I saw my neighbours bringing food shopping in today

The big shop

A post on another thread here reminded me. I often think about when on earth do my neighbours do food shopping as I never see them bringing food shopping in…ev😂
Whereas I’m always laden with bags
I wfh so notice lots, no delivery vans and never see (aside from this time) neighbours bringing food bags in.

Is this just me and my street

I wonder about the layout in people's homes whereby they can see all this out of the windows.

From where Im sitting I cant see the street

graceinspace999 · 26/03/2024 07:23

They have a secret tunnel in preparation for TEOTWAWKI obvs…. 🙄

Facelikearedrooster · 26/03/2024 07:25

I sneak my food in a potato at a time

swayingpalmtree · 26/03/2024 07:31

Yessssss! It's so bloody weird. I feel like I'm always lugging shopping in twice a week but my neighbours just seem to survive without it. Are they vampires?!

I can see three houses from my WFH table. I know one house has regular Waitrose deliveries, another seems to have takeaways delivered twice a day, the third house has a Riverford food box every week.

I hadn't even realised I had observed this until I read this thread!

Not clocked food shop but the reason I know that neighbours over the road and up a bit never cook is that their evening food delivery happens just as I am leaving for work. Driver invariably double parks and no one can get past. As a result I know that they have Maccies most days and the occasional KFC.

Never seen them though!

Oooh are you living on our estate? Our neighbors opposite have deliveroo every single night! I have lived here 7 years and they’ve been doing that all the time I’ve been here!

I've never seen my neighbours bring in any large boxes marked IKEA Pax, yet I noticed the other day when the light was on in their bedroom that they now have a triple with the mirrored doors. Looks a bit too big for the room if I'm honest.

😁 this is EXACTLY the kind of thing I notice!

Waitingfordoggo · 26/03/2024 07:37

I find it weird that people think it’s weird that they haven’t seen their neighbours bringing shopping in. Is it not perhaps the case that they do/have done their shopping while you’re out? (Unless perhaps you never leave your house).

Even if you’re at home 24/7, you’re presumably not standing looking out of the window permanently?

FB Marketplace? Hence the need to make it fit at all cost!

I have never seen my neighbour leave her house, any further than the driveway, by foot.

She can walk and even has a PT visit at home
We have local shops and she has friends locally.
She drives everywhere. The car exits the drive and is sometimes back within 2 minutes.

🤷‍♀️

I have lived in my house for 16 years and I've never seen my next door neighbour (who works as a nurse) leave her drive, alone. She never walks anywhere (they have a dog) or drives anywhere herself. In fact I've never seen her go to work, or return, even getting a lift. I've never had the opportunity to say hello to her. I did see her in town once, but she blanked me (she probably didn't know who I am!) DH says this is weird and he's spoken to her. Her DH is very friendly and chatty though.

Bumblebeeinatree · 26/03/2024 07:54

Maybe they late night shop usually. I've never seen my neighbours bring in shopping, but we have driveways and hedges!

Katemax82 · 26/03/2024 07:55

I never saw my neighbours do this, although there was often ocado vans on the road

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 26/03/2024 07:58

This got me thinking. When I lived in my first house I had an integral garage. I would drive into the garage, close the door and take all my shopping into the house through the connecting door. Absolutely nobody could see me.
There’s a thought.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 26/03/2024 07:59

During one of the lockdowns, our neighbours got a hot tub. It was just suddenly there and all set up and ready to go. Their garden is clearly visible from all windows at the back of our house, and we were all stuck at home but didn't notice it arriving or any of the associated faffing involved in setting it up.

After a fashion it disappeared. Again, unnoticed.

Then it came back. Like magic.

Went again. Pooft.

Came back.

These days I check daily, just to make sure it's still there.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/03/2024 08:01

I haven't either but I see the occasional Tesco or Ocado van. I hardly see my neighbours but I know who they all are and that they are very nice and neighbourly. There are only 8 houses and all our dc are grown-up except in one house where the people are a bit younger.

Sometimes I feel a bit lonely living here as the only thing in walking distance is the station.

ZetuianRose · 26/03/2024 08:02

Wow, I’ve never noticed this either! Maybe once I saw one neighbour with shopping but I don’t think it was food!

I’m the opposite for takeaway though, they drive me MAD! The amount of delivery guys I have wandering up my drive and round my garden coming to the wrong house and setting my cameras off. And then there was the one on Xmas day night a few years back, gone 11pm, that rang the doorbell asking if I’d ordered food. “No?…” and he went away. Went to bed. Next thing, there’s stones hitting my window 🤔 looked out and there’s some hoodies in the street. Back to bed. More stones! 🤬

Leaned out of window and yelled at the dickheads. They then started yelling back that I’d “stolen their food”. What?? No, I have not stolen anything, and do NOT throw shit at my windows ffs! I have a door if you’re that bothered??

Turns out they were moronic friends of next door (who are actually usually both very nice people with a young daughter). The bloke came out and was apologising to me about his mates and asking about the food - I told him I’d sent the driver away, I was livid. He then rang my ex who I was with at the time the next day to say sorry, I was still livid. Why not just ring us and ask in the first place if he had our number?? Don’t let your stupid mates out to harass us! He put £20 through the door to apologise 🙄

Cheeseandquackers21 · 26/03/2024 08:13

My parents rarely do a big shop, and if they do from aldi its about 8/9pm at night so its quieter
L. Otherwise throughout the week my mum will go to rhe shops a few times

Fran2023 · 26/03/2024 08:15

We do our food shopping at 6am. Our neighbours would probably say the same thing about us.

nononononononononon · 26/03/2024 08:20

Not everyone does a "big shop" - I don't. I go everywhere with my backpack - sometimes it's got food shopping in, sometimes it hasn't, but no one would know. 🤷

PeaceandCakes · 26/03/2024 08:20

🤔

HowDoWeDoThisPlease · 26/03/2024 08:22

My next door neighbours shopping habits are bizarre. She gets two different store deliveries a week, but has them both in the same day. Shes retired, so it’s not like there’s only one day she’s home for it to happen. Surely it would be better to have different days, so that you are getting fresh produced topped up later in the week🤷‍♀️ This bothers me for more than it should. I’ve never seen the neighbour on the other side bring in any groceries. I assume she gets some at some time, as she hasn’t wasted away yet….

I've been known to have deliveries from different shops turn up together. It certainly confused the drivers.

Fizbosshoes · 26/03/2024 08:24

I've never thought about it. I'm out during the day, and close the blinds in the evening so no idea what neighbours do about shopping. (Both sets of neighbours are retired if that makes any difference - I assume they still need to shop!)

Now paranoid who is by their window taking notes on Sunday afternoon when I bring my shopping in!! 😵‍💫🤣

IhateSPSS · 26/03/2024 08:24

You can tell some of you have never had your life threatened or been in danger Grin

I know most of my neighbours habits (I even have nicknames for my neighbours based on these habits). It's not because I am nosey, it's because I am hyper vigilant. I have complex PTSD and I need to know about the people that surround me, as predicting and understanding their behaviour is important to me, so I can make a constant assessment regarding mine and my families safety.

All neighbours get food (obvs) but the human brain is brilliant at filtering out what it doesn't need to know, it's a well studied part of psychology called the selective attention test. The monkey business illusion is used to demonstrate it. If you are focussed on getting into your nice, cosy home after the stress of being out in every day life, you are attending to yourself and are focussed on yourself and your behaviours (probably thinking about your laundry, washing up, getting DC to bed, feeding your pet etc). It's exhausting being on high alert and observing your surroundings and assessing for risk all the time, so the brain doesn't do this if it doesn't need to.

Plus, it's just a numbers game isn't it - think about all the minutes of the day, in ratio to how many you spend looking out of the window/getting out of your car/observing other people.
