Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

Not saying I LOVE it, but yeah just get over it or move country. Two options, or…just be miserable I guess…

You don’t know the OPs situation so it’s more than likely she can’t ‘just move country’. So not two options.

MaloneMeadow · 24/03/2024 21:37

OP - judging by your comments here you have a very negative attitude anyway. I suspect that this is a big part of the problem.

TheOccupier · 24/03/2024 21:37

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 20:38

A few people have asked me where I live but what difference does it make? It’s completely irrelevant if your exact part of the country has had 14% less rain than mine or whatever. As you can see, posters from all over the country are reporting the same thing.

No they haven't. It isn't raining much in London, for example. You sound like a miserable whinger who'd be negative about anything, tbh. Move to Australia if you don't like the British weather, then you can moan about the heat instead.

I do get on with it. That's life. But I will continue complaining. As does everyone I know in real life. It's kind of a talking point given the fact that this year is the wettest yet. Only on Mumsnet do people pretend this constant rain isn't something to complain about.

March last year and the year before was filled with glorious sunny days. I have photos of lots of picnics and the kids in shorts and sun hats.

So yeh, it is fairly surprising this year.

And. It. Is. Shite.

yet March just before covid we were covered in snow with the beats from the east. March brings us all weathers

I had a huge moan to DH about this yesterday. I’m sick of fucking boots and jackets and jumpers. I went for a walk yesterday when waiting for DD who was at an activity, there is a lovely park just next door and the sun was out so I thought why not get a coffee and have a walk. By the time I was half way round it was pissing it down and so windy that it was blowing full on in my face, the wind was so loud I couldn’t hear my podcast on my earbuds and my hood could hardly stay up. Then I get home and have to put the lights on at bloody 1pm because it was so dark due to the rain. Thankfully it did clear up later in the day and today has been much nicer.

But that’s just spring. Every spring is like that!

NashvilleQueen · 24/03/2024 21:37

It's been on the news lots that this has been an exceptionally wet few weeks so you're not imagining it. And I hate it too.

Yes you can dress up in waterproofs etc but it would just be nice to have some bright spring days. Our climate as become warmer and wetter and it's miserable.

I'm all for the seasons. I want it to be cold in winter and can manage a rain in Autumn but I also want a decent few weeks of warm sunshine in summer and we seem not to get that which makes the wet spring even worse.

Newgirls · 24/03/2024 21:38

My tip is save any holiday budget and go away in feb half term and new year if you can afford it. Anywhere sunny. Lifesaver

Give it a few months and you will all be complaining about the heat.

The weather is a very British obsession.

Suchardchoccy · 24/03/2024 21:39

@featherlampshade I also have a 2 year old and a 1 year old and going out in the cold, wet freezing weather is NOT fun. I'm also pregnant so I'm uncomfortable in general. The only problem the warmer, sunnier weather brings is the wasps 😡

Ilovemyshed · 24/03/2024 21:39

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/03/2024 19:36

Where do you live? I grew up in Wales where it always rains and now live in north west where it also always rains, but I used to live in South of England and I noticed a huge difference, felt like it hardly ever rained there. So maybe move further south if you can’t stand the rain - according to google East Anglia is the driest part of the UK.

It is. Already cut my grass four times this year :)

swayingpalmtree · 24/03/2024 21:40

Yeah coz it's just so easy to emmigrate to Aus isnt it?- they hand out visas like smarties! what a stupid comment

MaloneMeadow · 24/03/2024 21:40

Wexone · 24/03/2024 21:36

oh you sound like my mother. you can't control the weather so don't let it control you. as someone said no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing. i live by the beach and getbout lost days just wrap up proper it doesn't control how my day to day is. yes it's a bit miserable sometimes but you can't let it get to you. my birthday is around this time and my mother says it' could be snowing raining or sun splitting the skies. its march we can get all weather's. nicer weather comes around easter and after

Yep.. I have an early April baby. Birthdays have ranged from glorious sun splitting the skies to full on blizzards. This time of year is known for unpredictable and often extreme weather

NashvilleQueen · 24/03/2024 21:40

I also think that some people (and I am one) who really struggle emotionally with the weather. It's irrational and out of my control but that doesn't change my mood when it's raining day after day after day (in the north west)

EatCrow · 24/03/2024 21:40

😁 Seriously, just dig out that money you’ve been saving for a rainy day and emigrate. Everyone knows how easy it is.

Crazycatlady79 · 24/03/2024 21:40

Well, you've got options?

  • Stay at home with your children every time that it rains, raising unhealthily sedantry, aquahobic hermits.
  • Realise that it's perfectly possible to hold an umbrella and push a pram like the rest of us
  • Emigrate
  • Buy an annual membership to a local soft play and endure an entirely different brand of misery and moaning
  • Or, you could take small, soggy steps towards embracing an happy medium?!
SuitcaseBursting · 24/03/2024 21:41

My two most hated sayings:

‘He is just being friendly’ when a dog jumps up at you.

‘No such thing as bad weather. Only bad choice of clothing’ when you dare to complain about the rain.

OP it’s not been too bad in London. Come down here.

EatCrow · 24/03/2024 21:41

Ilovemyshed · 24/03/2024 21:39

I’m bemused. May I ask why?

Anxiouslump · 24/03/2024 21:41

Well I’ll hold my hand up and say I like rain. My weather hierarchy goes like this:

Sun
Snow
Rain
Hail
Dry and grey
Wind
Over-hot and sticky

yeah my husbands birthday is mid April.. we celebrated his 40th with a garden party it was so hot everyone stayed outside. it was unreal. you can't predict weather this time of year at all

purplehotdogs · 24/03/2024 21:42

I am totally fed up of the rain. I am tired of having to trudge and slip through tons of mud when I walk the dogs. I am tired of being wet and cold and the dogs always having muddy paws and having to constantly be washing the towles I use to clean the dogs after a muddy walk plus give them baths when they're really filthy. I also just want to get out to my allotment and potter but IT'S TOO WET. This rainy winter has sucked so much. Literally. I almost lost a boot twice on one walk where the mud tried to take it.

But while I wait for dryer days, I make sure to get out when the weather is even a tiny bit nice, like this weekend. I just go out with a loose plan, eg a walk or place to visit, a scenic drive if the weather really takes a turn, an idea for a nice cafe or something likewise. A change of scenery is so important, and I don't always get it but I am tired of being indoors and want to make the most of any halfway decent days, especially now the light is lasting longer. There is a fair amount of gritting your teeth and accepting it won't always work out but we have to work with what we've got. Or move to Florida, I guess.

KvotheTheBloodless · 24/03/2024 21:43

YANBU to dislike rain, but c'mon, unless you live in Fort William it's not that bad. The climate in the UK means we get plenty of rain, but it's very changeable. I live in a particularly wet part of the UK but don't think it's been that bad - nearly all days have a dry point, and Spring is here now.

You'll start feeling better soon (DH has SAD and is already on the mend).

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/03/2024 20:06

@GoodnightAdeline

Can’t hold an umbrella and push the pram

You can still wear a raincoat though, or poncho.

😳

A wide brimmed Aussie hat is my lifesaver and it looks good with Barbour and wellies too

The weather forecasters haven’t had that problem- rain, rain and more rain.
