Is it seen to BU to go to the toilet at work?

Posting here for traffic. In the office this morning, there were 2 members of my team having a moan. Essentially, someone had gone to the toilet and had sprayed some of the provided air freshener. Staff member moans that the staff member in question should have waited until they got home before they "stink out the work toilets".

Staff members in question are mid 20s. It started a stupid debate in the office and basically, the older generation see no issue with going to the toilets at work. Younger generation claim they would be mortified and state they would not poop at work!

Is it a generational thing then? I'm of the mindset, if you have to go, you have to go!

YABU - Get a grip - poop away
YANBU - Gross! Hold it in until you get home!

They have a toilet off the breakroom at my school but its well designed, there's a heavy solid door leading to the sink, then the toilet itself is behind another heavy solid floor to ceiling door (even though its just a single toilet rather than a set of cubicles) so noise and smells are well contained. Don't know someone's done a poo until you go in there!

Notinthemood12 · 27/03/2024 17:31

If work toilets had windows it would be more comfortable for all but nope, because that would be common sense.

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 12:53

I'm fairness that's a workplace issue, where they have positioned the restroom incorrectly!

You can't blame people for carrying out an equally normal bodily donation of a poo, just as important as eating.

Yes it’s very silly to have a toilet in the office itself. I used to visit a project where they had something like this and tbf it did horrify me a bit. It was the only toilet they had as well 😱

Auburngal · 27/03/2024 23:00

I reckon that these two colleagues are the type who can’t go to the toilets on their own if they are in a restaurant, leisure place (bowling alley, cinema) etc - they need their friend with them.

RH1234 · 28/03/2024 12:05

I found this thread more interesting that I probably should haha.

My body is like clockwork, by the time I get to work from commute I need the toilet. I don’t care what people think, it’s not like unicorns and fairy dust comes out of some people… The colleagues need to get over themselves and realise that’s what a toilet is for.

Iwasafool · 28/03/2024 12:25

My point of view is why would they have toilets at work if you aren't supposed to use them.

It’s a legal requirement. I could not do a shift without using the loo

MaryFuckingFerguson · 28/03/2024 13:20

I just thought of this thread as I popped to the loo at work.

A sheepish looking women exited the stall. It was very stinky and she’d left skids 🤨

Yes but is it a legal requirement to have a toilet as a decorative feature or as something people can use? If it is there to be used there can't be anything wrong with using it.

People who can’t use work or any other toilets outside the home are weird.

Give them a bowel or bladder issue and that will change them

CreateYourOwnUsername · 28/03/2024 22:04

It depends on the toilets for me. Some are more private than others! In my previous two schools, the staff toilets were right in the corridor with just the door between the toilet and all the kids and other staff walking past and no windows. I very much held it there. Now I have a more normal toilet (cubicles inside a room with sinks and windows which open), I'll go but still wait for it to be quiet.

Toilet etiquette is important though. You have to leave it clean and open the window. There are toilet brushes in ours so there's no excuse for leaving big skid marks (and yet people still do)!

As a child I rarely used toilets out of the home. I just didn't like it, and I didn't need to as I had a bladder of steel. As an adult I'll use any toilet and it doesn't bother me, but there are times it would be very useful to have that bladder back!

OnePlumFatball · 29/03/2024 10:36

I would say it's a basic human right to be able to use the toilet. Smelly as it is... IT happens get over it people! 😂 I believe holding it in for an extended period is actually really bad for you too

Gemz1010 · 29/03/2024 15:57

I personally can't do it at work, no matter how badly I get stomach pains it won't come out unless I'm at home but I understand if ladies need to go then they should and no one should remark about it, it's embarrassing enough as it is.

I like go at work because it means I get paid for it but then afterward I give all my colleagues a little goody bag like those terrible ones given out by parents travelling on a plane with a baby.

Inside mine is some lavender oil, a nose plug and a poem that says "Very sorry, thought I'd let you know. To the toilet I had to go. You may want to leave it a little bit, cos I've just done a massive..." I'll let people guess the rest.

Needless to say this hasn't worked and HR have asked me to stop.

I cannot stop laughing at your response. I work with a bunch of arseholes who constantly complain about people using the bathroom for what is supposed to happen in the bathroom. I find the complaining to be far more bothersome than the using of the bathroom and constantly wonder if they all have intestinal damage from holding in their poo. I Sometimes I just cannot tolerate other adults acting infantile. Well, tbh most of the time at work. Your response cheered me up immensely today. Thank you.

How do you deal with going away?

Honestly I don't poo that often anyway but by the end of the week I'm pretty bloated and getting cramps.. as soon as I get home I have to ensure I have the day alone to go and sit on the toilet

Noyesnoyes · 30/03/2024 08:34

@Gemz1010 that actually sounds wrong! Can you never have a two week holiday.

I mean this in the nicest possible way but you really need to get over yourself. That's not healthy behaviour and is doing your body no good.

ThinWomansBrain · 30/03/2024 09:46

wouldn't think twice about it - and feel sad for poster above who has transferred her hang ups to her children

the only time I find it unpleasant is when people either don't flush the toilet, or leave smears all over the bowl.

I actually have gone on 2 week vacations and I couldn't go the whole time, no matter how much I tried

It's not like it's intentional for me, generally I don't feel the urge to go and even if I sit on the toilet it won't come out if I think anyone is around

0sm0nthus · 30/03/2024 22:04

@Gemz1010 I get it & you have my complete sympathy.
Those who dont have these issues have no idea what's it's like, it really is not just a case of needing to 'get over yourself'

Unfortunately not, but you might find a way out.
