Am I cruel?

Hi,

This is a bit random.

Yesterday I was on the phone to a animal rescue place enquiring about volunteering.

The backdoor was open and my cat chased it and went to eat it. Luckily I intervened in time.

Last year he was stung, ended up really sick.

I apologised to the woman on the phone and said if I cannot get rid of the bee I will Hoover it up.

She replied that's really cruel and we don't have employees who harm animals and hung up the phone before I could explain.

Granted what I said wasn't the best, but it was massive and I was trying to get the bee out but it wouldn't budge.

Meanwhile my cat is stuck in the conservatory until it leaves.

Told my family - they agreed I was cruel.

Out of hours vet is £250 and he would have been stressed going the vets even before he was stung.

I feel awful. The bee died after I sprayed wasp spray on it.

@Meangirl6

"But I do feel cruel though"

Yes, you were.

Insects are so easy to put outside. Glass/cup and paper are easy to hand.

There is no excuse.

Thriving30 · 25/03/2024 19:56

Bees are so important! You are cruel OP.

Fedupwithitx · 25/03/2024 19:59

Spraying the bee with wasp killer is extremely cruel, there was plenty of other options that would have got the bee out alive and not writhing in pain.
I'm very glad the woman on the phone hung up on you - volunteering at a shelter is absolutely not for you.

DigitalDust · 25/03/2024 20:01

YABVU

You’d already made sure the bee couldn’t get to the cat - no need to kill it, just because your cat doesn’t like being shut in the conservatory.

Bees are more useful than cats anyway.

Spot the glaring contradictions.

He demands to go out in the garden but is a house cat who doesn't like to go in the garden?

Either try to make the story believable or make your mind up.

No, OP said he doesn’t like to go out of the garden.

KreedKafer · 25/03/2024 09:55

That bee is threatening your cat

So if the OP’s cat ‘threatens’ a mouse, am I allowed to kill the OP’s cat?

👏

Touché!

@Meangirl6

I was bitten by a bee sting only once, as a child,
i was in my childhoods friends house in their back garden,
moving my legs quite a bit back and for on swung,
there was no need to panic, should have just calmly opened the window or the door bit open ajar,

Bees rarely sting

Sorry - I'm dyslexic so struggle writing.

He's a house cat but goes in the back garden only, he is timid so won't ever go away from the garden.

He sits at the back door crying to go in the garden. He's in and out all day.

In the Summer i leave the back door open for him so he comes in and out when he wants.

But Winter I don't do that as its too cold and raining. It was just sunny the other day so the door was open.

Meangirl6 · 25/03/2024 22:09

OMG DOES ANYONE READ WHAT IVE SAID.

THE DOOR AND WINDOWS WERE OPEN. THE BEE WASNT LEAVING.

I KNOW I WAS WRONG AND I WILL NOT DO THAT AGAIN GOING FORWARD.

I DIDNT THINK MY ACTIONS THROUGH.

Not that it makes it ok but I'm donating to the bee charity tomorrow when I receive my wages.

My cat has been stung twice by a bee (he went to eat them) and once by a wasp. Each time he's ended up very ill.

I hate it when people write this on here. It’s become the new trendy thing to write hasn’t it 🙄

Cheesyfootballs01 · 25/03/2024 22:17

Could you just not put the bee in a glass and then released it outside? It does sound like a bit of a drama over nothing…

We get wasps or crane flys in the summer and I just shoo them out the window no bother?

Lokofloko · 25/03/2024 22:20

What I don't get in that story is that OP killed a bee that was in the house as she wanted to 'protect' the cat, but at the same time she lets the cat out in the garden, where bees are flying freely. No logic.

mrlistersgelfbride · 25/03/2024 22:22

You've had your arse handed to you here so I won't join in.
It sounds like you acted in the moment and didn't think it through. You were thinking of your cat.
I'm confused as to why you felt you had to tell the woman on the phone? Badly timed...it's a bit like a comedy of errors as she was the worst possibly audience for this story.
Glad your cat is ok, don't kill anymore bees, and move on.
Don't be too hard on yourself.

Edited

I try to intercept it as much as possible but can't always hence vet trips.

I can't keep him in as he cries non stop when he can't go out.

He doesn't do anything really accept climb a tree and sit there all day.

I'm very lucky that I've managed to stop him eating bees and wasps as much as I have done.

I basically watch him 24/7 because he's a bit dim. I love him so much but I have drove myself demented worrying over him

He also has other health issues which is why I watch him so much. I honestly don't want to lose him so whenever anything threatens him or could hurt him I panic.

I hope everyone calling the op cruel is a vegan. It would be incredibly hypocritical to berate the op while also being happy to eat animals with a far greater capacity to suffer than the bee

I am guessing the hypocrisy is rampant.

pasturesgreen · 26/03/2024 07:12

Sounds like a wind up, but on the off chance it isn't, not your finest hour OP.
You have been already, so I won't pile up

Meangirl6 · 26/03/2024 08:46

Honestly it isnt a wind up. I feel awful about it.

I won't do it again. My family have had words too.

I tried to manage the situation whilst my cat was distressed in the conservatory, whilst having an interview and hanging on for the bee to leave.

I honestly regret it.

OP posts:
toomanyy · 26/03/2024 09:09

Why would you tell someone during an interview that you'll hoover the bee up later? I don't get why they needed to know that? Let alone an animal rescue.

EmilyTjP · 26/03/2024 09:15

I definitely don’t think you should volunteer or work at an animal charity I’m afraid.

I found a bee trapped in my thick rug last year - it was exhausted. I enticed it onto a piece of kitchen paper and gave it a drop of honey. It had a short snooze - about 10 minutes or so - then it flew off.

Am I cruel?
Throckmorton · 28/03/2024 12:36

If you hoover it up, you will kill it. Leave bees alone FFS
