Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

I am 100% with you OP. I can't cope with it anymore. It's not even the incessant rain, it is the bloody awful grey. Depressing, dull, grey skies most of the time, flooded roads and boggy gardens/parks.
I am definitely in the wrong country. I think I would be so much happier somewhere Mediterranean! There is just nothing I fnd pleasant about living here anymore.

IncyWincyEyeroll · 24/03/2024 22:00

Am I living in a different London? That's two posters now who've said it's not been too bad here. It's been raining since about August! If it's been worse in other places, than I'm praying for the other places.

Totally with you OP. Of course you "crack on" with life, but god everything's a lot more pleasant without cold water being sharply whipped into your face by the wind while your body sweats inside a waterproof coat

liveforsummer · 24/03/2024 22:01

YANBU. We have horses (have ridden since I was a young child) and I was chatting to DD's instructor today who has had horses for about the last 45 years and is a high level competitive rider. She said today she has NEVER experienced a winter like this and for the first time ever has considered giving up entirely with the relentlessness of it all. Friday and Saturday we were chilled to the bone with high winds blowing horizontal rain and sleet. One day of respite today as a little spring teaser then the next 2 weeks forecast to be cold, windy and wet - right through Easter break. Definitely had enough!

@Yourethebeerthief Yes it has been a wet winter but today on the west coast of Scotland it has been dry and bright and sunny, with blue skies and only a few wispy clouds. Have just been outside and it's shining moonlight and very clear skies so would not at all be surprised if we woke up to a heavy white frost and ice on puddles etc tomorrow.

@GoodnightAdeline lovely views all the past week, even if also heavy showers at times. Today, the light on the forest trees was magical. Got very wet on a walk yesterday, but it was only a shower. I left home in the dry and by the time I got home again it was dry also. As others have said, if proper clothing then rain is no barrier to being out and about.
Surely, even in past childhhods, no-one expected picnics on the beach in March, or open air swimming and paddling then? Perhaps a picnic round a camp fire, though those are of course strongly discouraged now, because of wildfires/environmental damage.

I think wanting to see some blue sky rather than gun metal grey isn’t a stretch and all the posters unhappy with it is due to the sheer relentless rain. For months.

Some of them are bordering on psychotic. ☺️

Some of us just don’t let a bit of rain keep up cooped up in our houses for months on end. If there’s a way to make yourself psychotic and miserable then that’s one of them

Trulyme · 24/03/2024 22:02

I love a rainy day!

We used to put out wellies and waterproofs on and go for a walk to splash in puddles and get soaked. We’d then go home, have a warm shower and put our PJs on early.
Then we’d get a comfy throw, put on a DVD and eats snacks without feeling guilty

Yes great as a one off. Im guessing the novelty might wear off doing it every weekend for months on end.

No it doesn’t as you go to different places each time.
Its like saying you’d get fed up with a clear, sunny day every week for months on end.

But you could always mix it up with indoor activities too so it doesn’t get as boring.

It’s really not the same at all.

Facelikearedrooster · 24/03/2024 22:04

Well no, to pp it’s not supposed to rain all winter, this has been too wet and warm.

I would still try and get out in waterproofs op, but I know what you mean it gets to a point where you want blue sky and sun. It’s very common. If you can get out in waterproofs, the endorphins from exercise will give a little boost, all the best. Ps also don’t forget vitamin d if applicable.

FeelingSoOverwhelmed · 24/03/2024 22:05

Yanbu. I think all the posters going on about "cracking on" with waterproofs and umbrellas have never encountered the wind in the East coast of Scotland 🤣
Grew up in Spain, lived most of my life in Scotland now and I don't think I'll ever get used to the terrible weather here. And I do sympathise with you finding it hard to entertain kids. It is much cheaper when you can pack a picnic and go out to the park and buy some ice creams. Standing around a freezing cold play park or beach with a flask of tea is clearly not the same...

tangledupp · 24/03/2024 22:05

I actually agree, I feel like it always rains or is windy when I have a day off! On Friday the weather was beautiful here and I wanted to go for a walk around the shops, but no, had work to do. Saturday I was free and there was heavy rain with 30mph gusts of wind. When I go out I like to make the most of it and wear my best clothes, sit outside, walk around etc. I don't enjoy shopping when I'm popping an umbrella up and down every 5 mins, walking through puddles, got rain on my glasses etc. Hopefully it'll brighten up soon, though then it'll be time for the annual crazy heatwave 😩

North London here! I don’t think it’s been that bad here.

Busby88 · 24/03/2024 22:05

YABU. We’ve had loads of picnics so far this year. We have dogs so we get out every day for a walk rain or shine. My eldest DS LOVES puddles, the muddier the better. Clothes and children wash. Also nothing better after a nice walk in the rain than getting cosy inside with a film and hot chocolate.

May I ask what’s in your hot chocolate please?

It's like saying you’d get fed up with a clear, sunny day every week for months on end.

On clear sunny days I don't need to go anywhere. I spend them in my garden just enjoying it.

I haven't set foot in my garden for months because it's like a mud bath.

Today, yes. Have you looked at the forecast ahead? This long wet winter is definitely affecting my mood this year. I crave more days like today. Cannot wait for more sun.

tillytown · 24/03/2024 22:06

Do people really cancel plans because its raining? I've never known anyone do that unless there was a flood. Surely you just put on a waterproof coat and go have fun, you're not going to melt if you get wet so why stay indoors?

bringmorewashing · 24/03/2024 22:07

I always wonder where people live when they insist you just need some waterproofs and wellies and you're all set. That's fine for jumping in puddles in a spring shower perhaps, but where I'm from in NW England no amount of gear can make traipsing about in the rain enjoyable. And I quite like rain, sometimes. Just not months and months of it.

It's the sheer amount of it, and the fact that it usually comes with a biting wind blowing the rain sideways into your face or up your trouser legs. The damp chills you to your bones no matter how many waterproof layers you put on.

Like OP I want the sun on my face occasionally. I moved abroad. I'm not sure there's another solution. But YANBU and it really is grim at this time of year especially!

Itiswhysofew · 24/03/2024 22:07

YNBU

I grew up in a rainy, grey sky country. I now live in a different rainy, grey sky country. The rain here is relentless. Even on a rare sunny day, the rain appears. It's bloody awful. It stops you from doing activities and can seriously affect your psyche, if you let it.

I've also lived in warm & sunny climates, with gorgeous blue skies, and what a difference it makes to the soul. The first time I experienced this new way of living, I felt really sad that I'd spent my whole childhood, as millions of us do, existing in all that greyness.

I totally understand, OP.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 24/03/2024 22:07

It feels a bit worse than usual. We're also all sick of the wet and cold, and limping through the last weeks, hopefully 🙏

EatCrow · 24/03/2024 22:04

It’s really not the same at all.

As someone who has lived in one of those hot, sunny places it is. The locals rejoice at the novelty of a bit of rain and literally get excited over getting to use their coats and boots

HanaJane · 24/03/2024 22:08

Waterproofs....kids don't care if it's wet, you live in the uk you can't cancel plans because of rain!

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 24/03/2024 19:30

Where do you live that you feel it's rained non stop for months?

Probably Wales.

NC03 · 24/03/2024 22:08

Also glasses. Nothing worse than rain and glasses Angry they're either covered in rain or steaming up
