Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

1000 replies

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

I agree it's been rubbish and this winter has felt so long because of the rain. I can't wait for summer to arrive. Plus the kids are off for two weeks soon and it will probably rain the whole time!

Zippedydoodahday · 24/03/2024 20:49

I can't relate to this at all. I have a preschooler and don't have a car yet I can't think of a single occasion this winter where rain has stopped play entirely.

I look at the hourly forecast to see when the driest part of the day is likely to be and tend to go out then if possible, but if we need to be somewhere at a specific time we just crack on. If necessary we wear wellies and raincoats and splash in puddles. I find the all in one waterproof suits good for keeping them cosy in a downpour too.

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/03/2024 20:49

Everyone - EVERYONE- with the exception of tortured poets, would rather a perfect spring day, with blue skies and gently scudding clouds, balmy temperatures

I agree that's absolutely what I'd prefer.

However I won't 'waste my life away' staying indoors for months on end because I don't fancy wearing a raincoat or can't manage an umbrella.

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 20:50

Everywhere else in the world when the sun comes out people flock to the beach, sunbathing, swimming, laughter, smiling etc. Nah - in the UK let's wait until it's absolutely pissing it down. We can then dig wet sand to build sandcastles that then get washed away in the rain - all the while getting soaked through and cold on a wet windswept beach with nobody else around because you're the only one mad enough to be out there. Then the real pleasure of quickly leaving the wet windswept beach to sit in your car drying out and trying to stave off mild hypothermia with a Cadbury's hot chocolate and trying to forget the trauma of your beach trip in the rain vowing never to do it again.

😂😂😂😂

I’ve just been sat ugly laughing over this for the last few minutes

I've got horses and am totally fucking sick of this goddanm rain. Everything is covered in mud, my hands have mud ingrained in them, my car is wrecked, my clothes and waterproofs are wrecked, my wellies are losing the fight and nearly get sucked off my feet if i ever have to venture more then 1 foot inside the gateway of the field and the poor ponies look utterly depressed going out into the swamp that used to be a paddock. I was looking at photos of last Feb and the ground was bone dry. Not a spot of mud. Then in march we had a shit ton of snow then a summer of rain and its not stopped pissing it down since.

I've got no choice but to don my leaky waterproofs and drag the kids out but it's soul destroying. Heavy rain forecast tomorrow :(

LarkRize · 24/03/2024 20:53

YANBU, I live in a wet part of the UK, west coast, and I can count the number of dry days we have had since November on one hand. I have multiple sets of waterproofs and am pretty resilient about getting out regardless by my god I am sick of the rain and yes, like you OP I am really feeling it affecting me mentally as well as physically.

I’ve been knocking back the vitamin d but I haven’t felt sun on my skin for literally months and it’s horrible. Nothing to be done about it, either, all we can do is suck it up and hope for a change…

Horses is another thing altogether
I had a lesson once where I wrung out my clothes after and every time we trotted I could hear the water sloshing in my boots
Wet muddy rugs, wet muddy horses, permanently damp, cold and with a tinge of mud ingrained into your hands
Then spring hits and they're all fucking bonkers

Lalalalalabambaa · 24/03/2024 20:57

I'm with you OP. Summer 23 lasted for about 4 weeks and it feels like it's been raining non stop for the last 10 months.
I'm so over walking the dogs with a toddler in tow and doing a massive clean up operation twice a day. Sick of shampooing mud out of my carpets.
Sick of having my lamps on all day because it's so dark outside.
It really affects my mental health and I feel like life goes on hold until the sun comes out as I have no motivation to do anything. Moan over 😂

I also can’t be the only one who doesn’t want to tramp around all day in ugly waterproof trousers. They’re not only hideous but sweaty and uncomfortable.

I’ve never owned waterproof trousers. A long raincoat and wellies is sufficient.

tiggersfamily · 24/03/2024 21:02

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:30

But I don’t enjoy the rain. It’s cold. The view is grey and bleak. I want to feel the sun on my skin, see the lovely view, stop for a picnic and just soak up the vitamin D. If that makes me some kind of weirdo then so be it.

Move countries

1dayatatime · 24/03/2024 21:04

@MaloneMeadow

"Wrapped up in good waterproofs and wellies you can do anything"

But it doesn't exactly make it enjoyable though does it?

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 24/03/2024 19:30

Where do you live that you feel it's rained non stop for months?

Well I'm in Essex Was abroad till late Feb and it's rained at least 2 out of 3 days since I returned. Makes me want to bugger off again

saintsript · 24/03/2024 21:06

Totally agree. I really want to start tidying up the garden and cleaning the grotty patio. Cars really need a clean. Start some planting. Washing outside. Plus would like to do some nice spring walks and visits to some seaside towns / national trust etc over Easter. I work full time so only have the weekends.

The forecast in the SW is full rain for the next 14 days all over the school holidays. It's just shit.

Gettingonmygoat · 24/03/2024 21:07

Maybe you need to emigrate.

StarDolphins · 24/03/2024 21:12

I agree op. It just never stops! The odd day day in the week when I’m at work but every weekend (bar today) has rained.

It’s fine saying wear suitable clothes but then a 1 hour walk turns into a 2 hour job because everything is soaked, caked in mud, the wet dog smells like we’ve all died & it takes forever to clean everything, it’s just miserable.

Livelovebehappy · 24/03/2024 21:13

I get you OP. Although I would say it’s been raining pretty much continuously since the end of summer last year. The parks and fields round here are like marshlands. It’s going to take weeks for the grass to dry out. It’s depressing. Today (and last Sunday too) has been lovely and sunny, although a bit chilly. And my headspace and energy is so much better when it’s like this.

Malarandras · 24/03/2024 21:15

Emmigrate?

Londonrach1 · 24/03/2024 21:15

Yabu. Just put waterproof clothes on and carry on. It always rains in the UK ...it's why everything so green.

No young kids here, but hear you over the rest, out with the dog every day I think I've developed rust! My mood is definitely suffering. Today has been the first day I have actually enjoyed a day off in a long while. It's been lovely to get outside in the 🌞.

Zone2NorthLondon · 24/03/2024 21:21

having had Irish & Scottish upbringing, you just crack the fuck on when it’s raining. It rains all the time. You deal with it

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 24/03/2024 21:21

Haven't even noticed. Except one day last week when I remember thinking it was nice. I kind of like the rain.

redxlondon · 24/03/2024 21:22

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:26

Like what? I don’t want to sit inside all day for weeks and weeks on end. It rained all through December. It rained all through January. It rained all through February. And now March. It’s fucking depressing. I’m not surprised so many people are vitamin D deficient when we barely go outside.

lol welcome to Britain…why don’t you move?!
So stupid, like others said, it just sounds like you’re not dressing properly or using your imagination for what to do (either in the rain or indoors!)

I hear ya, OP
It's all very well people just saying "go out in it anyway!" "Just wear appropriate clothing, stick your wellies on!"
Yes, that's good but when it does nowt but piss it down all day like it has here and for what seems like forever lately, it does start to get you down!
I remember the days of the kids being small and going stir crazy as I was stuck in with no money and it was too miserable weather wise to go kick a ball around the park or whatever.
It's amazing how a bit of sunshine can lift moods!
Just think nights are getting lighter this week, as the clocks go forward, which means hopefully the sun will show its face soon - loving all the daffodils and cherry blossom that's in full bloom at the mo, spring weather is on its way 💐
