Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

I can't remember last time it rained? We have all the back doors open and I feel hot most if the time (could also be the menopause, admittedly). Haven't worn a coat in weeks.

😂😂😂

HazelLion · 25/03/2024 13:27

The extreme amount of rain we've had this winter is actually a big deal. Crops aren't able to be harvested or planted, fields are flooded, it's a real disaster for farmers and we'll be suffering for it later this year when we can't buy any veg and we have to import everything.

It's not just about sucking it up and buying some waterproofs.

BlueBadgeHolder · 25/03/2024 12:45

@ILostMy20s I go out for a walk nearly every day. I still find the amount of rain we have had bloody awful. And what I really hate is the mud, mud and more mud. There are nice local walks I can no longer go because it is a mud pit.

I miss my favourite walks so much, but the mud 😫🤬

Where do you live that you feel it's rained non stop for months?

I can honestly agree with the OP, especially if you live up in the north of England, it is so depressing, rain and grey dampness for weeks and even months on end. Cold and damp is the worst, plus not being able to afford to really heat the home has took me out this year. I have noticed that this year particularly has been worse one in years. I do go out in it, but I dont enjoy it. Looking to move eventually to a more sunny climate having spent most of my life hating the rain.

umberelladay · 25/03/2024 13:29

@blabar
😂 ermmm I can remember three days it's not rained in the last two months! It's incredibly wet, there were 5 mallards in my back garden this morning.

I'm also itching to spend time in the garden, it's very annoying.

Washingupdone · 25/03/2024 13:29

Don’t worry in a couple of month’s time there will be water shortages anywhere south of Manchester /Sheffield and will be brown bare earth. Anywhere north will be green.

housethatbuiltme · 25/03/2024 12:59

Who asked for 'help'?

No one wanted to 'adjust' anything and no one has too.

There is so much ignorance from able bodied, financially secure people in milder area given unasked for and condescending advice based on their limited experience and local options on this thread.

Id rather be grumpy while warmish and dry than grumpy, cold, wet and in pain ffs no mind trickery or fancy footwear (many of which I can't wear btw) will fix that.

brilliant ! have a gold star

blabar · 25/03/2024 13:34

If just shows the variations across the U.K. because London hasn't had a lot of rain at all. I can't remember the last time there was any significant rain. Maybe there was one afternoon about 3 weeks ago? Otherwise it's been lovely - blossoms are out and the air is very mild.

But what can we do? This is climate change in action. We can all campaign for beavers to help mitigate flooding and we can adjust our own behaviours but largely it’s out of our hands so all we can do is stick our waterproofs on, get out there and demand more from the government.

Conversely, were anyone acknowledges yes it’s irksome but you have to crack on this is met with a howl of derision at the mere suggestion. An out pouring of how intolerable and insurmountable it has become to have rain in the uk. The dogs don’t like it, the children don’t like it, takes 6 weeks to dry off, there is a pile of unscrapped wellies and sodden broken toddlers sobbing in the corner. Any suggestions of making the best of it, cracking on, are regarded suspiciously and dismissed with a no!not round these part rebuke. Because no one else has ever has to entertain children, keep going etc in the rain. No! It’s all too much

Again hyperbole.

People do crack on. Kids go to school. People go to work. But it’s ok to moan without being told to emigrate!

Movinghouseatlast · 25/03/2024 13:37

I agree, it's hideous. Where I live we had 3 times the usual amount of rain in February. I don't understand why people are saying it's normal. It's not.

456pickupsticks · 25/03/2024 13:39

The answer has to lie somewhere in between here - yes it rains alot, yes ideally you'd just go out in the rain, but I do understand that that's not for everyone, and requires pricey gear to keep properly warm and dry.

The solution may be to go out and then come home when you're miserable/ wet/ cold. Pop your kids puddle suits on and your coat and wellies and go to the park, but once the kids start moaning, or your coat starts leaking, then come home, have a hot drink, get into dry clothes and curl up with a book.
Go out to the wood, let the kids splash about in muddy puddles, then get then changed in the car book, and sit in the car under blankets whilst you drink hot chocolate from a flask and eat your sandwiches.

And while your outdoor clothes are drying, or when it's properly pouring down, look for free indoor stuff to do - lots of libraries have a whole programme of free activities on, there's lots of places doing free crafts over easter, go to the supermarket and turn your food shopping into a scavenger hunt, look for free cinema showing in community centres, arrange playdates with friends, lots of those sculpture trails on with many in shopping centres, local museums maybe free for a wonder round, do some baking in the house.

Fair enough. But I'd suggest you really should move to another country. Reality and all that.

WalkingonWheels · 25/03/2024 13:17

Oh, there we are then. I won't worry about my electric wheelchair getting wet and breaking, leaving me bed ridden, because life's too short!

I'm a keen walker, and I'll walk even if it's raining, since it still beats being shut inside all day. Often, it's nicer walking on a wet day since it means it's quieter.

But you shouldn't be in a wheelchair... don't you know you are unreasonably wasting your life if you don't go on WALKS.

Even when we comment these things we are told the MAJORITY of people aren't disabled apparently (based on what info) so it doesn't count. With no follow on for how actually their ableist advice is fuck all use to many people.

SuitcaseBursting · 25/03/2024 13:39

Anyone live in the New Forest? We are due to leave dry London for there next week. Do I need to pack ‘good’ boots and hot chocolate and should I google wood crafting?

BumbleRose · 25/03/2024 13:40

I fully understand you OP I hate the rain as well and it does effect my mood. I always feel better and happier when the weather is better.

I also have young DC's who love being outdoors and its a shame when I have to say we cant go out, we cant go to the park, we cant get the bouncy castle out or you cant play in the garden right now because its wet, windy and just sh*t. We do go out on the bikes whenever its not actually raining but it makes it hard to make firm plans etc..

however this is the UK and its always been crap weather for 9 months. you can only really expect good weather June-September and even there there will be days/ weeks with lots of rain and days where its extremely uncomfortable and I want to remove my own skin to cool down.

its the sad reality of living in the UK

BlueBadgeHolder · 25/03/2024 13:41

@umberelladay I did read your post but I had not realised that at some time in the past you had saw a dad building a den with his DC and so now think that there is no reason to let mud and rain stop any of us playing with our kids outside. Honestly your comment makes no sense. The ground is sodden and muddy. It rains nearly every day and has for months. I have said many times there is so mud. I still get out a walk every day but it is not make dens in the wood kind of weather. It just is not.

Had not seen this post before making my comment above. You can moan all you want of course, in the rain- but if it really makes you unhappy and constantly grumpy, then a move to another part of the UK where it rains less, or out of UK altogether- maybe the only solution, if you can't, or don't want, to adjust to reality.

This is not an unpleasant thing to say- just facing reality.

housethatbuiltme · 25/03/2024 13:43

fungipie · 25/03/2024 13:39

Ah yes because everyone can ditch their responsibilities, shit out a wealth of money and be health stable enough to move to another country.

housethatbuiltme · 25/03/2024 13:43

Agreed, easier said than done. So adjusting and smiling in the rain, is much better than constant moaning and being miserable, probably.

BernardBlacksBreakfastWine · 25/03/2024 13:50

Carenz · 25/03/2024 12:34

What do you want people to say though? Some people may have tried to give you advice on how to embrace the rain and explained why the rain is here to stay. Your attitude has been a bit shitty on this thread and you’re clearly not interested in adjusting anything about yourself. No one can change the weather. Climate change means wetter winters. This is not going away.

You made a thread and people have tried to help you adjust your expectations but You haven’t wanted that so you’ll have to stay grumpy!

Sometimes people want a bit of solidarity- to be heard, to have their feelings listened to - not to feel that their (very justifiable) frustration is being scolded away by woodcraft enthusiasts 🤷‍♀️

fungipie · 25/03/2024 13:50

A move to another part of the UK is however probably possible for most.

Dartmoorcheffy · 25/03/2024 13:51

I live on Dartmoor. I'm so sick of the mud, the rain, the cold. Not being able to hang out washing. Bathing a muddy dog everyday. Wearing wellies everyday. I just want some bloody sunshine.

Knitgoodwoman · 25/03/2024 13:55

Wettest February on record, the flooding has been devastating around here, and caused no end of trouble trying to get anywhere (15 minute journeys turning into 2 hours due to diversions), for weeks on end.

We love walking, in all weather, but the mud is really grating now. So I get it Op.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 25/03/2024 13:56

Hot chocolate can fuck off. It's foul. I don't want to have the revolting gloop anywhere near me. I want to drink an immoderate amount of very cold, dry champagne in the sunshine.

Mud can do one, too. Sick of it.
