Will this trend ever end, does anyone think?
I don’t judge anyone getting surgery etc, heaven knows I need help with my lines…but the same as everyone else look is pretty weird.
Have just seen some videos from the 80’s & 90’s and just the variation in the way actors etc looked is incredible, so natural and beautiful

Also hoping all this ends by the time my Dd is a teen. I was a teen in the 90’s, yes we wore make up and cared how we looked, but nothing like these days

Sometimes on my Instagram for you page, people “Yassify” pictures of Liz Taylor, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe and they look TERRIBLE - like Kardashian clones.

What’s more alarming is sometimes I can tell when people have put the filter on say, a picture of Gwyneth Paltrow in the 90s and loads of people DO NOT realise it’s a filter?! What can that be doing to young impressionable minds?

Imagine I wrote a thread about not liking fat women with their lardy arses poured into skintight leggings; I would get slaughtered.
But they have ‘done’ this to themselves just the same by stuffing their faces with crap.
Either we judge people on their appearance or we don’t.
Are you beautiful op? I’m sure as hell not and I would hate anyone to critique my appearance.

Tbf, this happens, a lot here.
Fatphobia is really rife on MN (and everywhere).
You wouldn’t get ’slaughtered’ at all, that’s silly.

FootballFriend · 29/03/2024 10:15

I don’t like fillers as they make faces square and manly.

IntoTheMild · 29/03/2024 10:15

ColBoulter · 29/03/2024 10:05

Completely unnecessary for her to be compared

That's the point though.
Why are you asking me if I look better?
Who has decided this is the standard
I look like me
Better doesn't come into it

You are being deliberately obtuse.

That’s great for you if you don’t compare yourself to your younger self or desire to look more beautiful but many women do and if they want to have treatments to make them feel better about themselves it shouldn’t be judged! You can’t blame society for the way every person feels about themselves, aging is scary for most!

FootballFriend · 29/03/2024 10:19

I think the point is that as a younger person you didn’t look startled and with puffy lips and a square jaw. But each to their own.

Personally I think very overweight/ underweight people and those who are overdoing the procedures are symptomatic of MH issues in the absence of illness etc
I don't feel disgust just empathy that their vulnerability shows in this way.
Saying these things are no ones business is in some way true but when we have women talking about being unable to house or buy food for their children but they have nails, eyebrows, filler, lips and hair extensions we are moving into exploitation.

Testina · 29/03/2024 10:21

“heaven knows I need help with my lines…”

So you know why people do it then?
I can honestly say I have never thought that I need “help” with my natural face.

Challenging someone who has decided its an issue I don't look " better" is not obtuse.
You are pushing an impossible standard.

I don't want to look better

BIossomtoes · 29/03/2024 10:22

aging is scary for most!

I disagree. Most people find it a perfectly normal part of life’s journey. If it scares anyone we need to address that as a society because it’s inherently unhealthy.

This isn’t about individual women’s choices about doing whatever they like to their faces. It’s about a society that makes women feel the need to obliterate every sign of age as if ageing is shameful. A society that’s made youth a deity at whose altar we feel obliged to worship.

It’s about women becoming invisible as they get older, all the derogatory terms applied to women all prefaced by “old”. Old bag, old trout.

Every woman in the public eye is pressurised to fight back the years and that trickles down to the rest of us. How many women would make the choice to have stuff injected into her face if society wasn’t telling her age is ugly?

Bluestarling · 29/03/2024 10:29

Nah...ageing is a bit shit really

biscuitsnow · 29/03/2024 10:34

I agree. Since being in peri menopause I've been finding it a bit shit to age tbh. Flooding periods, moods all over the place, anxiety, sweating more etc Sure it may be normal but there are many aspects to ageing which are not very pleasant and I dont think most people enjoy the physical aspects of ageing at all.

Yep ...Hair texture changing and looking more like Rod Stewart's everyday 🤦

Bluestarling · 29/03/2024 10:39

No offence meant to Rod Stewart

Well it’s scary for everyone in my generation - I’m between millennial and gen z. We often discuss how afraid we are and what treatments/serums etc we are using to prevent aging! Maybe it is society now. Studies like the ones showing how men are only attracted to youth certainly aren’t helpful. I feel expired already.

However, both my mum and MIL in their sixties saying they don’t recognise the “ugly old lady” in the mirror and how “horrible” aging is. So it can’t be solely generational.

Great post Blossomtoes 👏👏👏

It is hard sometimes to age, especially if your body fails you in some way through illness, but my own personal opinion is that, if you haven’t as an older woman, say around the mid-fifties, developed enough backbone, character and confidence in yourself to resist injecting your face with a load of chemicals, then you need to work on those internal things rather than the external face you present to the world.

I know some people will argue that having external procedures done helps with that process and each to their own, but the more individuals succumb, the more it becomes the expected “norm” for everyone.

Those arguments aside, I just don’t think it looks good. The big lips and the emotionless faces I mean. I like quirky characterful faces. And wrinkles!

Yes!!!!! I now have to take thyroid meds too as my hair got really dry and thyroid underactive. Never had that issue in my 20s. Ageing is shit.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 29/03/2024 10:55

There is a woman in a group I go to who has a lot of filler and botox - she looks so strange and actually would probably look better without puffy cheeks and lips. The first time you meet her it is quite jarring, she looks so alien. Trends pass, I hope this one does soon. And the wrinkles people will be left with after filler wears off will be massive.

letitlego · 29/03/2024 10:56

Some people look younger than they did when they really young

Look st Madonna. Yes, an extreme version but her face looks like a baby wearing make up. She's 66

Angelsrose · 29/03/2024 10:57

I think it's a shame that so many young women in their 20s feel pressured to have so much work done when it's so unnecessary. But each to their own.

letitlego · 29/03/2024 10:57

I think it's ok to want to look
Like your younger self but fillers are making people look like someone else entirely

blacksocks33 · 29/03/2024 07:16

I was just about to post this about the lips... I think a more natural look is definitely becoming more common!
I don't have Botox but I do love the smooth Botox forehead look!

An about 30 yo colleague recently told me about her use of Botox over a few glasses of wine.

Never would have guessed it in her case.

I obviously don’t know how it will look in 10-20 (30…) years, but she currently looks absolutely fantastic. Not that this is particularly hard when one is barely 30, but still… I wouldn’t mind getting that kind of Botox 😅

But I’d be too worried about potential side effects / how Botox could potentially affect the brain.

so I’ll stick to sunscreen, retinol and facials 😅

At the age of 50 you can do whatever you want to your face and body. A few tweaks doesn't equate to a lack of backbone/character etc etc....its not mutually exclusive
