Botox, frozen faces and big lips

Will this trend ever end, does anyone think?
I don’t judge anyone getting surgery etc, heaven knows I need help with my lines…but the same as everyone else look is pretty weird.
Have just seen some videos from the 80’s & 90’s and just the variation in the way actors etc looked is incredible, so natural and beautiful

Also hoping all this ends by the time my Dd is a teen. I was a teen in the 90’s, yes we wore make up and cared how we looked, but nothing like these days

Such a bitchy thread

I’ve got some filler in my lips and will definitely get Botox in the future. I get O.5ml every 2 or 3 years as I have no top lip and when I smile it vanishes completely. I look 100% better with the filler and feel so much happier and more confident. I have never had anything done to please other people and do it to make me happy.

I think most people on mumsnet think they can “always tell” but really they can tell when someone has got a ridiculous amount. A small bit it very unnoticeable to people you know let alone strangers

I’m not saying no older women look good! They do and can. Just that I’m yet to see an older woman who looks better than when she was young and line free etc.

Women look different as they age - trying to look young isn't the key, embracing yourself, your lines, your different hair colour/texture, different skin tone and so on, that's the way to go.

What's bitchy about expressing dislike for an unnatural look though?

Judging people based on their looks is the definition of bitchy is it not? At least own it

It’s the shiny, sweaty Botox forehead that really freaks me out

Well it’s scary for everyone in my generation - I’m between millennial and gen z. We often discuss how afraid we are and what treatments/serums etc we are using to prevent aging! Maybe it is society now. Studies like the ones showing how men are only attracted to youth certainly aren’t helpful. I feel expired already.

However, both my mum and MIL in their sixties saying they don’t recognise the “ugly old lady” in the mirror and how “horrible” aging is. So it can’t be solely generational.

It’s not generational, it’s as old as time. “Stay young and beautiful if you want to be loved” was a popular song in the 1930s. We’re supposed to be more enlightened now.

I’m older than both your mum and mil and I just feel really sad for them. I see an older version of the person I always was. For me getting old is a privilege, I very nearly died when I was 23 so the subsequent 47 years are a bonus and I still scrub up pretty well when I make the effort.

Not liking a look isn't judging though, it's simply having different tastes.
It would only be judgemental if I was assessing their personality, their ability to do their job, etc. I don't do that.
I don't like fake eyelashes, loads of make up, filler, botox, etc.
Someone else might not like my more naturally ageing look.
We are allowed to have different tastes.

Every 2 to 3 YEARS? Do you not mean months?

This isn’t about judging people on their looks. It’s a discussion about whether cosmetic treatments are effective in what they purport to do - improve appearance, make people look younger.

Mirabai · 29/03/2024 11:34

I don’t think discussion around women and cosmetic treatments should be shut down on the basis that - if you don’t like it or don’t think it generally improves appearance - you’re being unkind.

Women have to be able to discuss these things - pressure on appearance, pressure to alter appearance, the impact of meida and social media etc, affects all of us. Even if we choose against it ourselves, it’s something we have to discuss with our daughters.

Cas112 · 29/03/2024 12:23

@KeinLiebeslied54321 it's not the disliking, if I dislike something that's just how i feel about it and I get on with life. I don't sit and dwell about it and write a whole thread to then sit and discuss with other people in a judgemental bitchy way

Noselikeabluetit · 29/03/2024 12:24

I can’t move my face on one side and a bit on the other because of a genetic disease, people think I’m a lot longer because obviously the side effect is not many wrinkles due to lack of movement but it’s not good because people think I’m rude, aloof because I can’t smile properly and I can’t make small nuanced expressions.

Noselikeabluetit · 29/03/2024 12:25

younger not longer!!! Haha

I am picking YABU because I agree with @EmilyTjP ... I am sick of this same thread coming up every week. Yes I think it's a shame these girls/women are doing this, (having fillers and botox and collagen and the like,) but I CBA to repeat myself over and over.

Edited

Then don't?

We have no idea how long posters have been on MN or what posts they have previously read

And many MANY posts are repeats of former ones (with maybe a small variation)

They do say there's nothing new under the sun

And it's very much a subject for now

It is a very much an issue in regard to society, expectations, mental health and misogyny (because I don't believe for one second they all do it for 'themselves' because what exactly does that mean?)

HairyToity · 29/03/2024 12:47

Yanbu. I can't watch anything with Michelle Keegan in, as I find her so icky looking. Much prefer the natural look.

BobnLen · 29/03/2024 12:48

It looks ridiculous, especially the lips, some upper lips look like Donald Duck

BobnLen · 29/03/2024 12:49

I haven't seen a thread every week, obviously I'm in the wrong quarters of MN

StormingNorman · 29/03/2024 12:49

Each to their own. My only concern is that some people get addicted to tweakments and their look becomes more and more extreme over time.

Again, expressing that something isn't to your taste isn't dwelling on it, nor is it being judgemental or bitchy, it's just having a view and taking the opportunity to share it.

Angrymum22 · 29/03/2024 13:00

As a dentist I am seeing more and more young patients with lip fillers and cheek filler, well fillers wherever you can have them.
Some have had so much filler they are grotesque comic versions of their former ( often very pretty selves). Large lips look very wrong on a small face.
Botox on a young face is pointless. If you have no wrinkles it won’t prevent them since it it’s sun damage not smiling or grimacing that cause them.
Fillers in an old lip that has lost volume is ok as long as you don’t over do it or try to increase the volume to get rind of the vertical wrinkles around the lip. And Botox, when done well can help around the eyes.

I recently treated a patient who has had multiple fillers and “Turkey teeth”. She was unrecognisable from when I last saw her 4 years ago. I’m afraid my unbotoxed , unfilled highly expressive face will definitely given away my horror.

honeylulu · 29/03/2024 13:01

I'm nearly 50 and recently had a set of tweakments as my birthday present to myself (not had anything like this before). I'm really pleased. I don't look fake or frozen or have a different face - I look like a more rested and refreshed version of myself which is what I wanted. I had got fed up with looking in the mirror and seeing such a tired looking face.

I had forehead botox and my frown furrows have gone so I no longer look permanently cross/scowling and the cheek filler has slightly lifted my baggy lower face. My husband admitted he was worried I would come back with a "big round love island face" and is relieved I still look like me but a "perked up version".

I also had some polyneuclitides under the eyes (that area looks a bit dark and hollow these days) but this is a course of treatments and will take about 3 months to show the effect so I can't report back on that yet.

It is expensive though, I was surprised how much seeing how many people on a seemingly low income have it. I'm a senior lawyer and can afford it but I still thought HOW much???
