Do you vape?

I know this will attract judgement but I'm not asking for criticism, just discussion.

Never been a smoker but recently took up vaping. Dh does it and so do a few friends. I was curious. We are going through a very stressful time in life - young dc and no help, demanding job, house renovation. I was winding down in the evenings using booze and junk food which wasn't good for me either so I suppose I just wanted to try something that helped relax me. I do enjoy it but I don't think I'm 'addicted' per se, for example I don't take it out with me during the day and don't miss it. I just use it in the evenings.

Anyway bizarrely I have health anxiety which is quite ridiculous when I think of all of the unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms I have. But I do worry about the vape. There is so much conflicting info out there - loads of sources saying it's much better than smoking others saying it's as bad or worse. All the alleged health issues they can cause but no definitive studies as they've not been around long enough.

So I guess I'm wondering if you vape, why? What does it bring you? And do you worry about the health impact?

i suppose if it was really central to your life… you would defend it relentlessly

Jesus Christ. I've got insomnia and arthritis and I'm on benefits. Yes, I occasionally play Red Dead Redemption when I can't sleep.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything?

my friend who vapes says she always vapes so much less when visiting me because i ask her to go outside

could be a good way to getting your child to reduce!

Edited

Agree with this. I switched to vaping from smoking, but I treat it the same as smoking and will only vape outside for 5 minute stints. It means that I'm not puffing away on it all the time.

because vaping, as evidence by your staunch defending on it on a number of other threads, is obviously very bloody important to you! and it’s making you post daft nonsense that the abode advertising clearly isn’t pitcher at the youth market (oh yes, one of those companies had to pull the entire campaign as the Oz gov said it was pitched to the youth market!)

ok if that’s how you read it

not that because you vape and because you vape extensively you refuse to open your mind to any argument other than - it’s fine fine FINE!!

TheNewDeer · 23/03/2024 15:55

i had no bloomin idea you were disabled or on benefits. You have shoehorned that in for some reason

Is this really what you want to be doing with your Saturday?

TheNewDeer · 23/03/2024 15:58

because as i have repeatedly said

you were on the other thread i was on saying that no issue with tweens gaming very violent games or for extensive periods of time.

When the evidence suggest otherwise

and you’re doing the same thing here with vaping

because it’s important to you , you are blinded to the evidence

This has got nothing to do with this topic whatsoever.

I suggest you stop derailing this thread by criticising what a disabled person does with their time.

It's sad but not surprising (especially on AIBU) that people can't have a discussion about something without it resorting to personal attacks.

A simple 'I don't agree with vaping because of xyz' would be better than calling people who choose to do it thick, low class, weird, bad parents etc.

These threads always go the same way, not sure why I expected different.

Appreciate all viewpoints and will definitely check out the Jordan North documentary at some point.

This is why it's a bad idea to scrape unrelated shite into a thread though isn't it

lallaland123 · 23/03/2024 16:24

read this thread yesterday , decided to never vape again and still haven't vaped ( over 24 hours )

I thought i'm not "very" addicted just a little

but having huge cravings now . :(

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/03/2024 16:38

lallaland123, I don't know if you have nicotine in your vape but if you do, what got me through when I first stop smoking, was reading that nicotine is out of the body in 24 hours. I thought that was doable, counting down the hours.

The habit though, that's another matter. Best of luck to you. I don't recommend sugar almonds.

MustBeGinOclock · 23/03/2024 17:51

People walking around with these things perma attached to their faces. Another poster had it spot on..adult dummy equivalent. It really looks so unattractive. The truth is not enough research yet but so far not looking good.

MagentaRocks · 23/03/2024 18:36

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/03/2024 14:27

That's ok, I can believe that many vape users wouldn't believe that vape manufacturers are dumb enough to deliberately market to school children. It suits the narrative to be dumb but, it's not the manufacturers guilty of that.

Big Tobacco. Heard of that? They are the tobacco companies and they are losing cigarette and pipe smokers in absolute droves. That's due to deaths (old age or illness), government intervention by restricting access - leading to supermarkets tightening up selling practices, advertising and many other actions.

Those are the companies behind vapes. Gotta keep their punters... at any cost.

OneTC probably could answer this better but vapes can be bought and used without nicotine. Ex-smokers would probably want the nicotine liquid but who then is buying the vapes without the nicotine, and why?

I am cutting down on the nicotine level and will use zero nicotine for a bit before stopping. I am planning on using some with and some without nicotine as I drop down. It should help me stop totally.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/03/2024 18:47

Good luck to you, MagentaRocks, it's not an easy addiction to conquer but it is doable. As I said, for me the 24 hours and you're clear of nicotine, was a huge help.

You'll do it.

ViaMargutta · 23/03/2024 19:59

Yes, I vape. Smoked for about 20 years before. My brother introduced me to vaping, I liked it, so swapped cigarettes for a vape. Why do I vape? Because I'm addicted to nicotine, I like vaping and don't give particular shit about my health. We'll all die someday, so meh.

I vape inside my house, inside my parents house, and in all of my friends houses. None of them mind. Some of them are smokers, some of them vape, some do neither. Tbh, I never met such dramatic people in reality, banging on about 'the stench', only here. It smells of strawberries and the like, ffs, not a latrine. But to be fair, judging by multiple threads on MN, people on here start 'gagging' if they smell someone's washing liquid, colleagues perfume makes them suffocate, some of them can even smell when other women have their periods, due to their use of bog-standard always pads (I shit you not). Because 'all those stinky chemicals!'. As I have no penchant for drama and (apparently) a shit nose - I vape wherever I want to and don't mind others vaping or smoking.

I also vape when out and about and in all hotel rooms. If someone doesn't like it - they're most welcome to come and say it to my face. Never happened, funnily enough. They're probably 'don't like to make a fuss' - spineless, in other words.

If you want to vape - do so. Other people's opinions are completely irrelevant.

Tsulsaquoola · 23/03/2024 21:59

And there we have it. "If you want to vape do so. Other people's opinions are completely irrelevant."

I gave up smoking when I found out I was pregnant with my first child. He's 25 now. My dh tried. And failed. And tried. And failed again.

So now he vapes. He's more addicted to the vape than he ever was to smoking. He doesn't limit it at all - he vapes constantly: in the house, in the car, in bed, while I'm eating.

I fucking hate it. At least with smoking he had some awareness it was unpleasant and anti-social. It is literally the first thing he reaches for when he wakes and the last thing he does before he falls asleep.

If I object I'm told "it's just water vapour".

I actually think this might turn into as big a public health crisis as smoking.

The risks of the vapour are negligible with any contents dispersing to nothing over 50cm of the source.
Due to the research in the harm caused by Chemicals involved in smoking harm from vaping can be extrapolated from these. Just as in the latest research they wouldn’t know what to look for without the history from smoking.
Of course it won’t be harm free and the plethora of flavours might make analysis of their risks difficult but the constituent parts are minimal and known.

Beezknees · 24/03/2024 11:08

Nope, never vaped or smoked. Completely up to you what you do but I do think the "stressful life" excuse is so lame and a cop out. Just own your choices.

beliefbelieve · 25/03/2024 05:53

Young children plus taking up an addictive substance that is increasingly and widely publicised as having serious health concerns? Surely you want to be as healthy as possible for your family? surely you want to set a good example? I could understand if it was a pre existing addiction to children but to start up randomly one night whilst your children are sleeping…. well i don’t really have the word for it but essentially WTF?

beliefbelieve · 25/03/2024 05:56

the good news Op is that you seem to have well and truly recovered from your “health anxiety”!!
