To be sad about what was said to me today

I have been lucky enough to get the keys for a new build from the council. It has a mix of private rent, council and home buyers. Some of the houses are still being built. Today I was waiting outside to get the keys and some builders went past in a car and said something along the lines of ‘…getting a house from the council’ and laughed really loud. I have been very lucky after fleeing DV with a 3 year old and I feel really upset and embarrassed

Congratulations on your new home and please savour the peace as you start making it yours.

That feeling of entering a new safe space that is yours never left me 14 years ago. It's such a feeling of relief Flowers

Ignore the ignorance of those arseholes, I bet they all have partners that think they are tossers. Grin

Ladyluckinred · 22/03/2024 15:19

What bored, sad, little men! OP, how are you doing in yourself after that? I can appreciate that you’re probably still in a state of vigilance/high alert after fleeing DV, so please do take care of your emotional well-being.

Get cosy in your home, grab a comforting scent and breath deeply. Attend to your embodied needs first x

Unfortunately, in some areas, many of those lucky enough to receive housing from the council do so because they chose a lifestyle that ensured they would get a free home. I'm speak from experience of having this within my family. For this reason, there are people who resent this, especially during times like these when many are struggling and not receiving any help from the gov.

Those builders would have no idea of what you've been through personally, and I'm sure they wouldn't have said that if they did, I'm sorry to hear about how it made you feel.

Xx

Bugger. I have to pay rent for my council house.

I could try again though. What lifestyle do I need to adopt?

And as for people resenting it, I know!!! And to top it all I don’t get any help from the government either!!! Bastards!!!

I do know what you mean though when you say you’ve seen it in your family, I’ve seen it in mine too. It’s such a shame when we’ve all got judgemental arseholes as relatives. We just have to rise above it and become better than them don’t we?

Xx

Justleaveitblankthen · 22/03/2024 15:21

There is a strong possibility that at least one of these builders grew up in a council house (maybe one lad kept quiet, but felt awkward?) and have grandparents still living in one?
So hypocrites and bullies.
Would they have said this to a 16stone bloke?
I (being a mouthy little thing) would have said this to them.
I would also have mentioned it to the office you collected keys from.

Utter knobheads.

Well done OP. Hope you will be very happy there 💐

Inthetropics · 22/03/2024 15:22

Some people are stupid and will say terrible stuff and make you feel bad. I get it. Sometimes when it happens to me I feel like everything is wrong in the world. BUT some people are lovely and will be kind and will be happy for you, which makes me feel the world is not so inhospitable after all.

Bringbackspring · 22/03/2024 15:25

WTF is wrong with people. As PP have said, getting a council house doesn't necessarily mean not paying rent. The 2 things are not one in the same. When my parents married they, and everyone else they knew moved into social housing and paid rent, all very straight forward and no giant waiting lists. It was the done thing and no one batted an eye lid. Home ownership was rare. The fact that since then the world has gone to hell in a hand cart so that rich people can get even richer is not your problem, or your doing. Ignore those ignorant losers and enjoy your new home.

Itiswhysofew · 22/03/2024 15:28

You deserve every bit of your new home. Good luck in it. Is your little one excited?Easter Smile

FOJN · 22/03/2024 15:29

Fuck em.

Focus on how you're going to make it yours.

Congratulations on your new home.

'Free home'? 🙄

Are you a builder who drives a car by any chance?

Snazzysausage · 22/03/2024 15:31

Ignore those ridiculous beings who open their mouths without engaging their brain at any point ever. I hope you and your little one have a very happy new life in your lovely home.

Birch101 · 22/03/2024 15:34

Honestly that situation is exactly what council housing is for in my opinion.

You have protected your children from harm and given them and yourself a fresh start and we are lucky to have social housing for that very reason.

It gives you security to build your life back up. Ignore them.

Semeliner · 22/03/2024 15:35

Any chance you’re projecting your feelings onto an innocent comment? Maybe they were talking about something else, maybe they were saying good for you? I don’t know anyone that would sneer at that. And if they were then quite frankly, fuck em. They’re part of the problem

Yogatoga1 · 22/03/2024 15:36

Fuck ‘em.

i used to have a Saturday job in the local budgens. We used to get idiots in who would make comments about “the YTS’er” back in the days of Youth Training Schemes for those leaving school at 16, which were perceived as for thick kids who’d failed their o’levels.

it used to make me laugh as it just showed them up as not being very bright making assumptions about people with no information.

fuck them.

Show me a council/HA tenant who has a free house and I’ll give you £1M

Teajenny7 · 22/03/2024 15:38

Ignore them. Congratulations.
Wishing you health and happiness in your new home.

A free home? No fair! I paid around £57k to live in my HA homes in the times I lived there!

Grumpynan · 22/03/2024 15:41

My mum use to call men like that “little big man” Shame the part that’s big is his mouth, he would make women much happier if it was the other way round, should feel sorry for him really 😂

SignoraVolpe · 22/03/2024 15:41

Too late now but if it happens again reply
Needs must, my ex was a tosser like you guys!

SpongeBob2022 · 22/03/2024 15:41

I'm sorry this happened to you. Allow yourself 5 minutes to sit and dwell on it as much as you like. Then draw a line, don't let your thoughts linger on it again, and enjoy your future in your new home.

Comedycook · 22/03/2024 15:42

Housing is a very contentious issue right now. There is a huge housing crisis...private rent is through the roof. People's mortgages are going up, that's if they can get on the ladder at all. What they said was unpleasant but it is very much borne out of jealousy

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 22/03/2024 15:44

You enjoy your new home OP. New build! How lovely. Ignore those twats. They’re probably working cash in hand when they can be bothered to work at all. Mugs. Enjoy every minute xx

Mmhmmn · 22/03/2024 15:44

Dont give it even another moment’s thought. That is purely a bunch of Neanderthals showing off to each other. Well done on getting out and moving along

AllTheMiniEggs · 22/03/2024 15:46

Situations such as yours are exactly why we should have council funded housing.

I'm absolutely delighted that you've got this exciting new start ahead of you and I suspect anyone who knew your circumstances would feel the same way.

Don't let those idiots ruin your day.

Wishing you all the luck in the world.

Mmhmmn · 22/03/2024 15:46

Look forward to decorating your new home just how you like it and being in safety and peace

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 22/03/2024 15:47

Free home? Here we go again. Same old nonsensical tosh trotted out. The ignorance on here is astonishing.
