Waitrose Easter Eggs

AIBU in expecting to pay £11 for these Easter eggs in my local store in Stratford upon Avon? According to the manager and supervisor I am being not only unreasonable but proper stupid because I didn’t read the small print which says the price depends on the weight. The eggs on the display are the extra big ones and cost £15. Silly me! I gave them back their eggs together with quite a large piece of my mind which may result in me being banned in future. But honestly, isn’t it a gigantic con?

I very much doubt that this is a policy decision. It'll be an error by a minimum waged shelf stacker.

I agree that the decent thing would have been for them to let you have the item at the shelf price. But this really isn't the end of the world.

Are you on the board?

Am outraged on your behalf as had a nearly similar experience in my own local Waitrose today either the same eggs but different strategy. They'd mixed the larger and smaller eggs together but only listed the £11 price.

I was so annoyed at myself that the entire two bags of shopping cost £110 when I could have probs got exactly the same food at Lidl around the corner for £40. I had a low blood sugared tetchy teen with me but if I hadn't I'd have refused to pay and left the lot.

Never going there again (apart from the v bouji treats I can't face living without). Am voting with my feet on their prices & unethical Easter egg strategy!

Blueberrycreampie · 24/03/2024 20:13

So there was a large display of Easter eggs with a large sign in front with the price, only that wasn't the price? I'll be looking out for this in my Waitrose and will have words if it's the same!

RotundCheese · 24/03/2024 20:16

Go get them, OP! Don't let the bastards win!!

Hearing you loud and clear. Not sure which planet Saraclara lives on, but she’s an outlier on this thread.

It's not great but deary me OP you must really have crossed a line to get banned from the store. Harassing the shop employees to the point of them banning you isn't on no matter if they were wrong or not. You'll not get your case heard that way.

I didn’t say I was banned - just a little bit of a nuisance because I challenged their dubious pricing strategy. I’m allowed some creative licence. I didn’t harass anybody. If no one challenges these practices then consumers will continue to be tricked into paying more than they intended. Are you ok with this?

Obviously I'm not in the board but I agree with @saraclara , most likely to be a mistake by an employee compoinded by the stupidity of a second employee but I very much doubt the diretors spend their board meetings coming up with ways to con their customers

Id be annoyed if I was disappointed at the tilll too and also probably would have spoken to a staff member about it but you're taking it too far, it's daft to think the board of a major retailer gets involved in price labels and displays of Easter eggs. Do you really think theres an agenda item for ways to mislead customers hoping no one will notice?

I do think that the board have a responsibility towards their customers. And set the moral and ethical guidelines within a corporation. And have a responsibility to ensure the protection of vulnerable customers. And actually should be aware of a pile of Easter eggs in a small store, duping loyal customers. I’m sharing my thoughts on mumsnet, not petitioning the European Court of Human Rights, so no I don’t think I’m taking this too far.

@HauntedBungalow I was gonna come on here to say about Boots too.
Although the other day they had offer on. I DID read small print so got the right size but the til would not give me the correct price. Went back to check and brought ticket to show guy who was supervising DIY tills. He said yeah that happens sometimes and he couldn't change it.
Guess who went to Superdrug where they had cheaper prices and someone serving on the till who gave me the correct price.
The OP - that clearly is misleading advertising - make all the fuss you like 👏👏

sassyduck · 24/03/2024 21:21

CammyChameleon · 24/03/2024 21:23

This sort of mistake happens all the time, so I try to always check the weight/description on the display Vs the product.

Sometimes shelf fillers feel pressure to get displays filled up quickly or have a daft moment or half-arse things.

The staff member who had to deal with the mistake should be used to correcting this sort of thing all the time though, staff always end up having to figure out whether an offer isn't working on the tills, a shelf-filler has botched the display, or the display is fine but the customer has picked up the wrong sized product from elsewhere anyway.

Marchintospring · 24/03/2024 21:25

In fairness to the shelf stacker both the £11 eggs and £15 ones look exactly the same. One has truffles and one has mini eggs but there’s no huge difference in either size or packaging.

I hate the way all eggs are so uninspired these days. There’s so little choice. They used to be beautiful and you’d certainly know if you’d been given the small, meduim or large variety.

hobbitonthehill · 24/03/2024 18:59

Dear god I've delt with so many customers like you today 😳 its utterly exhausting lol

customers who are outraged and are calling out underhand, deceiving and unethical business practices. Good! I was worried we’d all started to just accept it but it’s good to hear you’re seeing a pattern of people calling it out.

saraclara · 24/03/2024 21:28

Seriously, it's so much more likely just to be a cock up. If board members and managers were deliberately telling their staff to do this, a disgruntled employee would have spilled the beans long ago.

Shelf fillers and label attachers are working for a pittance through the night, under pressure, and probably not exactly loaded with academic qualifications or love for their work. They're even less likely to check the weight of an Easter egg than OP.

And if you think that board members are checking their own emails and reading ranty complaints about an Easter egg display, you're going to be sadly disappointed.

Well you are so wrong. I emailed the CEO today and have already had a response to
my message from a case manager in the Executive Office of JLP. So not only does Mr Kankiwala read his emails on a Sunday afternoon, he takes action and passes it to one of his case managers. So maybe you don’t know as much as you think you do.

Quite possibly not. I complained to the Waitrose CEO a while ago and got a response apologising and sending me a £20 voucher. There was also a commitment to staff training in that branch.

Saraclara must have skin in the game. Fair
point about the shelf stackers but this was not a mistake. Store manager was absolutely upfront about the policy and I bet that display is still in store.
