Am I cruel?

Hi,

This is a bit random.

Yesterday I was on the phone to a animal rescue place enquiring about volunteering.

The backdoor was open and my cat chased it and went to eat it. Luckily I intervened in time.

Last year he was stung, ended up really sick.

I apologised to the woman on the phone and said if I cannot get rid of the bee I will Hoover it up.

She replied that's really cruel and we don't have employees who harm animals and hung up the phone before I could explain.

Granted what I said wasn't the best, but it was massive and I was trying to get the bee out but it wouldn't budge.

Meanwhile my cat is stuck in the conservatory until it leaves.

Told my family - they agreed I was cruel.

Out of hours vet is £250 and he would have been stressed going the vets even before he was stung.

I feel awful. The bee died after I sprayed wasp spray on it.

OP posts:

You sprayed wasp killer on a bee?

And wonder why an animal welfare organisation is questioning your credentials?

Any else you casually kill for convenience?

Shuggie1234 · 25/03/2024 10:42

OP I think you should buzz off 🐝🐝🐝

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 25/03/2024 10:42

@Megifer yes - I was massively invested!
I spotted in outside my back door just as I was leaving for the school run. It looked dead, I only went to move it so the dog wouldn't stand on it! Its legs moved slightly, but I was in a rush so only had time to quickly put some sugar water down.
It was still there when I got back, so I brought it inside, cut it some fruit, popped it in a Tupperware box and put it in the smallest room in the house and then put the heating on for it 🤣
When the kids got back we then made a house out of a shoebox, cut some flowers and gave more water.
We released it the next morning and I swear it flew out of the box and hovered in front of us for a good 20 seconds - obviously showing its gratitude! 💁🏻‍♀️🤣

What a coincidence!

SwordToFlamethrower · 25/03/2024 10:45

I'm not a vegan, but I detest animal cruelty which includes the meat industry. Bees aren't food and the only business that humans have with bees is to accommodate them and protect them.

I eat meat but want a much better lot for food animals. I detest factory farming.

All animals need to eat and I am an animal so I don't see why I can't be angry about needlessly ending the life of an animal, because it was in someone's way.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 25/03/2024 10:45

I have many plants/bushes in my garden that attract bees. I've had a few come near me while I'm gardening. I've even handled some of the big ones when they've landed on me. Not once have I ever been stung. They are so docile and calm... Absolutely no need to kill it.

RaininSummer · 25/03/2024 10:46

It was cruel and I wouldn't take a volunteer for an animal charity who thought like that.

cerisepanther73 · 25/03/2024 10:48

@Meangirl6

I think 🤔 people have become disconnected from nature and its creature's and insects
and its ways that forgotten we are just part of nature too,

not better or higher than this,

Bees are essential to our eco systems and lives on 🌎 earth too.
we need to give them a helping hand to surive and thrive

Whats happened to a knowledge around nature,

and nurturing this etc.

Twinkletows · 25/03/2024 10:49

The bee was NOT threatening the cat. The bee was going about it's business and got stuck in a house.
If anything the cat was threatening the bee by chasing it. If the cat got stung then it is because the bee was defending itself.

Bee's are in severe decline and shouldn't be killed over something so silly. The cat was locked away and in no danger.

You will regularly find.my daughter in summer letting bees climb onto her hand and her depositing them on flowers to save them. She's never been stung (though knows there is that risk) and handles them gently and with respect in order to help them. Bee's are gentle creatures and don't go about trying to attack random cats and people for no reason.

BetteDavisChin · 25/03/2024 10:50

I'd prefer more bees and fewer people.

OSU · 25/03/2024 10:50

You said a massive bee? So a bumble bee? You can just pick those up. I did the other day when one was trapped against the glass in a garden centre.

Even honey bees are ok. One got into my t shirt on the line last year and I didn't realise, put the t shirt on and the bee buzzed really loudly as a warning before it would need to do anything drastic. A wasp would have just repeatedly stung me! I whipped that t shirt off so fast! The new flew off.

You were extremely cruel to spray the bee and your suggested action before of hoovering it was awful too. Shame on you.

TTPD · 25/03/2024 10:51

You are going to kill it anyway so what difference doest it make it ? A hoover will kill it instantly.

Why? Why is she going to kill it anyway? It's just a bee. Just open a window.

TimetoPour · 25/03/2024 10:51

This cannot be real.

Scalby · 25/03/2024 10:53

Yes you are.

Smurphy99 · 25/03/2024 10:55

YANBU. you were looking after your cat. I would never ever harm an animal but if my dog was in need of protection I wouldn’t think twice about it. On a few occasions my dog has been attacked by other dogs and I have absolutely kicked the fxxk out of them to protect my dog. Try not to feel bad. In the heat of the moment you made a call and I’m sure the ecosystem will survive minus one bee!

You kicked the fuck out of them, did you?

Not just a kick out to stop the dog from getting to yours, you kicked the fuck out of them?

KimberleyClark · 25/03/2024 11:01

At this time of year likely a queen bumble bee newly woken up from hibernating, still a bit groggy and looking for a safe place for a new nest. YWBVU to kill it rather than get it out somewhere safe.

SherrieElmer · 25/03/2024 11:01

OP, not only are you not cruel but you also display remarkable courage and strength in the face of adversity. Based on your past experience, you felt that someone you love was threatened and you made the right decision which is to eliminate the threat.
This is how the animal kingdom works. Bees do exactly the same, and any other animal for that matter.
Pay no attention to PP bashing you. I would love to see how they try to get rid of infectious bacteria in their body without trying to kill it by using medecines.

CurlewKate · 25/03/2024 11:03

Why would anyone kill a bee? Bees are not a threat to anyone. Remove your cat from the vicinity of the bee. Sorted.

You would never harm an animal but are happy to kick the fuck out of several dogs?

OP Your cat can protect itself and a bee wouldn’t harm it anyway. Yes you were cruel. There is never good reason for killing bees. They are harmless unless trapped and their life is threatened.

Betweenthe2 · 25/03/2024 11:06

It is insane that so many people who pay for others to kill animals with complex brains for them to eat are all up in arms over a bee. You do know what happens in slaughter houses don't you - and this applies to free range meet as well as factory farmed meat.

SherrieElmer · 25/03/2024 11:08

In what world are bees not harmless??? They have a stinger for a reason.

sanityisamyth · 25/03/2024 11:11

You killed a bee? And you're asking if you're cruel?

TTPD · 25/03/2024 11:13

you also display remarkable courage and strength in the face of adversity.

She hoovered up a bee, she didn't take on a tiger. What adversity are you talking about? What strength and courage? Fair enough to think what she did was fine, but it definitely wasn't remotely brave.

Malarandras · 25/03/2024 11:16

Bees are important for the ecosystem, or something like that, and they don’t usually sting. So you shouldn’t have hoovered it up no. But it doesn’t make you cruel, anybody that thinks so needs to look up the meaning of the word, or the meaning of the word ‘hyperbole’ and reflect a little. I also don’t see how it disqualifies you from volunteering at an animal charity. If they are that flaky you’re better off not there I reckon.
