Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

I totally get what you’re saying.

I enjoy winter so generally dont ever complain (love chilly walks, staying cosy, all the lovely winter things), but it has been a particularly rainy one this year, i’ve allowed myself the odd whinge from time to time! If you work all week, the last thing you want to do at the weekend is spend it drenched, dragging soggy muddy kids on a rainy walk. No one has seen the sun in months, everyone’s feeling drained and overdue a few sunny days.

I agree aswell that it often feels like every sunny day happens mid week and there’s not many working parents with young children who can enjoy it in the middle of the week (although not getting soaked on the school run is a treat these days!).

The best advice I would say is get ready the night before as if you are going out early on a walk (pack anything you need). If you have even a couple of hours of decent weather, just go for it. Try and plan a walk near somewhere with cafes too, so you know you can go to for a hot chocolate if the weather turns. There are weather apps on your phone that can give you a pretty accurate picture of when its likely to rain.

Pinkelephant66 · 24/03/2024 22:08

I agree with you! I could have written ever part of your post. It’s now spring and I’m hoping for some drier weather!

LuluBlakey1 · 24/03/2024 22:09

Which area do you live in?

Probably Wales.

lol. Or Scotland, ireland

It's like saying you’d get fed up with a clear, sunny day every week for months on end.

On clear sunny days I don't need to go anywhere. I spend them in my garden just enjoying it.

I haven't set foot in my garden for months because it's like a mud bath.

Same here. I love the simple pleasures, CHEAP pleasures a warm, sunny day brings.

Are some people not understanding the costs involved of ‘having a nice hot shower to warm up’, (the children too, and the dog/s). Drying out all the damp clothes and towels.

But then many are flippantly advising the OP emigrates, magically with money from the very wet magic tree,

Probably Wales.

I could well believe that to be fair. I visit Cardiff quite often and genuinely don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a blue sky there, it’s very depressing

👍 absolutely.

Zone2NorthLondon · 24/03/2024 22:12

I just can’t get all this catastrophising, it’s rain, not like it’s a surprise in uk
coach loads of posters immobilised & miserable, near break point
boo fucking hoo

Caterguin · 24/03/2024 22:12

I live in Wales. It's like having our own special cloud.

I'm the one in our house who gets everyone out in all weathers. The only fun bit about a rainy day on the beach, where the wind flays the skin off your face, is retreating to the arcades for some warmth. The dc know there's no point in complaining.

We’re in NI. Lots of gorgeous bright, blue and sunny skies recently.

Busby88 · 24/03/2024 22:13

@EatCrow Yeah be fair I’ve never thought about the cost of a shower so I’m very lucky in that regard. But we will usually go out for a walk before showering so it’s not as if we are having two in a day. Don’t get me wrong I would take a hot summers day over a rainy one any day but it’s genuinely not made us change our plans once this winter. Maybe because we have dogs though we are more used to it, it is just part and parcel of being a dog owner.

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 24/03/2024 20:20

Oh do fuck off, we’ve had record levels of rain for these early months, the river levels are peak.

We’re farmers so it’s a bit more serious than another rainy Saturday, we’re three weeks behind spring drilling and not much got drilled in the autumn because it has pissed it down since October.

If we don’t plant soon, we won’t get a spring crop in. There will be a huge knock on for consumers because commodities will hit livestock enterprises massively and this will be passed on. I’ve never seen so much land uncultivated at this point during spring, it’s a massive talking point in the industry.

Thankfully we all have waterproofs so it hasn’t wrecked our social lives, your kids will not melt but the agricultural sector might well face serious damage.

Sending solidarity. Farmers here too but sheep so not quite as bad as the situation you're facing now, although next year will be interesting as the lack of crop filters down the system. Still absolutely sick of the relentless rain, can't move, everything's caked in mud and takes twice as long, the house stinks of wet silage and we're running out of lambing pens as there's no decent dry spell to turn them out. Oh and the thieving little so and so's took at advantage of one of the many stormy nights and nicked the quad bike, just to enhance my mood 😡

Busby88 · 24/03/2024 22:14

Our last holiday was in wales a few weeks ago, it rained most days but we still made it to the beach every day and had at least three lunches outside.

Velvian · 24/03/2024 22:14

I'm not going to say no such as bad weather, but I will say, going out in bad weather makes coming home really good.

A baseball cap under your hood makes quite a difference at keeping your face dry and your hood up. Good comfy wellies too. My Joules ones have been really good.

Busby88 · 24/03/2024 22:15

@eatsleepfarmrepeat Massive sympathies to you, that sounds so tough. I think that’s very different to social plans changing because of the weather. Really
hope things improve for you and all farmers soon.

Caterguin · 24/03/2024 22:15

I blame my parents. If they'd had more about them, they should have moved to a hot country. I was not made for this weather.

Yes I was in newry recently it was crisp cold and bright
but Christ, it’s not a lie to say it fair rains too In Ireland

MaloneMeadow · 24/03/2024 22:07

As someone who has lived in one of those hot, sunny places it is. The locals rejoice at the novelty of a bit of rain and literally get excited over getting to use their coats and boots

I’m sure I would too, if I lived in a warm, sunny country.

No, of course not but it also hasn’t been constantly raining as your post suggested.

LuckySantangelo35 · 24/03/2024 22:17

BobbyBiscuits · 24/03/2024 19:24

It's meant to rain a lot during this time of year. You know, to help nature rejuvenate. Haha.
I guess use one of those hats with an umbrella that sticks out the top?

@BobbyBiscuits

i don’t think it is meant to rain this much. Haha

liveforsummer · 24/03/2024 22:17

Also - people can piss off with their 'no such thing as bad weather'. We have all the clothes you could ever need for rain and cold but you've got to get it all off at the car, soaking and muddy and in our case smelly and covered in hay thats sticks nicely to waterproof fabric when wet. Stuff it all in the boot along with filthy wellies then somehow try and get it dry for the next morning. I lived in Cyprus for 10 years and when I moved back the first 3 winters I was thinking how this wasn't so bad at all. Had great fun during beast from the east as outside of that a decent year. Last year wasn't great but this year was certainly sent to test anyone who actually has to be outside for any significant time on a daily basis

Barney16 · 24/03/2024 22:19

You aren't being unreasonable it's absolutely miserable. My kids are grown up but must be a nightmare with tinies in this weather. I never really liked outside overly so did loads of inside things with mine when they were small. We often had a car picnic. They loved it, talk about it still. Wander round the library (loads of free stuff in libraries) then to Costa. Swimming, soft play etc.

LuckySantangelo35 · 24/03/2024 22:20

MaloneMeadow · 24/03/2024 19:26

There is an old saying along the lines of bad weather doesn’t exist - just bad clothing choices, which to some extent I do believe. Wrapped up in good waterproofs and wellies you can do anything

Edited

@MaloneMeadow

urgh no who wants to traipse around in welly’s and waterproofs

Well in fairness, I didn’t say it had rained for months. I agreed with a jovial observation about places it rains a lot, which includes Ireland & Scotland. Which will surprise no one

Im now in London which has a great climate, I don’t think it rains a lot here at all. Guess its all relative to what you are used to
