To be sad about what was said to me today

I have been lucky enough to get the keys for a new build from the council. It has a mix of private rent, council and home buyers. Some of the houses are still being built. Today I was waiting outside to get the keys and some builders went past in a car and said something along the lines of ‘…getting a house from the council’ and laughed really loud. I have been very lucky after fleeing DV with a 3 year old and I feel really upset and embarrassed

Honestly. You may have heard part of a convo that had zero to do with you or you may have misheard.

They may live or grew up in a council house.

I wouldn't take it to heart

OOBetty · 23/03/2024 00:12

As above poster if they are builders and the development is ongoing I would make an official complaint to the developers.
In writing, not just to the site agent as they don’t have the authority to do anything about it
Their name will be displayed at the entrance to the site or area still undergoing development.
Copy it to the council housing team
Describe the offenders if you can.

Unfortunately, in some areas, many of those lucky enough to receive housing from the council do so because they chose a lifestyle that ensured they would get a free home. I'm speak from experience of having this within my family. For this reason, there are people who resent this, especially during times like these when many are struggling and not receiving any help from the gov.

Those builders would have no idea of what you've been through personally, and I'm sure they wouldn't have said that if they did, I'm sorry to hear about how it made you feel.

Xx

Council housing isn't free FFS.working people pay rent, benefit claimants get rent paid but that amount can come down within uc depending on circumstances.

Whattodowithit88 · 23/03/2024 09:33

Understandably housing is a big issue at the moment and lots of people can’t get a house which is fine but it means they can’t provide security for their families which is a very personal and horrible thing to have to experience, never the less, he was still a wanker and to shout it out to you was disgusting and shitty behaviour that you should ignore.

Tillagirl · 23/03/2024 17:29

What idiots!? And sadly they are now living rent free in your head. Kick them out lovely they are not worth spoiling your great new life. Good luck to you, enjoy your new home. I hope it brings you peace and safety x

Any excuse to never jog again

Jessica3075 · 23/03/2024 17:38

Nothing is for free. Hold your head up girl. You’ve done well. You’re putting a roof over your family’s head. Continue to work hard and do your best.

Fuck ‘em!

Council housing isn’t free, no, but it’s heavily subsidised by the tax payer. Council rents are less than half market rate.

The amount of times I see “I pay for my council house” is unbelievable. Yes, but you pay a fraction of its market value. The people who put that argument across usually have no idea what real world rent or mortgage payments are as they’ve lived in a council property their entire life.

The equivalent mortgage on the same property would be close to three times what most people pay in council rents. A flat that rents for £350 a month from the council would cost anybody else £750 a month to rent or buy on a mortgage.

This is why council estates are now full of brand new BMWs, Mercedes A class’ and Range Rover Evoques, 55inch TV’s and crushed velvet sofas.

Mother2375 · 23/03/2024 17:48

Mate, I think all of the women know how hard it is to be a single mother. Even with my career, I would find it difficult. And all you want is a nice place to live and you don’t have to worry. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Enjoy this moment and please don’t let others ruin it for you. You need/deserve this. Big hugs x

Edited

Oh here we go with the old "it's subsidised" crap again.

My TV is 60" BTW, probs upgrading to 65" later in the year with all your lovely taxes subsidising me.

Shudahaddogs · 23/03/2024 17:56

I live in a council house. It's bloody lovely, the rent is extremely cheep..who's laughing now ?? You enjoy honey xx

ClaredeBear · 23/03/2024 17:59

Lovely news. We’ve just had some flats built done the road from us - they look great and they will be mixed tenure. It’s then, not you. Imagine what it must be like for the people who actually have to live with them. Enjoy your new home and forget about them. X x

My point exactly.

You could be putting money away to buy your own property but probably say you can’t afford to, all whilst paying £400 a month in rent and spending the money saved on luxuries.

MarvellousMonsters · 23/03/2024 18:04

I live in social housing, it's fantastic. The rent is reasonable and the property is well maintained. I consider myself very lucky to have my house, it's a long term secure tenancy and I'll never have to worry about a ton of stuff that private renters or home owners have to.

Let that ignorant dickhead laugh, you are about to start a new life in a lovely new secure home.

Your point is that its supposedly subsidised.

My council actually makes more from social housing than it spends currently so not sure how it's being subsidised.Dont let facts stand in the way of a good old froth though.

I'll definitely say I can't afford to buy a house, because I can't. I never will.

Thankfully I have a lifetime tenancy in my council house (and I only pay £380) so I don't need to. Sorry if my buying nice things sometimes pisses you off though, clearly I should be on bread and gruel and not have anything vaguely nice ever.

Wellretired · 23/03/2024 18:08

There was a time when local councils and the government were proud of providing decent housing for all, or, at least, for as many people as they could. No longer sadly and the worst thing of all is the implication that there is something wrong in getting a house allocated by the council. I grew up in a council house and I still remember being put down for it when I was a teenager. Its very human to be hurt by these kind of comments. But the important thing is that you will have a decent and safe home. Complain to the builders firm if you feel like it as they have behaved really badly but, as they say, the best revenge is living well!

Lovely17 · 23/03/2024 18:09

Silly immature boys springs to mind. Ignore them, enjoy your new home, council or not 😊 x

Just ignore and move on! I remember years ago starting jogging and obviously 🙄 van man drives past (always 'lads' in a van isn't it) and shouts speed up fatty. I stopped, cried, walked home and never jogged again. I look back at myself now and I'm annoyed at myself - people just blurt out nonsense. Our job is to take it on the chin, ignore and move on. Hold your head up high lovely and just completely ignore. If you're feeling more confident in a day or so then go to the sales office and complain- you might get some extra bits done in your house for the rudeness of these horrible builders you never know.

A few years back walking home from a friends early evening (winter so darkish) a group of young lads who were gathered on a corner started shouting abuse at me along the lines of you would be desperate to sleep with that. I was upset by the unprovoked abuse especially as to be honest, in my mid 50,s I could probably have been their grandmother 😳 these kinds of shits exist everywhere and are not worth a second thought.
There is NOTHING to be ashamed of in living in rented housing private or social, anyone who says differently is just a pathetic snob

wasdarknowblond · 23/03/2024 18:14

Ignorant loud-mouthed men like that need to be treated with the contempt’s they deserve. Enjoy your new home and f—k those arses.

I remember 30 years ago being heavily pregnant and pushing my toddler son and a white van passed me and one of the men inside called me a slag . I managed to catch up with them at the traffic lights and reached into my bag and wrote down their registration and said off duty WPC .They shit themselves. This was pre internet and pre mobile phone days . They would not dare do it now

JustMeAndTheFish · 23/03/2024 18:22

Sometimes just knowing that we’re in the right has to be enough. And if you’ve managed to escape DV and get a lovely new home then you’re definitely in the right. Enjoy the excitement of your new house and don’t even think about these ignorant idiots.

Coco1379 · 23/03/2024 18:36

Don’t let these mean people spoil your pleasure. Everyone deserves a decent home, and you are gracious enough to acknowledge your good fortune. I hope you and your son will be very happy. X

Engagebrain · 23/03/2024 18:37

Congratulations on your brand new house!! Ignore those idiots, they probably live in a house they're struggling to pay the mortgage on!!

Agreed. Just because social housing does not make as much profit as private landlords do it doesn't mean it is subsidised. Indeed, it has been illegal for councils to subsidise council housing for very many decades, if not since it was invented. Another popular Daily Mail lie.
