Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

Jeez YABU, as my mother says about going out in rain "you won't dissolve".

I love the rain, I'm from a very rainy part of the UK, so was always used to it and unbothered by it. We still stay on the beach if it starts to rain.

Although, we don't wear waterproofs, as they're not my cuppa tea, so I just change clothes when we get home.

I love doing my daily walk when it's raining because there's usually no one else out, I live in England now and the area I'm in, people seem to be allergic to the rain, but that's fine by me as it means I have the lovely park to myself!

Heatwaves are a different story, I can't stand the heat!!

LuckySantangelo35 · 24/03/2024 22:21

I don’t know why it’s so hard for people on here just to acknowledge that often the weather in the Uk can be shite! It’s so bizarre! Just call a spade a spade ffs

DrCoconut · 24/03/2024 22:21

I once had someone on here try to convince me that going to the park after school in November when the temperature is in single figures, it's lashing with rain, dark before teatime and the cafe is closed is no different to going in July when it's lovely and warm and the kids can run round for hours and have an ice cream.

TheSquareMile · 24/03/2024 22:22

@GoodnightAdeline

Do you and your partner have the kind of jobs which would allow you to consider relocating to somewhere like Australia or New Zealand, should your circumstances allow that and you be eligible?

If the weather is really making you so unhappy, it's a thought.

Chocolatecornflakes · 24/03/2024 22:22

I agree op. If it's not raining its dismal and grey and often cold. Today was beautiful though and on a weekend! I felt blessed!
I have found my depression makes me think exactly like you sound and it's often related to the crappy weather. I dislike living in the UK but now we have brexit my hopes of one day leaving have been somewhat dashed. The only option in my mind is to leave. Nowhere else seems to be so grey, dark and dismal all the time. It's depressing.

Brightandbubly · 24/03/2024 22:22

I agree as an owner of 2 dogs it feels like it’s been relentless since last October, really enjoy cold frosty clear mornings, its got me down going out in wind and rain, wellies caked in mud and dogs too .

DragonScreeches · 24/03/2024 22:22

YANBU. I live in a normally very rainy part of the UK. It has been far, far worse than usual and has definitely affected my mood.

MaloneMeadow · 24/03/2024 22:23

LuckySantangelo35 · 24/03/2024 22:20

@MaloneMeadow

urgh no who wants to traipse around in welly’s and waterproofs

Well.. if you’re going to complain about spending all of your time indoors then that’s the alternative. Can’t have everything! Given the choice I’d obviously prefer not to have to do every single dog walk in wellies but life goes on, rain or not.

It's a Mumsnet disease for sure. Anything to be contrary.

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:27

I want to enjoy being outside. I want to have picnics, long walks, go to the park, all without getting absolutely drenched and covered in mud and having to strip off the second I get home. So yes bad weather does exist.

"I want to have picnics"

Sorry, but no one in the UK has picnics between mid-October and end of April. We also don't have BBQs during the same period of time, for the same reason, it's not the right season.

Yes it’s shite. You still crack the fuck on though. Work, school, shops. You’re not immobilised. You’re wet, it’s wet, you keep going. It’s a spade alright, a big wet spade

Yes, it’s very strange.

“Crack the fuck on, crack the fuck on”. You do know it’s perfectly reasonable to crack the fuck on and have a fucking good moan on mumsnet right?

Absolutely. And acknowledge the fact that it has been exceptionally bad recently. I am quite old and can't remember the last time it rained so much.

Your dogs walk in wellies?

NosnowontheScottishhills · 24/03/2024 22:26

I live in an area with one of the highest rain falls in the UK but anecdotally I would say this year was drier than last year. Last year was unbelievable I talked to farmers in the 60s and 70s who said they’d lived here all their lives and had never experienced as much rain as we had last year.
My children are grown up but I walk twice a day come hell of high water I live by the sea and walk to the beach and paddle in the sea in my wellies (when the tides right) all the year round. I agree with others having the right clothes/footwear is essential also IME once youre out it’s rarely as bad as it looks. Rain shapes our landscape, Im surrounded by stunning green pastures all the year round that because it rains all the year round here. Even in the rain the beach is beautiful.

Smashieandnicey · 24/03/2024 22:26

@Zone2NorthLondon

You love this phrase of yours "crack the fuck on"

Everyone is very proud of how hardy and stoic you are. Don't worry.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/03/2024 22:26

Where do you live?

It's been beautiful here today, I sat out in the garden with the sun on my face this afternoon <smug> I live in the south west.

If you’re near the coast then beach walks have been a saviour for us recently with a mud magnet golden retriever. I figured we were already going to get soaked so may as well get a bit more wet! Much easier to deal with a soggy dog than a filthy one

chillidoritto · 24/03/2024 22:27

I will remind people of this thread when people are on here in September, wanking on about “cosy evenings and wearing boots” 🤪

Not everyone can "crack the fuck on". It makes life extra difficult for some people.

Same here, I swear it's rained nearly every day so far this year where I live. I'm utterly fed up with it.
I know it's winter but looking at Facebook memories we definitely had better weather in previous years

It most definitely has rained every day for nearly a year here, too. I know, S I walk my dog twice a day, every day. It was nice in June 23. That was it. I spend hours looking at property in France 😵‍💫

nocoolnamesleft · 24/03/2024 22:28

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:26

Like what? I don’t want to sit inside all day for weeks and weeks on end. It rained all through December. It rained all through January. It rained all through February. And now March. It’s fucking depressing. I’m not surprised so many people are vitamin D deficient when we barely go outside.

But you can't make vitamin D in the winter. The sun doesn't get high enough in the sky, in the middle of the day, for the right wavelength of light to get through. If it rains all summer then you may have a point.

Zone2NorthLondon · 24/03/2024 22:28

how do you all cope then, the sensitive aquaphobes. Broken and unable to picnic
lacking the ability to push a pram and hold a brolly. Lashed & sodden. Unable to crack on. Incandescent at the mere mention of cracking on
