Is it seen to BU to go to the toilet at work?

Posting here for traffic. In the office this morning, there were 2 members of my team having a moan. Essentially, someone had gone to the toilet and had sprayed some of the provided air freshener. Staff member moans that the staff member in question should have waited until they got home before they "stink out the work toilets".

Staff members in question are mid 20s. It started a stupid debate in the office and basically, the older generation see no issue with going to the toilets at work. Younger generation claim they would be mortified and state they would not poop at work!

Is it a generational thing then? I'm of the mindset, if you have to go, you have to go!

YABU - Get a grip - poop away
YANBU - Gross! Hold it in until you get home!

My old manager would shit every single morning in our tiny workspace and leave both the toilet doors OPEN so the smell suffocate you. If you had to go to that part of the building. I found it disgusting especially since you would have to walk past/through the smell to get to the kitchen for food/drink.
I literally have no issue with anyone going to the toilet but I think in a small space it’s common sense to close the door?! Tbf he is a vile man.

FortofPud · 25/03/2024 16:23

The only reason they mention is to signpost loudly that it wasn't them.

Start saying "gosh you're protesting an awful lot, I'm starting to think this is to throw us off the scent that it was actually one of you". See if that stops it!

Do some people have magic arseholes that can hold a shit in all day? Wouldn't that be horribly uncomfortable and bad for you?
If it's frowned upon to use a toilet for its intended purpose is it better to shit your pants?
So many questions...

It is horribly bad for you but I can do it. I had such a hang up about it when I was a teenager that I’d literally hold it in for days if needed.

AInightingale · 25/03/2024 16:25

Find it quite funny that it's the younger generation in your workplace who are prissy about this. Do they talk openly about sex, sexual orientation, health and mental health issues, and other matters that used to be considered 'private'? If so it's mindboggling that they're so prudish about people using a private cubicle in the bogs to take a crap.

RosaBaby2 · 25/03/2024 16:25

It's fucking rude to point out the smell in the toilets. Everybody shits.

PrinceLouisWeirdFinger · 25/03/2024 16:25

Good grief. It’s literally the purpose of a toilet. Why wouldn’t you? It’s not like everyone else is popping out roses and daffodils. A toilet is designed for Richard the Thirds. By not pooping in it you are failing to let it fulfil its destiny.

Cauliflowery · 25/03/2024 16:26

I associate infrequent shitters with lorry drivers and generally unhealthy lifestyles.

I would not be giving up vegetables and exercise in order to avoid crapping at work.

It is reasonable to expect the toilets to be ok though - ventilation, air freshener, working flush etc.

Populations · 25/03/2024 16:27

God help me then. I have IBS and can go anything up to 8 times a day.

Spencer0220 · 25/03/2024 16:27

For years I had bowel issues because I was brought up that I could only poop at home.

Now, I poop as needed. So does DH. When at work, he just tries not to take too long.

DragonFly98 · 25/03/2024 16:27

Of course you don't poo at work that's really bad manners unless you have a bowel condition then 100% of course you have to. Although as you would never know someone's medical history you should never make anyone feel uncomfortable and keep opinions to yourself.

Twiglets1 · 25/03/2024 16:27

No it's not a "generational thing" that's a lazy stereotype.

I'm "older generation" and have never had a poo at work throughout decades of working. I just wouldn't feel comfortable and relaxed enough but everyone's different and it's no big deal.

I do think it's completely gross and ignorant behaviour when people leave a loo in a state though with skid marks etc when there's a toilet brush. Clean up after yourself please!

Unless you have a bowel condition or are not yet potty trained then yes of course you can choose to wait.

KimberleyClark · 25/03/2024 16:30

Perhaps the office should provide VI Poo sprays, you know the ones you spray in the bowl before you poo and apparently it stops the smell coming out.

ohlookimbackagain · 25/03/2024 16:31

So some people think it’s antisocial to have a bowel movement? I’ve heard it all now.

Strawpollplease · 25/03/2024 16:31

I am 54 and I literally never knew this was a thing. I have worked full time for the best part of 35 years and have never ever heard anyone make a comment about pooing at work. I am now completely freaked out!!

ohlookimbackagain · 25/03/2024 16:32

DragonFly98 · 25/03/2024 16:29

Actually it’s not a good idea. Ignoring the urge to poo on a regular basis can lead to constipation.

ElderMillenials · 25/03/2024 16:32

surely everyone will occasionally need to go somewhere other than home?! Appreciate some of the MN pearl clutchers would never do someone as disgusting as digest food!

It's a completely natural thing, everybody poops. As long as you're not leaving horrific mess or shitting on the floor.

Strawpollplease · 25/03/2024 16:32

And how in the name of fuck can it be “bad manners” to do a poo? I have no bowel issues but when I need to go I need to go. So so so weird.

SergeantZbornakFoodPolice · 25/03/2024 16:34

I used to work with a woman who admitted she’d rather have an accident in the car on the drive home than go at work. Absolute madness!

Perhaps women should all have c-sections when giving birth, because it's rude to show your private parts to strangers 🤔. That's how mad your comment sounds.

GLC789 · 25/03/2024 16:35

To each their own.

The real unreasonable thing here, is an adult berating someone for using a toilet for what it is intended for.

I find it utterly outrageous that someone would call another out, for doing a poop at work!? Wild!

BreatheAndFocus · 25/03/2024 16:38

It’s not a generational thing. I’ve never pooed at work and when I worked in an office, anyone having a poo in the Ladies toilets would be unusual and, yes, sometimes commented on.

If you have a medical issue then it’s different and can’t be helped, but surely most adults don’t poo at work! It smacks of laziness to me - couldn’t be arsed to get up a few minutes earlier to go before work. Sometimes people do it to waste time. I worked with a man like this who openly admitted he’d wait till he got to work to poo because he was then being paid to shit 🙄

Neither myself or any of my friends have ‘magic arseholes’. It’s like peeing. You don’t want until you’re absolutely bursting and have to rush to the toilet to pee in the middle of a work presentation. You go before the presentation. Same with pooing. You don’t sit there until you feel your arse is about to explode with crap. You go before or/and after work.

fungipie · 25/03/2024 16:38

WaltzingWaters · 25/03/2024 14:09

I’d try to avoid it. But if you really have to go, you really have to go!

this, quite simply.

Can't see the problem. We have a saying at home "he who smelt it dealt it".
