · 29/03/2024 20:20

Now I want fish and chips for my tea!

BugBugTheTornado · 29/03/2024 20:22

We've just eaten one large cod and chips, scampi and chips, a battered sausage and regular chips, mushy peas, can of coke and a bottle of vinegar. We're by the coast in East of England.

Did me, DH, teenager and toddler, with a load of chips left over. That's not a Mumsnet chicken situation, it was all just massive (we're greedy bastards)

£24.90 - I was impressed!

skippy67 · 29/03/2024 20:23

We've just had 2 cod, 1 large chips, portion of calamari, 1 medium chips, 1 curry sauce and 1 mushy peas. Came to £38 and was lovely. We live in SE London
