To longboard to work?

GreyCritic · 25/03/2024 17:27

DW worries a lot about what other people will think.

I turned 33 and was appalled at the state of my fitness. Ditched the car, ditched the heels for nice trainers, and started walking to work and everywhere else. A month and a half ago I bought a longboard. I used to be an avid snowboarder in my teens and this longboard has honestly been such a good purchase as I not only feel fitter but also actually find myself looking forward to the morning commute!

DW hates it. She thinks it's childish and that I should get a bicycle like "a normal adult". AIBU to longboard to work? I have no interest in bicycles and I don't see how long boarding to work is "too try hard". Confused

I was being lighthearted.

Sorry that it seemed to go over your heads.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/03/2024 21:01

Well it's very cool, go for it

But I'm also taking issue with 'longboard' - my kids have skateboarded for 20
Plus years and never heard the word longboard 🤷‍♀️

Ones 32 and he still does to work - why the fuck shouldn't he

Yeah, that didn’t translate. Your failed attempt at being condescending did though.

Carenz · 25/03/2024 21:14

Go for it! My DH can’t skateboard any more due to old age pains but he misses it loads. If you enjoy it and it’s making you healthier, go for it! It’s not more “annoying” than a bike or a horse. So daft that people are saying it’s only for youngsters, of course it isn’t. Enjoy your life! You’ve only got the one so keep skating to work and have fun.

When I hear longboard I think of surfing. Couldn't figure out how on earth that would work on the commute.

Me too - I imagined OP turning up at work and pulling off a wetsuit James Bond style...

Ilovetea33 · 25/03/2024 21:23

Scooters on the pavement do piss me off, so I'm sure your longboard would as well.

MumblesParty · 25/03/2024 21:23

Dewdilly · 25/03/2024 17:28

What on earth is a longboard?

I think it’s what millennials call a skateboard 😂

theduchessofspork · 25/03/2024 21:25

Of course, as long as you aren’t ploughing down pedestrians

I chipped my front teeth falling off a state board as a kid, which has proved v expensive as an adult, so I probably wouldn’t..

Edited

No it’s a certain type of skateboard. There are different styles.

Big skateboard ?

Cherrysoup · 25/03/2024 21:31

If you’re enjoying it and you’re getting exercise, what’s not to love? There’s a sixth former who rollerblades into school, I’m so jealous! I’d do it but either I’m dyspraxic or just used to overbalance due to my weight so I’d be a right bloody hazard!

Big skateboard ?

….yes 😂

My DH was a skater and so I’ve had it drummed into me about different types of boards, but essentially it’s that basic!

Do you live in London? If so, crack on.

You'd probably be judged if you live out in the sticks and probably get run over if you live around here, as the narrow roads are very windy with no pavements for miles. Drivers wouldn't expect to see a cyclist let alone a skateboard in these parts.

I’m not agains’t it generally but London with it’s very crowded pavements is not the place for it, scooters are a menace as it is

Allfur · 25/03/2024 21:40

Surely there's room for both pedestrians and longboarders on a pavement, it's great to see other modes of green transport

Allfur · 25/03/2024 21:41

Scooters don't take up much space either

SirenSays · 25/03/2024 21:46

Oh ffs OP, how immature. Don't you know that once you reach 18 years of age you must choose the boring option, Always. Don't you dare try to be different or fun.

Ilovetea33 · 25/03/2024 21:46

It's not about the space, it's about the speed and the unpredictability.

RaininSummer · 25/03/2024 21:51

When I walk to work, people zooming around me on wheels is rather terrifying. I love the idea otherwise but really don't think it's safe or should be allowed on pavements.

Icehockeyflowers · 25/03/2024 21:53

Two parents at my kid’s school skateboard to the school. I think it’s pretty cool.
But I had a colleague who was a bit of a twat who often rollerbladed to work and it reinforced my opinion that he was indeed a twat but that was because a) I didn’t particularly like him b) he’d rollerblade in office wear including a tie and it looked silly c) he made sure everyone saw him by practically skating to his desk (4th floor office!).

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 25/03/2024 21:54

It's very Simon Pegg, isn't it?

Skateboards/scooters/etc as a mode of transport post driving age seems a bit strange to me. But I live in a small town - would probably be handier in a city

Where has she said she skates on the pavement? I have looked but can’t seem to see it. Most skaters would do it on the road to avoid having to weave people!

@TheSmallAssassin 🤣🤣

CroccyWoccy · 25/03/2024 21:58

Go for it (full disclosure I commute on an adult microscooter). Life is too short to care what other people think.

KidneyWarrior · 25/03/2024 17:49

I thought you were commuting on a surfboard 🏄‍♀️

Me too. Wd love that. I think go for it re longboard. Remember, for fitness you are better off walking than cycling the same distance. Cycling is very efficient.

Allfur · 25/03/2024 21:58

Are there many cases of skate board/pedestrian clashes?
