To longboard to work?

DW worries a lot about what other people will think.

I turned 33 and was appalled at the state of my fitness. Ditched the car, ditched the heels for nice trainers, and started walking to work and everywhere else. A month and a half ago I bought a longboard. I used to be an avid snowboarder in my teens and this longboard has honestly been such a good purchase as I not only feel fitter but also actually find myself looking forward to the morning commute!

DW hates it. She thinks it's childish and that I should get a bicycle like "a normal adult". AIBU to longboard to work? I have no interest in bicycles and I don't see how long boarding to work is "too try hard". Confused

Go for it! I would like to get a Swyfty scooter. Not for commuting to work, just for getting around town and for going to the park with my toddler and his scooter.

That's what I thought, too. I assumed OP must live near a body of water that would take him close enough to work to where "longboarding" would be practical. Kind of disappointed now! (:

Her, I think, given the reference to giving up high heels.

Do you live in London? If so, crack on.

You'd probably be judged if you live out in the sticks and probably get run over if you live around here, as the narrow roads are very windy with no pavements for miles. Drivers wouldn't expect to see a cyclist let alone a skateboard in these parts.

No don't crack on.

I think most Londoners are thoroughly pissed off with this and the worst thing is they expect pedestrians to get out of the way.

It is mostly far too crowded for that.

fungipie · 25/03/2024 18:24

Amazing sport- if only I was younger. Many of my younger friends do it as a hobby, in the mountains near me. The drive up- stop a car going down with a passenger and ask them to drive the car down, and leave it in the car-park- then longboard down. And again, and again. Fabulous.

But where do you live to commute by longboard??? Downhill? and then carry board up on return. On road? On bike lane? Please explain.

Joone · 25/03/2024 18:28

go for it, I don’t anymore as I wfh but I used to skateboard commute, as long as it’s not too crowded (and if it is you can just pick it up and walk)
skateboarding (or long or penny boarding) isn’t anymore childish then biking.

PotatoPudding · 25/03/2024 18:29

When I was your age, I used to rollerblade to work.

Shiveringinthecountry · 25/03/2024 19:09

Definitely do it! Harmless fun isn't easy to come by, and this will actually good for you 👍

Cities are the ideal places for alternative modes of transport that don't require an engine, more long boards, fewer cars

@GreyCritic

There are far worse things you could do OP. if you are getting fitter as well as enjoying your commute, and not a hazard to anyone go for it! What a lovely positive way to start your day. 🌹

LifeIsAboutToChange · 25/03/2024 19:18

OP probably calls it long boarding as skateboarding sounds childish doesnt it

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2024 19:21

To be honest, a longboard to me is a longboard surfboard. And it would be pretty cool to surf to work.

Can you surf in a manner that actually gets you from A to B along the shore (and back again) rather than just paddle out and surf back in?
It'd have to be windsurfing... that would be a bit unreliable.

Some sort of kayak or canoe though...Grin

tracktrail · 25/03/2024 19:29

I'd have a go of I wasn't worried about falling off and breaking a hip! 60s baby here! 😂 I loved skateboarding as a kid in the 70s when they became popular.

GoonieGang · 25/03/2024 19:33

Do it, bollocks to what others think.
Be safe, be considerate and enjoy your daily commute.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/03/2024 19:34

You’ll be as annoying as the adults using the scooters.

DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira · 25/03/2024 19:35

Well I thought longboarding was surfing so I was VERY intrigued at your question!

Life is short, do want you want.

GardenRoom · 25/03/2024 19:35

FourLeggedBuckers · 25/03/2024 18:11

Are you suggesting that there’s a causative link between non-bike wheel-based personal transport and being a dick?

Like the OP is a perfectly lovely human, then buys a longboard and instantly becomes a massive arsehole? 😂

It’s a crazy world we’re living in, so who can say? I wouldn’t want to chance it without cast-iron proof that there’s no link

ManchesterGirl2 · 25/03/2024 19:37

Go for it! Life's too short to be a "normal adult".

betterangels · 25/03/2024 19:39

Keeprejoining · 25/03/2024 18:13

As a pedestrian that would piss me off. I'm sick of dodging this sort of thing going faster than average walking pace. May not be dangerous for the skateboarder but painful for an injured pedestrian

As someone in a wheelchair, same.

Or they call it longboarding because they use a longboard.

Crazy, I know.

Wellhellooooodear · 25/03/2024 19:44

Personally if I saw an adult doing this I'd think they were a tit but if you don't care what people think then why not. I'm a stranger and my opinion doesn't matter

BloodandGlitter · 25/03/2024 19:46

I think the most pathetic thing to hear is honestly that something is just for kids not adults. We don't have to stop doing anything fun just because we turned 18. You can still have fun and enjoy fun things when you're 80 and I really hope people do because there's so much more to life than working and pretending to be a miserable adult.

It’s a brilliant theory, and one I’d love to experiment with.

Is it a one-touch and you’re over to the dark side experience, or is it cumulative, and you get just a little bit more shit each time you pick up your longboard?

If you stop using it, does it wear off? Or are you only a dick whilst using the board?

Can I get funding to study this, for the future of humanity?!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/03/2024 19:51

I presumed OP is a woman.

And she ain’t come back yet.

Absolutely, there are some very mean-spirited, narrow-minded people on this thread. 'Your [sic] an adult' Hmm.
