Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

Op I'm with you.
Unless you live in London with 100s free museums to go to and let dc run around its really hard.

Where I live we've hardly had any frosts at all. It's been constant rain, we had to turn back from 2 Xmas outing due to intense rain and flooding. It's not always been like this.

It's been utterly depressing.

legocatcooker · 24/03/2024 20:22

OP I agree with you. I don't normally mind a bit of rain, in fact I quite like it but it's just relentless and the also the neverending grey is so depressing.

MagpiePi · 24/03/2024 20:23

SergeantDawkins · 24/03/2024 20:09

A raincoat and wellies from Asda is not prohibitively expensive.

It’s not freezing rain in spring, it’s just wet

You’ve clearly never worn cheap rainwear. And you need waterproof trousers of some sort for toddlers, not to mention waterproof gloves. Cold is subjective, but if you are wet it makes it worse.

But, I get the message: You are not allowed to be miserable in the British winter.

SergeantDawkins · 24/03/2024 20:24

Sadly an increase in rainfall is a direct result of climate change. The warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture. So we’d better get used to it 🌧️🌧️🌧️☔️☔️☔️

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:26

Like what? I don’t want to sit inside all day for weeks and weeks on end. It rained all through December. It rained all through January. It rained all through February. And now March. It’s fucking depressing. I’m not surprised so many people are vitamin D deficient when we barely go outside.

My friend who lives in the south of america just sent a picture she took from her car while on a road trip. The sky was so blue and sunny! I was telling her how envious as I was as I looked out at the grey sky here. Lol. It’s dire 🥹

Going away next month and I can’t wait to soak up the sunshine. I think it’s the grey skies that tend to accompany the rain here that gets me down. But also I wear glasses and it’s annoying when the rain gets on them.

oldestboy · 24/03/2024 20:26

I agree, normally I enjoy all weathers and it doesn’t bother me but it’s been so relentless this year. I can’t get jobs done outside because it’s so rare to have a full dry day. Absolutely sick of it and there is nothing enjoyable about walking around outdoor attractions in the rain, even in waterproofs.

protectthesmallones · 24/03/2024 20:05

This rain is so important.

We need 12 weeks constant rain to replenish after the exceptionally hot and dry summer last year. Even the big trees started dying. I think it's fortunate we have this rain.

Drier times are coming but for now we need the rain.

Are you on glue?

it rained the whole of August last year.

AffIt · 24/03/2024 20:28

As we say in Scotland, 'today's rain is tomorrow's whisky'.

I get you, OP, sometimes dealing with the weather in this country sucks, especially at this time of year when it feels like longer than five or six months of it, but it is what it is and you just have to adjust your mindset to deal with it.

I lived in Singapore for 18 months and dealing with the same weather ALL THE TIME was weird. I prefer it here.

Yes and more atmospheric instability means the loopy jetstream gets stuck for longer periods. Which is why it's been unrelentingly shit

hattie43 · 24/03/2024 20:28

We are in the south and are totally fed up with this constant rain . It feels like life is on hold and to be gotten through not enjoyed

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 24/03/2024 20:29

I love the beach in the rain.

You can so much better sand castles and it's easier to dig wet sand.

No one around.

They getting into the car, changing into dry warm clothes and having a hot chocolate

Ineffable23 · 24/03/2024 20:30

I hate this idea we're meant to all pretend to find rain and overcast skies pleasant. I don't mind that other people don't mind them but I do.

I hate weather like this and we've had the wettest February since records began. I love summer, I'm like a lizard. Yes, I would probably be happier with the weather if I lived somewhere on the med, but that's not where my life is.

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 20:30

I think a few people are romanticising ‘blustery, rainy, bracing days on the beach’. In reality it’s 11 degrees, and fucking nobody wants a sweaty hot chocolate in an anorak.

By this stage of the year I am SICK OF MUD.

If I loved by the coast though, I would maybe take a tarp to the beach and sit under it.

Moreorlessmentallystable · 24/03/2024 20:31

It gets tiring. I feel the same, I wouldn't mind so much if I knew we'd have a good spring from April and at least 2 good summer months, but it's rarely the case. Last year it was still wet and miserable in the west coast of Scotland til nearly end of April, then we had a few good weeks end of may to mid June (so, about 3 weeks) then it was wet again the whole of the kids holidays (July and August) then from September it's practically winter again. This winter has been terrible for high winds too...cherry top!

FloatyBoaty · 24/03/2024 20:32

I agree OP.

We’re a very outdoorsy family. I’ve always been a firm believer in the old “no such thing as bad weather” line.

But where I live is now in the 8th consecutive month of well above average rainfall and I’m utterly sick of it. I’ve had serious SAD this year, and although I get it every year, this year has been especially bad. And it’s because it’s been grotty weather.

And yes, I can still go out in the rain. But when every towpath, footpath and vaguely green space is utterly waterlogged, and the rain won’t stop, popping out for a quick 30 or 40 minute walk at lunchtime to get some fresh air and my heart rate up isn’t just less appealing - by the time I’ve togged up, got back, fixed face and hair for afternoon zooms etc- it’s just not worth it.

Then there’s my little container garden- all my spring bulbs have been drowned. My house feels permanently damp. I feel permanently damp. The doors open straight into the house with no entryways or cloakrooms, so floors are constantly being mopped… over it doesn’t cut it.

Yes I understand the British climate. Yes I know global warming/ climate emergency. Yes I know if I don’t like it move (except Brexit fucked that as well, so actually now I’m trapped on this dismal wet rock). Seeing “no such thing as bad weather” now gives me the rage. There is. And I’ve seen it for the last eight months.

phew that felt good!

Garlicking · 24/03/2024 20:33

I used lived in the tropics (and preferred it), at a point where it rains really hard at 4pm every day for about 90 minutes. It's shit if you can't avoid being out in it, but bloody great to know when it's going to happen!

My ideal climate would be 21° all day, 17° all night, and chuck it down for a couple of hours from 2am 🙂 I might tolerate several weeks of winter, just to kill off the bugs you get in the tropics - but I hate the cold.

freespirit333 · 24/03/2024 20:33

Also DC here who hates the rain so much he screams and cries. No amount of jollying will fix that.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 24/03/2024 20:33

I think it depends where in the UK you are. We live 250 miles away from my parents, and they have way, way more rain than we do. Heavier when it comes, and it lasts much longer. They have lots more rain now than they did when I was growing up.

Tomatina · 24/03/2024 20:34

You're not alone OP, it is so depressing. Every day is the same, grey, wet and cold, or grey wet and windy. Where we are we have hardly seen the sun since October and now we're coming up to the end of March and the forecast is, wait for it, grey and wet and cold. I've known colder winters, but this is the greyest and most sunless I can remember.

You are correct, rainfall has increased in the UK by 9% since 1990 if I recall the stats correctly. And the distribution has changed too, so there is a much larger volume of rain falling in shorter periods.

It is having a terrible effect here. Trees are having their roots undermined causing them to fall, and all the drains are overloaded. Ground is waterlogged and it is muddy everywhere.

I'm with you, it really sucks. And there will probably be a hosepipe ban in a couple of months too.

I thought this was the worst winter, I don't drive I wore waterproof trousers, carried extra socks because inevitably the ones I had would be wet by the time I got into work, picked up chilbains, it was BEAUTIFUL today in the west coast and that's me just in and left at 8am today, I do think about relocating for winter

LondonPleaseButJustForOneDay · 24/03/2024 20:36

It's so fucking annoying when the OP is asked one simple, non outing question repeatedly and that question gets repeatedly ignored!
