Do you vape?

I know this will attract judgement but I'm not asking for criticism, just discussion.

Never been a smoker but recently took up vaping. Dh does it and so do a few friends. I was curious. We are going through a very stressful time in life - young dc and no help, demanding job, house renovation. I was winding down in the evenings using booze and junk food which wasn't good for me either so I suppose I just wanted to try something that helped relax me. I do enjoy it but I don't think I'm 'addicted' per se, for example I don't take it out with me during the day and don't miss it. I just use it in the evenings.

Anyway bizarrely I have health anxiety which is quite ridiculous when I think of all of the unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms I have. But I do worry about the vape. There is so much conflicting info out there - loads of sources saying it's much better than smoking others saying it's as bad or worse. All the alleged health issues they can cause but no definitive studies as they've not been around long enough.

So I guess I'm wondering if you vape, why? What does it bring you? And do you worry about the health impact?

It's stupid to think that it's as bad as smoking

No one is saying its good for you. But it's definitely better than smoking

Latest research indicates it causes the same type of cell damage in the mouth that lead to oral cancers as smoking does.

MrsMiddleMother · 22/03/2024 14:33

I used to smoke then started vaping over a year ago. Of course its just swapping one bad habit for another but that's the point, it wasn't originally intended for people who didn't smoke cigarettes. It's cheaper for me at £10 a week instead of £15 + and it doesn't make me stink. I still vape outside and away from the kids just as I did with cigarettes but my clothes and hair don't stink anymore. Even after washing my hands they would still smell a bit like cigarette smoke where as that doesn't happen anymore.

Well I was responding to your joke that vaping means I read things that aren’t there. (That was a joke, wasn’t it?)

not really @Waitingfordoggo

given that is precisely what you’d done

Telekoma · 22/03/2024 09:20

Because I don't mind. I quite like the smell of them.
As I said up thread, I didn't and don't allow tobacco products to be smoked in my home.

not a chance that i’d want to witness my child vaping in my home. It would be outside only 🤷

ForNaiceHiker · 22/03/2024 15:03

the idea of not being a smoker and taking the conscious decision to start vaping because you have young kids and house reno

is so f*ing weird

As a former smoker and current vaper, I totally agree. It's an utterly bizarre thing to do. Surely we all know how addictive nicotine is? If it wasn't, I'd not be vaping! I can't fathom why anybody would start vaping if they didn't smoke in the first place 🤷🏻‍♀️

ForNaiceHiker · 22/03/2024 15:16

makes me wonder whether the op ever reads or listens to the news!

Weird?

So isn't the choice to start smoking weird then too?

It's not the brightest decision. I have owned that. I started vaping for the same reason people probably start smoking, as a coping mechanism. Yeah it's 'just life' but it's a particularly stressful period in mine and I'm struggling. Unlike the saints on MN, meditation and massive salads aren't quite cutting it for me.

I'm always surprised at how vitriolic people can get over other peoples choices, that's weird imo.

yes both are bloody weird for an adult to start up vaping or smoking because of a young family and reno project!!

Not weird if we’re talking about a 15 year old succumbing to peer pressure

crumblingschools · 22/03/2024 16:12

As vaping was designed to help smokers stop smoking it does seem weird to start vaping when you have never smoked.

Oh! You do actually think vaping causes reading comprehension problems? Gosh. I look forward to seeing some research on that. 😂

you think people saying it’s bloody weird is “vitroel”? One for hyperbole it would seem

@Mumof2NDers Do you know it there is a way to read that article without signing up to the Times?

so not vaping just…. daftness?

otherwise why post a completely made up point that posters are It’s quite sweet that some posters think that people with an addiction will stop having this addiction because other people think we look silly 😂

Waitingfordoggo · 22/03/2024 16:16

Oh I am definitely daft @ForNaiceHiker- but I’m pretty sure vaping didn’t cause that- I’ve always been a wally.

fantalimon23 · 22/03/2024 16:17

@ForNaiceHiker I'm pretty sure not all smokers start as 15 year olds.

It's not just a reno and small kids but nice try to minimise.

I did say in my op that I welcomed discussion but no need for pointless judgement which is all you're offering with your 'weird' remarks.

By your logic any adult who takes up any unhealthy habit must be weird since most of them come with risks.

well no not all smokers start as teens / early twenties when very much led by peers

but i think we can be fairly confident the majority do. and that the majority of smokers didn’t make the conscious decision to take up smoking in their 30s/50s/50s

to suddenly decide to start doing something that you know is addictive as an adult, an adult with young children, and you know is unhealthy having never done before? yes weird.

Waitingfordoggo · 22/03/2024 16:22

ForNaiceHiker · 22/03/2024 16:17

Ah that makes sense then!

The point (if you can call it that) was that whether people look silly or not to others isn’t really relevant when it comes to addiction 🤷🏼‍♀️

The point posters have made about clouds of vape and unpleasant smells in public places is different- because it does affect others. (I do vape in public places but only when there is plenty of space between me and other members of the public. Walking my dog on the beach for eg- I’m often the only one there!)

ForNaiceHiker · 22/03/2024 16:23

but the posters were saying they thought it looked silly
not that they thought that this should make people give up

fantalimon23 · 22/03/2024 16:24

@ForNaiceHiker my words indeed. Well done. No flies on you. But I also said it's a stressful time in general. I'm struggling. And no, turning to a harmful habit probably isn't the brightest idea. But people do it all the time whether it's with booze, food, gambling, spending, smoking, whatever. None of them good for life/health but not all of us are perfect.

Really not sure what you're trying to add to the discussion other than insults and judgement.

I just couldn’t see what it was adding to the thread given that the questions asked by the OP were:

So I guess I'm wondering if you vape, why? What does it bring you? And do you worry about the health impact?

OP didn’t say:

Please comment on your impression of people who vape in the street.

So we’ve circled back to reading comprehension!

Anyhoo. I sadly have to go to work but it’s been fun.
