Will this trend ever end, does anyone think?
I don’t judge anyone getting surgery etc, heaven knows I need help with my lines…but the same as everyone else look is pretty weird.
Have just seen some videos from the 80’s & 90’s and just the variation in the way actors etc looked is incredible, so natural and beautiful

Also hoping all this ends by the time my Dd is a teen. I was a teen in the 90’s, yes we wore make up and cared how we looked, but nothing like these days

Agree OP. Why would anybody want to look like a blow up doll. Doesn't it just reinforce misogyny and that women are only good for one thing. 😐

Yes plus all the you will never look as good as younger fuckable women bullshit
It's the Patriarchy at work
Create doubt/ low self esteem plus the bonus of making money off it,even better you need it regularly so making regular money.
While you are spending this money on injections/ fillers, which by the way will never make you look younger, you aren't spending it on stability such as a home and savings so the risk is you are even more reliant on men.

Fuck that shit!

Not really. My mum was dead against me getting Botox until I pointed out I had already had it done and she hadn't noticed...

If people first have it done when they’re relatively young or they have only a very small amount it can be less noticeable for a while. But as they age the more obvious it is and many opt for more extensive areas as they get older too so it’s a double whammy. Women seem to assume that if people didn’t notice at first they will never notice. I say women - men too - Simon Cowell looks really peculiar.

@MurderousCheekbones I'm not sure I'd tell my daughter I thought she'd had work done. Knowing she'd probably had it done bc she was feeling insecure. No, I'd leave it.

Oh my mum has NO problem telling me what she thinks, don't worry about it!

And I didn't do it out of insecurity. Same as I don't get my hair or nails done because I feel insecure 🤷🏻‍♀️

This isn’t about judging people on their looks. It’s a discussion about whether cosmetic treatments are effective in what they purport to do - improve appearance, make people look younger.

Umm, have you read some of these comments! There are a number of very judgy ones.

MsCactus · 29/03/2024 13:07

Everyone who gets botox/filler seems to say it's subtle and no one notices.

EVERYONE notices. But you're not going to call someone out when they're pretending to "never touch botox" as it's quite rude, particularly if someone's insecure with their looks.

IMO you look at celebs like the Jenners, Kardashian, models like Emily Ratakowski and in photos they look amazing with all that work done - then in videos/unedited they just look bizarre. People are trying to emulate them I think

funnily enough, you are the exact type of person my comment was aimed at…

my sister last month told me she’s been getting 0.5 ml of lip fillers every 4 months since 6 months after she started living with us. Neither me nor my husband noticed.

how on earth would you know if you can ALWAYS tell, when there may well be lots where you can’t actually tell?

becswhite · 29/03/2024 18:38

Strangely, I’ve yet to meet one of the opposite sex who thinks this is in any way attractive, so maybe they’re doing it to repulse rather than attract.

Owl55 · 29/03/2024 18:39

I think it’s sad and unnecessary that young women in their 20/30s even feel they need Botox at that age . I hate the fact my 17 year old Grandaughter feels the need to have plump lips/huge false eyelashes like a love island contestant and I hope as she matures she sees that she is already beautiful as she is 🥲

How old is she? If her own sister doesn’t notice is it really worth forking out for? She can’t look any different?

Or maybe what I do with my face is fuck all to do with men 😁

These threads are always so contradictory.

If you do it so it's noticeable it's too much. If it's not noticeable why bother.

The argument can't be won against people who just aren't into it for their own reasons.

If you can’t tell what is the point of paying all that money? Is it not a bit “Emporers new clothes” ?
I don’t have a problem with people spending money on cosmetic procedures but surely they are only with it if they have some visible improvement/benefit.
I carry out a lot of dental cosmetic dental treatment. I have two rules, firstly it must not cause damage to the existing teeth so do not do crowns or veneers on perfectly sound healthy teeth, and secondly they must improve the appearance.
I will replace existing veneers but nowadays I only use composite to enhance sound teeth. If the patient doesn’t like them they can be removed without any damage to the original tooth.
Unfortunately lip fillers tend to spread and cannot be removed completely. They strip the natural colour from the lip and tend to leave them very lumpy.
I’ve actually started to get the “ick” when treating patients with lip fillers, up close and without lipstick or gloss they really aren’t very attractive.

TheIceQween · 29/03/2024 18:52

Google Katie Price “then” and “now”……

Pickingmyselfup · 29/03/2024 18:58

I think there is a more noticeable increase on stuff like botox, fillers etc and some of them have taken it too far.

I've dabbled with fake eyelashes and deemed them too fiddly and too fake looking for my liking, can't afford to get them done properly. I think they look nice if they aren't OTT.

Fake nails will mostly always look fake, I had them a lot because I bite my own nails and they look awful but the upkeep and expense was a PITA and because I have stupidly shaped nails they always looked fake.

I do have lip fillers but they aren't obvious, my own lips are really thin and I've hated them forever. I'm about to get a top up after a year so I took a photo of before and one today and there is a subtle difference but you would struggle to tell unless you knew me very well. I can tell the difference and I know that I look a bit different but I don't look fake and I hope the small top up will just give me a bit of plumpness.

I would have botox too but just to tone down any wrinkles, not to look like a teenager in my 30s.

However I think it is a slippery slope, you get used to how you look so you think you need more. Everyone around you looks "unnatural" so it doesn't occur to you that you don't.

I have some trusted friends that I have told to instruct me if they think I am going too far with the fillers and I know they will, if they won't my mum will. I do not want to look fake, I just want some lips!

Mirabai · 29/03/2024 19:10

It’s so sad that you learned to hate part of your own body and have to spend money changing it. You don’t see many men with thin lips having regular filler.

As someone who has Botox and fillers I can assure you it’s not painful whatsoever.

We don’t need or care for your unsolicited comments.

Lucky you. My friend has Botox and says the nice doctor gives her anaesthetic cream first to dull the pain!

It's not always noticeable in photos. It's how the lips and mouth move now. It looks unnatural because it's unnatural. That's what people notice.

bojee · 29/03/2024 19:22

I agree its not a good look, I think it probably works best on people who are older and have lost volume and want to restore some of what they used to have but in younger women it does typically look unnatural and its not an improvement. Its like from a certain angle and a certain light they look more like the girls they see on instagram and so they like it but in real life when they are talking and their faces are moving it just looks odd.

I think though that currently people just like that look even though it isn't natural or beautiful, its trendy and so people just want to do what everyone else is doing.

Catsbreakfast · 29/03/2024 19:25

EarringsandLipstick · 28/03/2024 22:49

I don't know about 'young'. It's any age, as far as I can see.

I worked at a place with women in their early twenties who felt they had to do this to appeal. It is sad and the pressure on women to look an unattractive standard is just not healthy in any way. I don’t have an issue with surgery and treatments in general, but I do find it concerning how much pressure there is now to get it done.

Early 40’s, enough to make her feel good I guess but not so much to everyone else

MurderousCheekbones · 29/03/2024 19:29

@LovelyLinseed that is overkill, it's so not painful! The needle is absolutely tiny.

There’s different kinds of work. Some is supposed to be preservative or preventative - to stop changes that ageing produces (and in doing so can distort the face in other ways) ; and some is intended to change an existing feature.

So there’s different kinds of not noticeable - there’s the looking noticeably great but the work isn’t obvious which is the holy grail that everyone’s chasing but few achieve; there’s having a nose job or lip fillers that didn’t actually change the feature at all so not really worth doing.

I agree. Whatever you do people will judge so no point worrying about it. I couldn't give a rats ass if people dont like it, I do it for me and will continue to do so. I love botox.

I don’t know, I probably wouldn’t notice if another woman wore eyeliner but I do sometimes because it makes me feel like my eyes look nice. Same reason I’d get a nice fringe cut or some highlights in my hair. It makes me feel good.

That's true but for me it's a payoff, it might not look totally natural in the same way a boob job might but I prefer it so I put up with it.

I'm not ashamed to admit to people I've had them, we got talking at work and someone was like you've not had them have you to me despite me having them and so I said yes I have.
