To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

£100 a week is nothing if you think what it would cost to live in your own place.

It's quite a lot. Actually MORE than I paid last time I shared a house (which admittedly was a few years ago). I bet her parents are making a profit, not just covering costs with that.
She's a PAYING ADULT and should be allowed her time in the shower.

DietsAreForTheWeak · 23/03/2024 16:34

You're getting a lot of abuse for saying you take 15 minute showers.
I do the same. It's one of the few things that bring me happiness.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/03/2024 16:35

Here's a roomshare for 350 for all those people saying she wouldn't get accommodation for that price in the real world.

I think £100 a week is a lot to pay your parents, it’s a huge chunk of your salary every month so I don’t thinks it’s unreasonable you should have a 15 minute shower. It is however difficult if there’s lots of you to have a shower as the hot water will run out. So I can see both sides.

It just seems petty. The extra cost is minuscule. This seems a control issue. I had a partner like that unfortunately.

Moveoverdarlin · 23/03/2024 16:36

I don’t think you pay them a lot for what it’s worth. £100 a week? Is that all in?? Bills, food, rent, washing, council tax. In the real world you’d get F all for £400 a month.

I'm in the bathroom for 30 minutes, but I suppose only 10 of that is actually under the shower water.

I'm also happy to have a sink wash every other day, but that's my choice and whenever I pay rent, I believe I can shower when I want, within reason.

There are one bedroom flats round my way for £500 a month.

A house share is significantly cheaper than that.

PansyOatZebra · 23/03/2024 16:42

15 minutes is waaayyyy too long! I’m 5 minutes max and that includes hair wash!

£100 is nothing!!! If you don’t like the rules then move out.

FlowerBarrow · 23/03/2024 16:45

£100 a week is certainly not a huge chunk of her salary.
It’s £5200 a year out of £24000, leaving her £18800 a year for whatever she wants.
I can absolutely guarantee this will be way way more than her parents have to spend between everyone else in the household.
I really don’t think the issue is number of minutes in the shower but the entitled attitude of someone who’s 24yrs old with a £24k salary.

Wetblanket78 · 23/03/2024 16:48

I have about a fifteen minute shower about once a week when I wash my hair. I have long hair. Sometimes I go longer than a week without washing my hair. I just wash it when I think it needs it. The other days I'm only in the shower about 5 minutes.

spannered · 23/03/2024 16:26

15 minutes is not a long shower for me. It seems strange that your mum would rather your family wash with flannels every other day than get a job, but there may be more to that that you haven't explained. If I were you I'd move out.

This. I’d be saving like mad to move out too.

Exactly. OP pays £100 a week for rent and bills and food/board and lodgings. On her salary she will be picking up nearly £400 a week. So she has 75% of her salary left for herself after she has paid her mum her 'board money!' 75%!!!

Anyone who thinks the OP having 75% surplus income left, (after she has paid her mum her board money,) means she is 'hard done by,' is seriously taking the piss.

!

ButtockUp · 23/03/2024 16:55

Bless you OP .
You've fessed up and will make changes accordingly.

All good wishes to you.

Aquarelles · 23/03/2024 16:56

I just timed how long it took me to shower. 17 minutes. That was washing hair (I've been gardening today, so gave my scalp a good scrub and lather), applying conditioner and brushing it through, washing my face, rinse conditioner off, and wash my body.

I read in a lifestyle magazine years ago that you should rinse your conditioner off first then wash yourself, otherwise it causes acne on your bum and back (backne) due to conditioner being left in the pores of your skin.

YANBU, OP.

MoreCandles · 23/03/2024 16:57

If you pay 100 a week , you have more than paid to use the shower for 15 minutes

But not much else, to be fair.

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 11:05

Okay, I didn't think it was excessive but I don't know how long people take on average.

I’m sure I take that long, I have long hair and wash and condition. It takes a while to rinse it, but I don’t wash it each time.
To be honest we shower morning and night.
you aren’t being unreasonable, just try to be a bit quicker

12gum · 23/03/2024 17:03

What is the £100 getting you? If just the room then I think l that’s a lot, a 1/2 bedroom house is about £450-500 where I am per month

GuinnessBird · 23/03/2024 17:03

Even my physically disabled husband does not take 15 minutes in the shower.

You think it costs a £100 a week to shower for 15 minutes every day? Don't be so ridiculous.

mydogisthebest · 23/03/2024 17:05

XelaM · 23/03/2024 16:02

Per week.

And my parents never charged me anything, nor did any of my friends' parents. It's a very British thing to charge your own kids rent.

Of course children should be paying keep. Why on earth would their parents pay for their food, do their laundry etc for nothing if the child is working?

I paid keep as soon as I started work at 17 and so did all my friends and family. Parents that let their children live at home for free are not doing them any favours. Once they get in the real world with rent/mortgage, gas, electric, council tax, food and all the other bills they will be in a for a big shock

EllieBellieBee · 23/03/2024 17:05

I had a mother like the OPs, she chose to have more children and not work yet as soon as those old enough started working she was whinging about the cost of electric, gas etc. We all found it odd as we were out of the house more when we were working and rarely took meals at home so were using less of everything. In the end my sister and I moved into a flat and were better off having our own place than paying ££££ to our “D”M to be whined at over having a bath twice a week. Our brother moved out soon after us. Funnily enough we all went NC with her in the end.

ManonDe · 23/03/2024 17:06

15 minutes is insane. 5 minutes is ample if you wash daily which every one here does.

We have a 4 bed house and our energy bills are over 600 a month. We turned our heating and hot water off completely in October 2023 to try and deal with this. (1 electric shower so we do have hot water).

I think you should apologise to your parents and be more considerate.

SunnyDays24 · 23/03/2024 17:09

Agree with other posters . 15 minutes standing in the shower is waaay too long. We use shower timers so we stick to around 4-5 minutes each which really is plenty and ensures hot water for all.
