Botox, frozen faces and big lips

Will this trend ever end, does anyone think?
I don’t judge anyone getting surgery etc, heaven knows I need help with my lines…but the same as everyone else look is pretty weird.
Have just seen some videos from the 80’s & 90’s and just the variation in the way actors etc looked is incredible, so natural and beautiful

Also hoping all this ends by the time my Dd is a teen. I was a teen in the 90’s, yes we wore make up and cared how we looked, but nothing like these days

@Fairyliz well done for getting some high quality fat bashing into a totally unrelated thread.

You missed my point. I’m trying to say is it okay to comment on people’s appearance for any reason?
Is there a list of things we can comment on and those we can’t?
I have a family member with a facial disfigurement is it okay to comment negatively on that?

LovelyLinseed · 29/03/2024 08:55

I am in my fifties and like my wrinkles! Maybe that’s weird. I see them as signs of a life I have lived.

I can see the unlined beauty of my 19y girl and 21y son and think, now it’s your time to shine and be gorgeous!

I love nice clothes and wear lipstick on a night out and enjoy looking ‘good’. But that doesn’t mean I want to reverse the ageing process and look younger than my years. If I could wave a wand and get rid of my wrinkles, I would say no thanks.

Maybe it helps that I have never been stunning. Average looking all my life and I have never defined myself by my looks. I hope my kids end up the same.

Same. Must be confined to certain parts of the country? I’m not even rural, I live in London, albeit a yummy-mummy pocket of London. I sometimes see this look when I go into central London, but still it’s not as widespread as this thread suggests. I’m also not convinced it’s only a ‘UK thing’.

Yes, I don’t have any friends or family who do this where I live in London. My kids are at university in two different cities and none of their friends are remotely into fillers etc. I see it on trashy TV shows usually (my guilty pleasure with my daughter!).

Botox and filler rarely reverses the ageing process though. People look the same age but weirder.

Treesnbirds · 29/03/2024 08:59

I don't understand it at all. When I see someone with puffed up lips I just assume they spend a large part of their life on social media. - Living in a world where something so extreme seems normal.

I do think it's society's fault for basically criminalising aging and these poor young girls feeling they aren't good enough- maybe?!

I always wonder too what happens to the lip skin if / when you stop having the fillers? 😳😕

Saintmariesleuth · 29/03/2024 09:00

I completely agree with you, OP. It makes me sad that so many people are prepared to undergo these comestic procedures that can have significant consequences if they go wrong.
A friend of mine used to use tanning injections that she bought online- she had no idea what they contained. Downright dangerous

biglipsdontcare · 29/03/2024 09:01

While women's value to society is determined by our appearances this sort of procedure will never end.

gould · 29/03/2024 09:02

It looks very cheap and chavvy

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 29/03/2024 09:06

I blame bratz dolls.

DaisyMcFacey · 29/03/2024 09:08

The younger generation opting for Botox/fillers etc often look like an older person trying to look more youthful! I’m thinking of one person in their mid 30’s who has had lots of procedures, including the very fake looking ‘Turkey teeth’, no movement in their face. I genuinely assumed that this person was at least a decade older!

BIossomtoes · 29/03/2024 09:09

You can’t really win with aging.

You can. It’s as simple as accepting that it’s a natural part of life’s process and refusing to worship at the altar of youth.

BlueEyesBrownHair · 29/03/2024 09:15

The massive fake boobs craze went on a long time, that seems to have died down a bit. Its a shame when people take it too far. The lips, botox, fake teeth. People generally look better natural imo

Bluestarling · 29/03/2024 09:15

It's individual choice and perspective. In my early 40s I said I would never have a toxin injected into my face. Roll forward a few short years to 48 and I had Botox in forehead and 11 lines, and a small amount of lip filler.

I'm glad I waited as I believe at some level there must be a payback from weakening the facial muscles especially if you start doing it regularly from a young age. No Botox around eyes for that reason. I'd rather have a few expression lines than eye bags.

No filler other than lips. And only the least viscous one so it plumps up without the projection.

Last I would only let someone who has been to medical school inject my face. Obvs that means it expensive but it's safer and the result is better.

I've no plans to stop anytime soon but equally so glad I was a 90s kid....no self tan, no lashes, no false nails, no hair extensions....

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 29/03/2024 08:30

Well clearly.
I thought it would cost much more than that to be treated by a qualified practitioner tbh.

@KeinLiebeslied54321 I was talking about face creams and serums not Botox.

I see it a lot and more and more, I just think it’s sad as I want to see real faces, not all the same, some are ruining genuine beauty

So you’re only allowed to get it if you’re ugly?

KimberleyClark · 29/03/2024 09:21

I k ow someone who has Botox and lip fillers but still filters all her Facebook photos. Sad to be so insecure. She is lovely looking.

SkyBloo · 29/03/2024 09:24

I work in central London and both my office and the tube are full of young women with very obvious lip filler.

I find it quite grotesque, it looks distorted and uncomfortable. I appreciate this is only my opinion and in RL i keep that to myself.

I also find it incredibly sad that women are so unhappy with their appearance as to want to do this.

Cadl · 29/03/2024 09:25

I’ve been on a 90s movie nostalgia kick. And it’s struck me how unique the leading women’s face are. Obviously with the absence of Botox and filler but they are also not overly done with drag queen levels of make up nor the same long wavy hair styling.

I can’t remember which actress it was but I watched her thinking she must be one of the most beautiful women of all time….with her thin lips!

AnAwfulPerson · 29/03/2024 09:25

AskingAdviceToday · 29/03/2024 07:14

It actually makes people look older.

It really does. None of them actually look young.

SkyBloo · 29/03/2024 09:28

This. My mother is 70, she has never had:

  • botox
  • fillers
  • any cosmetic procedure of any kind

She eats healthily and exercises, has pretty consistently been a size 12/14 and she looks lovely, lines and all.

My mother in law is very slim and i think it has aged her a bit more around the face but she also looks fabulous.

I'm 38, i don't look the way I did at 25 and that's ok! I'm a mother and it shows in my body and probably my face. I don't look like a model but I'm happy in my own skin.

Meg Ryan? she has had some awful work done

yep! I considered botox a few years ago but soo glad I didnt

Caterguin · 29/03/2024 09:30

I think it's sad that we're still feeling the need to look young in order to feel valued. In mid 40s and am determined to resist botox etc, but there is a part of me that worries about looking older and more unattractive than peers who have gone the full hog. Then that makes me feel a bit pathetic, because why should it matter?

It does tend to be younger people who do eyelashes lips etc. I think the big thick eyelashes, when paired with creosote tan tend to look grubby and make eyes look smaller.
