Is it seen to BU to go to the toilet at work?

Posting here for traffic. In the office this morning, there were 2 members of my team having a moan. Essentially, someone had gone to the toilet and had sprayed some of the provided air freshener. Staff member moans that the staff member in question should have waited until they got home before they "stink out the work toilets".

Staff members in question are mid 20s. It started a stupid debate in the office and basically, the older generation see no issue with going to the toilets at work. Younger generation claim they would be mortified and state they would not poop at work!

Is it a generational thing then? I'm of the mindset, if you have to go, you have to go!

YABU - Get a grip - poop away
YANBU - Gross! Hold it in until you get home!

Pretty sure it's a female thing.
I used to work on a trading floor in a huge investment bank. The women would complain constantly if the toilets smelled of poo, and try to use other floors if they had to go, whereas the men would proudly stride into the loos by my desk all morning with newspapers under their arms and stay in there for half an hour!
I have very unpredictable bowels so will join the campaign to normalise women pooing!

I always try to find a toilet not near my office preferably on a different floor or building.

Me too. I really don't like going at work but it's often physically impossible to hold it in! I've found a toilet at the other side of the building that no one uses.

We have one men's, one women's, one unisex. Literally one cubicle for each. I don't like going at work but I do understand that's my own issue, and if you have to go, you have to go.
However. One of my (female) colleagues arrives half an hour before everyone else. By the time I arrive, she's had a poo in the only ladies. Every morning. And it stinks. It stinks the toilet cubicle out, it smells in the corridor. It's awful.
I completely understand that some people need to go when the urge takes them. But EVERY DAY as soon as she arrives? It's like she's now in the habit and has almost trained herself to go at 8.31am. Rather than 8.05 before leaving home.
It's not a nice experience for everyone else for the rest of the morning until it disperses.
She also turns the light off, which then cuts the extractor fan off, so it takes even longer to disperse.
Your colleagues sound childish, but it IS an issue if someone is making a communal space an unpleasant experience for others to use.

A poo should not stink for any length of time if flushed properly, and if the person has no medical problems. I suspect that she does have medical problems, leading both to the urgency and the stink. So don't be too harsh with her.

However, she should not make things worse by turning off the light and the extractor. Perhaps a note could be put up in the loo reminding people to keep the light on.

It’s an age thing. Teens and young people don’t like other people knowing they poop so to them, going at school/work is mortifying.

As they get older, they come to realise everyone shits and does not give a fuck.

forgivingfiggy · 25/03/2024 15:03

When I was young I would have been able and willing to hold it in until I go home, now I struggle with both!

Kath85 · 25/03/2024 15:05

I’d rather not but I have IBS so don’t get much choice!

PurplePanda1 · 25/03/2024 15:05

When I worked in an office I would try and avoid pooing at work as much as possible unless I just couldn’t hold it in any longer. Then like others I would go to a different floor to the less used loo’s.
I hate people who make a huge fuss about it though and try to embarrass the person who has just 💩. It’s a form of bullying in my opinion.

CagneyAndLazy · 25/03/2024 15:06

YABU to use "poop" to describe it!

Blobfishy · 25/03/2024 15:07

Not sure whether I'm viewed as part of the old or young generation at 33 (younger probably), but I certainly am part of the pooping at work group. It isn't always possible to hold it in, or it's incredibly uncomfortable!

sparkles7846 · 25/03/2024 15:07

@HussellRobbs I meant work. Still not been the toilet, emergency after work 🤣🤣🤣

NC03 · 25/03/2024 15:08

I avoid it if possible because someone commenting on smell when I was a teenager and used a public toilet (she said that's disgusting and pulled a face at me) has given me a lifelong issue with it
We have poo pourri sprays at work in all the toilets which work really well without being as "gas you out" as air freshener

Malarandras · 25/03/2024 15:10

So if someone has IBS then this is not a consideration. Same for any other bowel conditions I would imagine!

Spacecowboys · 25/03/2024 15:10

No one at my workplace uses the staff toilets in the dept for number 2’s. There are public toilets on a different floor that staff go to for this purpose. There is a generational aspect as well I think. My DCs will only have number 2 s at home, no where else, which does involve them holding it in sometimes. They are good at opening windows and using spray🤣.

ginasevern · 25/03/2024 15:17

I've worked in offices for nearly 50 years and the comments about stinky poo have always been the same old, same old. Younger people have always been more precious or giggly about it (including me when I first started work).

I wouldn't poo at work if I could possibly help it but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Ponderingwindow · 25/03/2024 15:22

The only problem is that someone sprayed air freshener as it is problematic for asthma and allergies. Vile stuff that has no place in communal spaces.

I like go at work because it means I get paid for it but then afterward I give all my colleagues a little goody bag like those terrible ones given out by parents travelling on a plane with a baby.

Inside mine is some lavender oil, a nose plug and a poem that says "Very sorry, thought I'd let you know. To the toilet I had to go. You may want to leave it a little bit, cos I've just done a massive..." I'll let people guess the rest.

Needless to say this hasn't worked and HR have asked me to stop.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 thank you for making me smile today

Caluse · 25/03/2024 15:26

I just go when I need to, it's unhealthy not to. But recently at a work event I had to poo and another woman in the toilets gave me a filthy look when I came out of my cubicle. I think it's ridiculous, that's what toilets are for! Though I do wish more places would supply air freshener as I like to leave the loo nice for the next person.

I once knew a woman who cancelled a holiday with her new beau, as she couldn’t face sharing a hotel bathroom incase he smelled / heard anything… I wonder if she ever got married or had kids!

I'm fine with my partner about toileting habits but I once shared a caravan with his family as well (MIL and brother) and I found it really awkward and uncomfortable needing to poop with them in the caravan.
It was so anxiety inducing I actually either found a toilet elsewhere or asked my partner if he'd go on a walk with them or go see the rest of his family so I'd be alone for a few minutes.
I know not a healthy mindset but I couldn't help it.. I just couldn't be comfortable.

Willmafrockfit · 25/03/2024 15:30

i went in the shopping centre and a woman wrinkled her nose at me!

ha ha
it wasnt my intention but it did occur in the right place!

cuckyplunt · 25/03/2024 15:31

Most twenty somethings live on fast food so they’re probably all constipated anyway.

cuckyplunt · 25/03/2024 15:32

Also… healthy pop doesn’t really smell..

EmpressSoleil · 25/03/2024 15:34

FGS, people aren't shitting on their office chairs, I hope!

It's a bloody toilet, that's what its for. Like some pp's, I have bowel issues and sometimes it's so bad I worry about not making it to the loo! So I certainly give no thought to where that loo is.

When I worked in an office I commuted by tube (so no loo's). I'd have had to hold it in for approx 12 hours. That's not happening. It makes me sad to think that people would judge me disgusting, for using a toilet for its intended purpose. So glad I wfh now!

Maddy70 · 25/03/2024 15:36

I would never poo in work....its gross wait until you go home

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 25/03/2024 15:37

Am I the only person who's bowels just shut down for the day while I'm at work? I never, ever need to release a no2 unless I'm safely at home. Which sounds great, but in reality it makes for miserable holidays.....

GalileoHumpkins · 25/03/2024 14:18

I do think spraying air freshener is more antisocial than pooping though, that stuff is awful to breathe in and the air just smells likes poo scented flowers.

POO SCENTED FLOWERS!!!!!!!!!! 😂😂😂
