Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

1000 replies

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

@GoodnightAdeline

Can’t hold an umbrella and push the pram

You can still wear a raincoat though, or poncho.

😳

Slippy equipment

Makes the slide more fun though!😆

SparkyBlue · 24/03/2024 20:07

I hear you OP. Even our dog now hates the rain and hides when I try to walk him. I appreciate what people are saying about waterproofs etc but sometimes you just want a nice easy trip to the playground. My DC also hate the rain and really it's only the pre schooler who would wrap up and head out no way would the tween do that. Poor DD is just mad to play outside with her chalk and draw on the path and bring her Barbies and dolls out. Plus I'm in the west of Ireland so possibly way way worse here than parts of England. Around October DD1 commented that we'd not had even one day of crunching through autumn leaves as they were just soggy and slippery from constant rain. It was actually dry and sunny on Friday so we walked home from school as they had a half day for Easter holidays. Yes it was dry but the wind nearly blew the heads off us and then an unexpected shower of rain appeared. So yes OP I feel your pain.

This rain is so important.

We need 12 weeks constant rain to replenish after the exceptionally hot and dry summer last year. Even the big trees started dying. I think it's fortunate we have this rain.

Drier times are coming but for now we need the rain.

The exceptionally hot summer was in 2022. Last year wasn't (thank goodness) - not in the UK, anyway.

Anyway, the water companies are too rubbish to save all the water we've had this winter and there will probably be hosepipe bans by July.

Also - I saw my neighbour watering his grass today. I am in the south-east but it has not been dry! People are quite mad.

grapeomelette · 24/03/2024 20:08

OP you are not alone. Solidarity! I am old and I can't remember a winter as wet as this one. I go out walking in all weathers - yes I have the right clothes - but dear God my heart sinks when the forecast is yet another day of rain. It's desperate. I live in the SW btw.

Goddessonahighway · 24/03/2024 20:09

Puddlesuit + wet slide = toddler flying high. Some will love it, others not.

Mynaddmawr · 24/03/2024 20:09

I live in North Wales so am accustomed to a lot of rain (although to be fair we've had some glorious sunshine in March so far). I appreciate it can be draining after a couple of weeks, but get some waterproofs and wellies on you and embrace it! Do you have any woodlands near you? Let the trees shelter you and go out spotting all our lovely native mosses. Go for a river walk and appreciate the power of a full raging river. It's also refreshing going for a run in the rain because it keeps you nice and cool. Think how much more you will appreciate the sunshine after all the rain. You can't change the weather, but you can change how you react to it. Failing that, move abroad? 😅

SergeantDawkins · 24/03/2024 20:09

MagpiePi · 24/03/2024 20:06

And all that ‘right’ clothing costs a fuck ton of money and lasts about 5 minutes with growing children, and then you need somewhere to dry it all out before you go out for the next bout of fun fun fun! in the pissing, freezing rain and mud.

I get you OP.

A raincoat and wellies from Asda is not prohibitively expensive.

It’s not freezing rain in spring, it’s just wet

AttaThat · 24/03/2024 20:09

We do like wrapping up in decent clothing and going out in the rain. But not all the time. Sometimes I’m just sick of everything being wet all the time. And we can’t use our garden properly because it’s clay and a mud bath in winter.

All the dark blue in this picture got 200% of average rainfall in February. It’s not just you.

Tangled123 · 24/03/2024 20:10

I agree with you OP. IMO, Winter should be cold and frosty, with blue skies. It means you can still go outside if you’re wrapped up warmly enough. You can still go outside when it’s raining, but that just isn’t as enjoyable. I feel like Winters are getting more rainy instead of cold here, which is very depressing. We only got a handful of freezing days this winter.
it’s not that easy to just leave either, due to visas and language barriers.

SergeantDawkins · 24/03/2024 20:07

Yes, the combination of waterproof trousers and heavy rain turns slides into a sort of water chute! As long as you position yourself to catch them before they fly across the playground it's a huge amount of fun.

Exceptionally hot and dry summer last year? What part of the UK are you in? We had a few warm, sunny weeks in June and after that it literally rained non-stop! I could count on one hand the amount of dry days we had in July and August

Spudthespanner · 24/03/2024 20:13

I'm staying to tally up the "no bad weather, only bad clothing" count. Oh and the "are your family made of sugar?" count.

🙄

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 24/03/2024 20:14

Embrace it, we went swimming today, came out and it was lovely and sunny albeit windy, so got some washing out then went to the beach for a walk and a hot drink. It's only March.
Also where do you live? Friend of mine complains relentless about the rain but has chosen to move to Manchester from the South East.... Not sure what she expected

Heavy hail showers here yesterday.

AnneElliott · 24/03/2024 20:16

I get you op - I'm so over the winter and want to feel the sun!

And I think it was 2022 that was the long hot one? 2023 was a bit of a washout if I recall correctly?

ssd · 24/03/2024 20:16

You aren't wrong op, the rain is shite.

WestwardHo1 · 24/03/2024 20:17

It has been a very wet winter following a very wet autumn following a very wet summer. July was notably awful. Even for the UK

Those posters saying "it's winter, get over it" are overlooking this fact. No wonder people are sick of it.

WhatNoRaisins · 24/03/2024 20:17

I'm wondering if I need to figure out some more urban type walks with cafes to duck into for the showers and just the puddles to manage outside. Sometimes we take the kids for a walk to look at stuff in B&Q.

AnnieSnap · 24/03/2024 20:18

I live in the North East (UK) and it’s rained nearly every day for 5 bloody months. I think it’s been pretty much the same in other parts of the country. I am also going stir crazy. I have an 11-month-old Weimaraner (large, active, a bit nutty, but adorable). The walks are no longer enjoyable (haven’t been for a while now). The ground is water-logged. She loves/needs to run. The mud splashes up all over her, even inside her ears. Cleaning her up (transferring some of it onto me in the process) is a long and unpleasant process and has to be done after every walk. We loved our walks in the woods and along the river last summer, but it seems a distant memory now.

I also have arthritis and damp weather triggers a flare up of more pain (changes to the barometric pressure apparently). I am seriously frustrated with the weather as a consequence of all this.

I am very aware that this is a first world problem. I know I don’t have it bad. I have enjoyed this little rant though. Good to get it off my chest, so thanks for the thread @GoodnightAdeline

wonderstuff · 24/03/2024 20:18

Completely with you op, it’s miserable, I’m in Hampshire and there’s been so much rain the water table is much higher than normal and a fair number of flooded roads and fields near me. I’m desperate for sunshine.

Marine30 · 24/03/2024 20:19

I’m with you OP - it has been a LOT more wet than normal this year. I spend loads of time outside and I agree that this is the wettest one in many years. I feel your pain with two young children. Whatever anyone says it is 5x easier to get everyone out the door when it’s not raining cats and dogs. It does get you down.

SergeantDawkins · 24/03/2024 20:20

DoraSpenlow · 24/03/2024 20:15

Ok…. No one is saying you have to go out every time the weather is bad though.

Just seems silly to keep staying indoors due to normal rain, albeit lots of it this winter, and then moan about it. You can choose to just make the best of a soggy day.

We live in a rainy country with very random weather in spring and autumn. You can either avoid it or get used to it and get on with life.

Oh do fuck off, we’ve had record levels of rain for these early months, the river levels are peak.

We’re farmers so it’s a bit more serious than another rainy Saturday, we’re three weeks behind spring drilling and not much got drilled in the autumn because it has pissed it down since October.

If we don’t plant soon, we won’t get a spring crop in. There will be a huge knock on for consumers because commodities will hit livestock enterprises massively and this will be passed on. I’ve never seen so much land uncultivated at this point during spring, it’s a massive talking point in the industry.

Thankfully we all have waterproofs so it hasn’t wrecked our social lives, your kids will not melt but the agricultural sector might well face serious damage.

I have one that will go out whatever the weather and not complain. And another who cannot tolerate a chilly breeze.
