Waitrose Easter Eggs

AIBU in expecting to pay £11 for these Easter eggs in my local store in Stratford upon Avon? According to the manager and supervisor I am being not only unreasonable but proper stupid because I didn’t read the small print which says the price depends on the weight. The eggs on the display are the extra big ones and cost £15. Silly me! I gave them back their eggs together with quite a large piece of my mind which may result in me being banned in future. But honestly, isn’t it a gigantic con?

All supermarkets do this now - entire displays with one product, always higher priced than the mysterious missing product that they say is a bargain. Check your receipts carefully, people. I've had to argue the toss loads of times.

Yes clearly. I never usually take the till reciepts but even I can do the mental arithmetic 3 x 11 = 33, so when I was charged £45 I asked for the receipt and saw the real purchase price. How on earth are they getting away with it? I’m so sick of all the warm fuzzy ad campaigns, with hard up young families enjoying delicious healthy meals at fair prices. What an absolute travesty, all they are focusing on are ways to mislead us.

I will be going to Morrisons tomorrow.

Those eggs are a tenner in Sainsburys with Nectar prices. I know this because I urgently needed to buy myself three.

No, she went to Waitrose and argued with them because of their misleading prices. The same principle would apply at a lower price point.

Caravaggiouch · 24/03/2024 18:49

It’s not great, seems like a misleading display. But you must have been a proper bellend to the staff to get banned, bloody hell!

IsthisthereallifeIsthisjustfantasy · 24/03/2024 18:46

If you get a free Easter egg can you do a prize draw?

Haha - yes. Genius idea. Although I’m not expecting any freebies. I’m going to make myself a thorough nuisance for a while though. I want to start a campaign to make this pricing policy illegal. No doubt at all that is unethical, sadly the two are not mutually exclusive.

Oh god yes the adverts are annoying. Fuck off Tesco, I'm not your fucking mate

Boots do it too. Have a shelf ticket for one size of shampoo/soap/toothpaste, put a different size of the same brand there that costs more. Then when you query it they say "oh, did you think you were buying the 300ml bottle? That's the one that costs £4. The one you've picked up is 330 ml and that costs £7". Fucking chancers.

You're not wrong, OP, that is misleading and purposely so. Why not put the £11 notice against the corresponding eggs that you can buy for that amount?

Answer is because Waitrose want you to spend more, be too embarrassed to quibble the price at checkout. I would send that photo and your complaint to your local authority's trading standards department.

They think we are all mugs. I think if more people called them out, they would be more transparent.

I wish I had a Sainsbury’s nearby. They don’t bang on about how virtuous they are but I bet they don’t rob you blind.

Like I say they do refund you if you query. It's work though and we shouldn't have to. And I also bet most people don't even notice. Do you want a receipt? No? Great, that way you're unlikely to ever think you've been ripped off.

In future when you spot it if they argue the toss, I suggest acting like you're a little bit thick and very stubborn. This is what works for me. I just say repeatedly "that was the only shampoo/block of cheese/Easter egg/extra virgin olive oil on that shelf" and they cave.

I was assertive and removed the offending price ticket. I’m not banned (yet). I spend too much money in there.

OP posts:
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/03/2024 19:04

Yeah that’s ridiculous. Clearly if there are no other eggs in the display you would assume the eggs that are £11 are the ones next to the price tag.

Also i got ones the same as that for £10 from Sainsbury’s a while back.

Jc2001 · 24/03/2024 19:04

I'd be posting that photo up on their social media pages.

SpringSprungALeak · 24/03/2024 19:04

@Cotswoldmum70

best wishes in your pursuit!!

That has to be against some trading law, surely!!

fair enough if there's a stack of varying sizes, you need to check the size & corresponding price, but in huge stacks of the same size, that's just plain wrong!!!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/03/2024 19:04

hobbitonthehill · 24/03/2024 18:59

I don't know what it is that you do for a job but on the off-chance that you do work in a supermarket that misleads customers on pricing, would you not raise this with somebody, given that you'd have dealt with disgruntled customers who were rightly ticked off having put x number of eggs in their trolley expecting to pay £11 each, only to find that your employer is covertly trying to grab a further £4 per egg?

I would. I'd be really sorry for customers being misled, sorry for myself having to apologise and make excuses for my grabby employer - and I'd be miffed at having to put all the unwanted eggs back or have them stacked around me.

We all serve somebody; might as well do it well.

Nah, they do.

Seriously, they're all at it. I don't think I've been in a single chain in the past three years that hasn't done this. A lot of people don't get receipts and even fewer check them. It's normally me and a couple of arsey pensioners arguing the toss at customer service desks. Everyone else just takes home stuff they've paid over the odds for without realising.
