Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

1000 replies

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

It's meant to rain a lot during this time of year. You know, to help nature rejuvenate. Haha.
I guess use one of those hats with an umbrella that sticks out the top?

Rosesanddaisies1 · 24/03/2024 19:24

What plans are you cancelling? Maybe make rain proof plans during the winter?

MaloneMeadow · 24/03/2024 19:26

There is an old saying along the lines of bad weather doesn’t exist - just bad clothing choices, which to some extent I do believe. Wrapped up in good waterproofs and wellies you can do anything

Like what? I don’t want to sit inside all day for weeks and weeks on end. It rained all through December. It rained all through January. It rained all through February. And now March. It’s fucking depressing. I’m not surprised so many people are vitamin D deficient when we barely go outside.

I want to enjoy being outside. I want to have picnics, long walks, go to the park, all without getting absolutely drenched and covered in mud and having to strip off the second I get home. So yes bad weather does exist.

It rarely rains all day. Today has been beautiful. Can't you go out anyway even if it is not dry all day? The kids probably won't mind so long as it isn't torrential rain. It has been a wet winter though. I am a hiker and the mud is like treacle on the coast path and footpaths over fields. We still walk though and usually the rain holds off except for the odd shower.

fungipie · 24/03/2024 19:28

I go out for a country or wood walk with my dog, come rain or shine. Just dress appropiately, and just go and enjoy.

Daffodilsarentfluffy · 24/03/2024 19:28

Toddler ds's best days were feeding ducks in the rain.. Never the wrong weather.. Just the wrong clothes.. Flasks and cakes.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 24/03/2024 19:30

Where do you live that you feel it's rained non stop for months?

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:30

But I don’t enjoy the rain. It’s cold. The view is grey and bleak. I want to feel the sun on my skin, see the lovely view, stop for a picnic and just soak up the vitamin D. If that makes me some kind of weirdo then so be it.

The UK is a temperate rain forest, we just happen to have cut most of it down.

You need raincoats and wellies. Keep a few towels by the front door and learn to enjoy hot chocolate while huddling under a blanket with your DC.

I manage to walk the dog and deal with DD’s pony in all weathers. To some extent you are being unreasonable about this - there is no reason that you can’t go outside in it with appropriate clothing on

Be realistic - you live in the UK. Picnics do not exist outside of the summer months and never have

Yourethebeerthief · 24/03/2024 19:30

I agree OP. The rain is starting to really affect my mood. West coast of Scotland it is raining constantly. I know it was different the past few years because of my Facebook memories. This is a particularly bad year.

We do get out in all weather but it is still affecting my mood terribly. Add the constant viruses into the mix and I'm done. The occasional sunny day comes along and I get fooled into spring cheer. Then the forecast for another week of nothing but rain brings me crashing back to earth.

Did you previously live somewhere you could do those things all year round? If not, I don’t get this post. We have seasons. Plan your life (and dress) accordingly and get on with it.

Cottoncandyflavaflav · 24/03/2024 19:31

We're outside all the time. We wear coats. It rains quite often but rarely all day. There is plenty of dry weather in-between showers and downpours if you don't want to get your coat wet. Don't wait for a sunny day to enjoy being out and about or you'll miss out.

But yes, I'm looking forward to a bit of sunshine and warmth coming soon.

You’re in the wrong country. I’m south american but around the 10th year here I just accepted I’d always be soggy and frizzy

bradpittsbathwater · 24/03/2024 19:32

Where do you live that it's rained all day every day for a month? We did get caught in hail yesterday but it had been quite nice all day before that. Same as today. Nice and sunny all day. It did get a little chilly but so what.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 24/03/2024 19:32

OP you aren’t going mad….it does rain more than it used to. Climate change doesn’t automatically mean it’s getting warmer!

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 24/03/2024 19:32

No such thing as bad weather. Only bad choice of clothing.

Waterproofs and wellies on and out to stomp op.

We go to the woods and make dens

We go for a walk to feed the ducks

We go for bike rides and plan to come back as muddy as possible lol

We go for a walk to lidl, pick up lunch from the bakery and sit by the canal to eat it with brollies and waterproofs on.

We go on scavenger hunts

We go out and measure things (yes random I know but for some reason they think it's hilarious 😂)

We take our walkie talkies and play hide and seek in the woods.

We put the tent up in the garden and fill it with warm blankets and cushions and:

We play card games

We do jigsaws

We have movie afternoons

We do campfire cooking

We do wood craft

You live in the wrong country for that. Everyone would like a bit more sun and warmth but this is the UK - manage your expectations

Woodcraft? Where do you live, a remote part of Canada?

Invest in some proper waterproofs for everyone. I usually go for Swedish brands like Didriksons and Villervalla. Not cheap but the Swedes know how to dress for wet and cold weather. Buy second hand for the kids. You'll find buy/sell Facebook pages for specific brands like these.

tinks3110 · 24/03/2024 19:34

as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable
clothing. Get out there, teach your kids that there’s fun to be had in all weathers
