Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

1000 replies

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

Had not seen this post before making my comment above. You can moan all you want of course, in the rain- but if it really makes you unhappy and constantly grumpy, then a move to another part of the UK where it rains less, or out of UK altogether- maybe the only solution, if you can't, or don't want, to adjust to reality.

This is not an unpleasant thing to say- just facing reality.

I have not advised anyone move away or relocate. I’m simply saying what’s the actual point of the habitual handwringing & moaning . You literally can’t stop the rain. You literally do have to just have to crack on. Sure, many of you find rain intolerable but well being maudlin doesn’t stop the rain. Also, the fact that other folk are not disconsolate and are trying to make best of it doesn’t make them giddy jolly hockey stick types, it just means they’re getting by

BernardBlacksBreakfastWine · 25/03/2024 13:50

Sometimes people want a bit of solidarity- to be heard, to have their feelings listened to - not to feel that their (very justifiable) frustration is being scolded away by woodcraft enthusiasts 🤷‍♀️

I agree and I tried to be but the OP has been a bit rude to a fair few people. As I’ve said yes it’s been wet and this is indicative of the serious issues, but the OP has been a bit obstinate - in my opinion.

Love your name by the way, one of the best things to ever grace our screens! Shame we will ever see such a sitcom again, unfortunately.

AStepAtaTime · 25/03/2024 14:02

This thread proves that British people like to argue about the weather. It's nearly full up already! We do get a lot of different types of weather on this island, and we are all ready with our opinions on it! I personally like to talk about the weather - people joke about "the weather" being a hot topic of conversation but it really is - the first thing most people will talk to me about in the school playground/neighbour/in the supermarket is what the weather is doing! It's almost a cultural right.

We will moan in April because it's raining. Then we'll moan again in July/August that it's too hot. Then people generally quiet down a bit in Sep. Then October you'll start seeing all the "winter is coming" threads and that will continue through to December, which is another quiet month because people are focussing on Christmas. January/February and March are the best months for weather discussions. As this thread proves. Spring in general is a catalyst month for people to grumble, because the weather is so variable.

BernardBlacksBreakfastWine · 25/03/2024 14:06

The thing is, if you had a bit of a moan about the weather in real life, you’d expect people to acknowledge that, yes, the weather is a bit shit. You would be mightily pissed off if the person you were talking to scolded you for being annoyed and started suggesting all sorts of Famous-Five-type outdoor pursuits!

Why do the ‘only unsuitable clothing’ people think that’s what OP wants?! She wants a moan!! That’s what we do in Britain where weather is concerned, surely? She wants your take on the misery of rain - your worst experiences of being up to your neck in mud whilst the toddler falls face first in a puddle.

Not woodcraft.

Let the woman moan FFS.

It’s fairly obvious that people will be cracking on to the best of their ability. I’ve done the ‘small children in the rain’ routine. You do your best. It’s a bit shit but if it’s the only option, you make the best of it. But it’s objectively worse than the same outdoor activities in the sunshine!

And there comes a point, after an unbelievably long, damp winter, when, instead of jollying the kids along into their wellies again , you just want to go “Oh for fuck’s sake!” So you turn to Mumsnet… and what do you get?! This shit show of a thread! 😂

housethatbuiltme · 25/03/2024 14:07

fungipie · 25/03/2024 13:48

Agreed, easier said than done. So adjusting and smiling in the rain, is much better than constant moaning and being miserable, probably.

Your telling us to get over disabilities ffs.

Do you really think I would live my life with disabilities if a smile would just fix it. Why have doctors never thought of that?

For many of us it is literally not possible to just put on wellies and be mind over matter.

I mean me and several others (including a woman in a wheelchair) keep getting told to just 'go for a walk' bet a lot of mumsnetters also revel in telling people with suicidal depression to go for a walk... cures everything here.

Thinking happy thoughts fixes fuck all and many people can't just walk it off.

However disability or not people are allowed to feel pissed of at unprecedentedly shitty weather that never seems to end. I have no doubt even in the able bodied normally fine people it will be effecting mental health, its been grey since before summer last year and SAD is a very real thing.

Delatron · 25/03/2024 14:15

It’s even more annoying when people start to moan when we have one day above 20 degrees after 6 months of incessant rain.

I’m with the OP. It’s shit and depressing.

Pretty much. I'm reminded of Gandalf in the Hobbit: "It is raining Master Dwarf, and it will continue to rain until the rain is done."

Wotsdestory · 25/03/2024 14:28

OP I completely get you. I'm in Ireland and some farmer friends told me yesterday that their fields are so sodden that they haven't been able to plant their potato crop yet. This will mean that spuds will be in short supply and very expensive for consumers later in the year.

I flew back from London recently and as we were descending I could see lots of fields with water lying on them, never saw that in this part of Dublin before.

I hate the faff of dressing "appropriately " for the weather, is it cold and wet or just wet, how many layers do I need? Where are my boot socks so my feet don't turn into bricks of ice, should I wear a hat with a brim to keep my specs dry or a wooly hat to keep my head warm (I've never found headgear that combines both!) Gloves, OK til one of the dogs poops and I have to take a glove off to get the poop bag out of container and pick up the crap. Have a great pair of waterproof lined boots but they've started leaking recently and I can't afford to replace them, so it's the wellies now. Not comfortable for my wonky feet.

And then when I get back from my walk the wet mucky boots have to come off and be stored somewhere in my small terrace house, and the raincoat has to be left somewhere to drip dry, hat and gloves on the rad to dry off. Just all very miserable. Add kids and dogs into the mix...

Can I remind people that we're not all the same, some of us are not "outdoors in all weathers" types. We don't all have a pot of gold to enable us to move to sunnier climes, and indeed many of us have jobs/commitments/family and friends that keep us where we are. I dream of winning the lottery and moving to Ibiza - that's the only way my dream could ever come true!

However some things I do to try to cheer myself up when stuck indoors is make the house look pretty with some fairy lights, a cheap bunch of flowers from Aldi, little table lamps switched on in corners and putting the heat on low during the day. Bit risky that but even an hour of heat morning and afternoon does make the place feel cosy. Then I bake with my grandkids or do some art, or take them to the library and let them pick something that'll keep them occupied for a little while at least. Oh and I take a high dose of vitamin D every day.

oakleaffy · 25/03/2024 14:30

I get you, @GoodnightAdeline
It’s been the wettest winter in 130 years.

Goodness knows how farmers are managing with saturated fields.

I’ve not known a winter as wet as this.
Im out every day in it - Dog has to have paw balm on her feet as her digital pad was cracked with endless wet and foot washing.
It’s very tedious.

WhatNoRaisins · 25/03/2024 14:30

See for me it's that anything gets old when it hangs around too long. In November I'm up for some boots, hot chocolate, cosiness and a change in pace. By March I'm sick of it and want something a bit different.

nowtygaffer · 25/03/2024 14:33

I'm another one absolutely sick of the rain. I think the people who are not that bothered by it are either young/in good health/in a drier part of the country.

I wouldn’t say that I’m not that bothered by it, I am also none of those things. I just don’t allow rain to keep me cooped up indoors for months on end for fear of going mad

aggretsuko · 25/03/2024 14:45

Yourethebeerthief · 24/03/2024 19:30

I agree OP. The rain is starting to really affect my mood. West coast of Scotland it is raining constantly. I know it was different the past few years because of my Facebook memories. This is a particularly bad year.

We do get out in all weather but it is still affecting my mood terribly. Add the constant viruses into the mix and I'm done. The occasional sunny day comes along and I get fooled into spring cheer. Then the forecast for another week of nothing but rain brings me crashing back to earth.

Yes, according to my Facebook memories I was on a beach with my family enjoying ice cream 7 years ago! We were in big coats but the sun was beautiful. Now even when there is a nice day chances are one of us is too ill to enjoy it, with the never ending cycle of lurg which the crappy weather can't be helping.

TheBreezyOne · 25/03/2024 14:47

Most big parks and forests have visitor centres and cafes, it doesn't usually rain all day, so buy some weatherproof gear, get outside, walk, enjoy a coffee in the cafe, and you'll all feel better when you get home.
It's not unreasonable to dislike it, but if you only go out when it's sunny you will have a lot of miserable days indoors.

tattygrl · 25/03/2024 14:51

i do understand, OP, but remember we're right towards the end of the cold part of the year: this means we're fed up to the back teeth of dark, cold and wet, and it feels like it's been going on forever! Warm, dry, sunny days are coming. It just feels the worst right now because we're at the back end of winter and desperate for light and heat.

God, do we really have to preface every post with a "this doesn't apply to you if you're disabled" label, or is it possible that you actually...I don't know...use some common sense when reading these before you work yourself up into frothing outrage?

At no point did the OP mention being disabled. And, as I said in another post (which you must have neglected to read before hastily typing away), I said my post was aimed at people who are perfectly able/safe to be able to get outdoors, even on days where the weather's not great, but choose not to anyway because they're worried about getting wet or whatever.

But feel free to carry on ranting if it makes you feel better. We still can't control the weather either way though, so even if you're disabled there's still something far more productive you can do with your time than whinging about it online.

fungipie · 25/03/2024 15:07

housethatbuilt me- I was replying in general and to the OP. No mention of any disability at all.

I am disabled myself- but can walk now (couldn't for a long time) and force myself to go and walk, pain or no pain. And I feel truly sorry, having been there myself, and having to combat pain day in, day out (still now) for anyone who is too disabled to get out in poor weather. 100%.

sheflieswithherownwings · 25/03/2024 15:09

I hear what you're saying - the rain and lack of sun this winter has felt relentless. We've only just recently moved back to the UK from a part of the world known for it's rain during the winter months - but honestly this has felt much worse than that, and I don't remember it ever being this bad. It is depressing. Usually it's broken up with at least a few days of sunshine and warmer weather - but I don't recall a full day of sunshine (or even several hours in a row) in the last 3-4 months. The difference I think with where we used to live, is that in summer we had guaranteed warm weather and sunshine for at least 4 months (and no rain) but we don't even have that to look forward to here which makes the winter's even harder to endure.

RandomForest · 25/03/2024 15:11

I've heard the summer is going to be quite a good one.

Whatever that means. UK

It has been an execptionally depressing winter, very dark, miserable but I don't think the climate of world affairs has helped.

Bloom15 · 25/03/2024 15:17

I agree OP. I have severe asthma made worse by damp weather and am pissed off how much it has rained this year. We've had a lot more rain than usual where I am. I want to go for nice walks but can't

What part of the country do you reside? Could be a factor!

Greeneyegirl · 25/03/2024 15:26

I agree, it's been incredibly wet and warm this year. I'm in the South east. I think there's only been 3 days this autumn/winter I've had to defrost the car in the morning and that's because it's been so warm and wet. Husband cycles to work and most years has to take a change of clothes once a week. It's every single day this year. Weeks and weeks of rain. We have a toddler and would like to go to the farm or the park at the weekends. Do some gardening, even just walk to the shops.

Bloom15 · 25/03/2024 15:32

And agree with PPs that my Facebook memories shows much better weather in previous years
