To longboard to work?

DW worries a lot about what other people will think.

I turned 33 and was appalled at the state of my fitness. Ditched the car, ditched the heels for nice trainers, and started walking to work and everywhere else. A month and a half ago I bought a longboard. I used to be an avid snowboarder in my teens and this longboard has honestly been such a good purchase as I not only feel fitter but also actually find myself looking forward to the morning commute!

DW hates it. She thinks it's childish and that I should get a bicycle like "a normal adult". AIBU to longboard to work? I have no interest in bicycles and I don't see how long boarding to work is "too try hard". Confused

Not on the footpath, please.

OP will you be using the road or a designated cycle lane? Or are you intending to use the pavement?

I think it’s what millennials call a skateboard 😂

Edited

Nooooooo, it’s a different type of skateboard. Different shapes, longer, more flex, generally larger deck. More for travel than tricks.

I’m great fun at parties🎉 😀

But at 70 years old I think it wouldn’t end well if a long board rider accidentally collided with me on my way to the party. My friend, 10 years younger than me, is currently on crutches and recovering from a broken femur. A selfish dick riding a scooter on the pavement ran into her.

‘Tell me you’re kind who rides their bike on the pavement without telling me you ride your bike on the pavement’

I don’t think you are being unreasonable but I am completely intrigued as to how you long board to work, I assume you can’t do it in the road but they also look too big for the pavement and like you’d have to constantly stop for pedestrians etc? Or maybe you go in the cycle lane but I imagine that would wind up cyclists. Maybe you have very wide pavements or clear roads where you live?

I thought it was something that went on the river! Was going to say it's fine, but you might need a shower when you get to work, and make sure you have somewhere safe to store it!

abracadabra1980 · 25/03/2024 22:32

We live near the coast and often see older men out and about on their boards. Must admit the only longboard I'd heard of is related to surfing though! It's cool 😎

Same. I imagined you in a wetsuit over your work clothes on your belly paddling down the Thames, and thought... hmm, that seems a bit complicated and wet.

You are only 33 and even if you were 53 once you are capable of doing it then why not and it is great fitness and will also lift the mood. Go for it and tell your husband he sounds like an old man putting you down. I think it is great for you and why should we have to give up on things we enjoy.
