Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

I agree OP. All the people on here who love the constant rain, cold and wind are clearly made of sterner stuff. As much as I can and do go out with the dog and child in the rain, some of the spark is taken out of it when I then have to spend the following hours or so brushing and cleaning mud off of them and/or the buggy and/or the living room floor.

I can’t wait for better weather as my mood drastically changes once there’s a bit of sun. Plus I get up very early for work and it’s quite soul-destroying when my alarm goes off and it’s still pitch black outside.

The weather forecasters haven’t had that problem- rain, rain and more rain.

Lol

Canceling plans because of the weather? Are you mad? There is a million things to do that do not require good weather

Trulyme · 24/03/2024 21:46

I love a rainy day!

We used to put out wellies and waterproofs on and go for a walk to splash in puddles and get soaked.

We’d then go home, have a warm shower and put our PJs on early.
Then we’d get a comfy throw, put on a DVD and eats snacks without feeling guilty.

My DD is a teen now and is too worried about messing up her hair and make up to go splashing around in the rain.

I too am looking forward to the sun but you’ve got to make the most of whatever the weather is.

The poster means that it’s hard to predict spring weather year on year, some springs are glorious others not so much. Use your common sense.

Where are you in the country? Its been lovely today. I went for a run and did some work at the allotment.

this year. what I am saying is some years we have had snow we have had sunshine we have had rain. its quite common for this time of year to have unpredictable weather

paddyclampofthethirdkind · 24/03/2024 21:48

Some parts of the UK have it much worse than others when it comes to rain. You often find that a dry winter / early spring means a wetter summer and vice versa so fingers crossed!

Caterguin · 24/03/2024 21:49

Unpredictable weather is fine. Annoying, but fine. This is just.... rain. Even if it starts off nice, it ends up with rain. Every day, rain. Luckily, I don't have to entertain the dc anymore, but there's a garden out there that needs sorting out. And I'll run in all weather, but I am craving some sun on my skin.

I’ve got plenty thanks. My post was perfectly reasonable. Get over it.

Yes great as a one off. Im guessing the novelty might wear off doing it every weekend for months on end.

sweetpeaorchestra · 24/03/2024 21:50

We had about 3 weeks of dry weather last spring/summer and it then rained end of June, all of July and August (NW England). It’s gone on to rain every day since November as far as I can tell, bar the odd day.

i completely agree OP, bollocks to the “right clothes”, it’s the endless grey, wind and mud. I feel reborn today as we had a whole sunny dry day (‘a dear diary moment’) and I have achieved so much/ and been outside the majority of the time! Kids have been outdoors exercising loads and asleep earlier.

(Im applying for Irish passports for the family so we have EU ones and learning Spanish to give me hope ..)

I understood and would agree normally but the rain has been relentless for months therefore this seems so annoyingly predictable,

NameChangedForThis6 · 24/03/2024 21:51

I'm not precious about rain and don't mind it generally but I'm with you OP, it feels like we haven't had a rain-free day in about 6 months and I am well and truly bored of it. Two small DCs too, last weekend it held out long enough for them to run around in the garden and I could have cried with happiness!

(And yes I also have eco anxiety so I'm very well aware and grateful that we have water as opposed to a draught but it doesn't meant it isn't boring and shite!)

redfacebigdisgrace · 24/03/2024 21:52

I’m with you. Can’t stand it. What saves me is carefully looking the forecast and getting outside in the window where it’s not raining or even the small bit of the day it’s sunny. Also holidays, weekends away somewhere with sun (I understand not everyone can do this).

Hibye23289 · 24/03/2024 21:52

OP I am with you! Today we had blue skies, I had shorts and tshirt on. I did couch to 5k, the kids went on their scooters, they played on the park, walked the dog now I'm sorry but half of that can't be done in the rain, well it can but it's miserable! Walking and looking up to grey skies is depressing.

Octocat · 24/03/2024 21:53

I made a new garden a couple of years ago, and bought drought-friendly plants to be environmentally friendly as I wouldn’t need to water them. 🙄

Yeah and it depends how long the shower is for really. Four minutes? Total? Children included.

bringing everything down to the bare essentials. But a nice cosy throw and a hot chocolate makes it all worthwhile.

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 24/03/2024 21:55

SergeantDawkins · 24/03/2024 21:37

But that’s just spring. Every spring is like that!

Well yes but it doesn’t mean I have to enjoy it does it? I’m not going to come home after a walk around the park in the torrential rain and screaming wind and talk about how much fun I had, especially when it had been sunny and calm at the start!

Im all for puddle splashing etc (or I was when my DC were young enough for that) but it starts to wear thin by March plus here in the West of Scotland we seem to have had high winds non stop for bloody months now, or at least it feels like it. No fun at all being out when it’s windy.

Smashieandnicey · 24/03/2024 21:56

All the posters saying they "just get on with it" seem really grumpy. Must be the SAD kicking in from months of endless rain.

TheBottomsOfMyTrousersAreRolled · 24/03/2024 21:57

It rains a lot where I live too and it gets me down at times. Not the going out, because we have waterproofs although even the dog drew the line at feb half-term’s constant rain, but drying clothes. I just want to be able to use the washing line!

id suggest moving to a dryer part of the country.

i wanted to move to australia but dh wouldnt. Not bitter…

nameXname · 24/03/2024 21:58

@Yourethebeerthief Yes it has been a wet winter but today on the west coast of Scotland it has been dry and bright and sunny, with blue skies and only a few wispy clouds. Have just been outside and it's shining moonlight and very clear skies so would not at all be surprised if we woke up to a heavy white frost and ice on puddles etc tomorrow.

@GoodnightAdeline lovely views all the past week, even if also heavy showers at times. Today, the light on the forest trees was magical. Got very wet on a walk yesterday, but it was only a shower. I left home in the dry and by the time I got home again it was dry also. As others have said, if proper clothing then rain is no barrier to being out and about.
Surely, even in past childhhods, no-one expected picnics on the beach in March, or open air swimming and paddling then? Perhaps a picnic round a camp fire, though those are of course strongly discouraged now, because of wildfires/environmental damage.

Some of them are bordering on psychotic. ☺️
