Waitrose Easter Eggs

AIBU in expecting to pay £11 for these Easter eggs in my local store in Stratford upon Avon? According to the manager and supervisor I am being not only unreasonable but proper stupid because I didn’t read the small print which says the price depends on the weight. The eggs on the display are the extra big ones and cost £15. Silly me! I gave them back their eggs together with quite a large piece of my mind which may result in me being banned in future. But honestly, isn’t it a gigantic con?

YABU. Nobody was forcing you to buy them.

Commodities in shops vary in price and Waitrose is a more expensive supermarket. Go to a cheaper one.

StrawberryThief1930 · 23/03/2024 17:35

madness. clearly they are £11.

Did you even look at the photo?

MiltonNorthern · 23/03/2024 17:36

Why do they have a price ticket corresponding to a different size of egg on that display then? Did they have an answer?

Apologies - I completely misunderstood!

I think someone made a mistake and instead of being polite about it and changing the sign they've decided to make you feel wrong instead.

So if you saw those eggs with the £11 notice, you wouldn't think they cost £11? Or did you not bother to read the OP. OP, YANBU

Deliadidit · 23/03/2024 17:40

It is a con and very underhand!

LaurieFairyCake · 23/03/2024 17:42

Yer what Confused

Chocolate eggs already made and in a box are not sold by WEIGHT

That's just a con !

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/03/2024 17:42

Shelf prices are so often wrong.

But the law is an ass here. Consumer protection law says they are making a misleading price indication which is an unfair commercial practice.

But contract law says they can refuse to sell you the item at the marked price.

NuffSaidSam · 23/03/2024 17:43

I've just had the same issue in Morrisons, but they did honour the price on the label in the end.

I would have expected them to give you them for £11.

Hoglet70 · 23/03/2024 17:44

That pricing is ridiculously misleading. I would contact Trading Standards and moan. You have photographic evidence.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 23/03/2024 17:47

‘When they go low, we go high’ as the Chairperson of JLP says when criticised - more true than she intended….

IsthisthereallifeIsthisjustfantasy · 23/03/2024 19:31

That's ridiculous.

Cotswoldmum70 · 24/03/2024 18:05

Thank you all for your positive affirmations! I’ve emailed the entire board at JLP and called them out on their unethical pricing practices. Watch this space and I’ll update post with their response. BTW new chief exec is Nish Kankiwala and his email address is [email protected] should you have any future beefs.

Can you not read? Says Lindor easter eggs £11.

Any normal consumer would assume that. I was made to feel like a fool because I didn’t read the small print. The store manager robustly defended the store’s pricing policy and said it was perfectly legal. No apology and no offer to reimburse the difference. Big up to Morrisons for doing the right thing.

I didn’t have my digital scales to hand and honestly have no idea how much an Easter egg weighs. Again pretty sure that my experience is fairly representative of the average consumer, honestly who could tell the difference? And what about vulnerable or partially sighted shoppers? Shouldn’t their needs be taken into account or do we just let them be scammed?

That is my point- which I tried to make to the store manager. The entire display was made up of the larger eggs - see photo - so how on earth can they justify this marketing strategy. Falls into the category of unethical pricing practices.

Yes it is a disgrace. I couldn’t care less about the eggs in all honesty- my kids are in their 30s so really won’t miss them, but I’m furious at the way retailers position themselves as pillars of the community and virtue signal as if their life depended on it, then deliberately set out to mislead and rob us blind.

All supermarkets do this now - entire displays with one product, always higher priced than the mysterious missing product that they say is a bargain. Check your receipts carefully, people. I've had to argue the toss loads of times.

HauntedBungalow · 24/03/2024 18:44

And yeah Morrisons will refund you. Waitrose too have refunded me before - but in cash 🤨

Still an imperfect solution. You shouldn't have to go to customer services just to pay the price they've misled you to believe you will pay - because if I see a display full of a particular product, and no other products on that display, and that display has six massive whacking great "BARGAIN HERE £5" tickets on it then yes I will expect to pay £5 for the product.

If you get a free Easter egg can you do a prize draw?
