Jesus held on the cross with nails in his hands

DD5 is in year 1 and has been learning about Jesus at school. Great stuff in the spirit of Easter.

The RE teacher told the class how Jesus was NAILED to the cross.

This is quite graphic for a little girl who believes that the Easter bunny will leave eggs in our garden.

Should I tell school that this is too much info for little ears?

Tell me you don't understand Christianity without telling me you don't understand Christianity 🙄

That’s your job apparently.

Do they cover the actual origin of Easter in schools, the pagan festival of Ostara?

They did in DTs RC school.

Grew up catholic and had been seeing the huge crucifix in the church for years, never traumatised by it.

What I did find traumatising was the foot washing in church on maundy Thursday.

Very firmly atheist now.

I've just been teaching this, actually. Whole school primary assembly at CofE school. Had to go back and check the children's bible to see if I used the word "nailed" and yes.

V traumatising 😁

It is gruesome. I remember hearing it in church when I was very small and being shocked. I'm not sure how you tell the Easter story if you miss out the crucifiction.

guineverehadgreeneyes · 21/03/2024 10:41

"DD5 is in year 1 and has been learning about Jesus at school. Great stuff in the spirit of Easter."

Well, let's not let a graphic story "in the spirit of Easter" screw up the magic of making memories around bunnies and egg hunts...

Velvian · 21/03/2024 10:41

Reminds me of the school hymn we used to sing at Easter. 'Led like a lamb to the slaughter in silence and pain'

Just before the chorus a repetitive dirge of 'Bleeding, dying...' -character building stuff!😅

chocolatefiends · 21/03/2024 10:41

By the end of KS1 mine had learnt that Jesus was nailed to a cross, that people shot and killed each other in both world wars, and that Victorian school children got hit with a cane by their teachers. History is pretty awful!

They also watch BBC Newsround sometimes at the end of the school day where they learn about current wars, current famines, people in the UK relying on food banks and all kinds of other negative stuff that's going on now.

I think it depends if it’s a Christian school I’m guessing.
Ours went toCatholic school initially though and they were taught the Christian meaning.

I however also went to Catholic school and was taught the origins also of all celebrations within the religion including the timings and calendar.

Even if they go to a secular school, RE is part of the UK curriculum, I’m not aware there’s much on the curriculum on paganism though.

We've never been to church so DD has never seen a Jesus on the cross...

Still? That's VERY graphic for a young child!

I agree with PPs that it's so horrible that they have to be told young when they don't filly grasp the whole thing.

OP, I’m a junior worship lead and I have never talked about nails to very young children. Jesus suffered and died on the cross - and I say it was a horrible way to die. That’s it.

ilovesushi · 21/03/2024 10:45

@Velvian I used to love that song! I think it was everyone's favourite especially the chorus.😂I'm now remembering others like "Here comes Jesus, See him walking on the water" and "Cross over the road my friend". You just opened a whole stores of memories.

Jetstream · 21/03/2024 10:49

Christianity has a bit of a fetish when it comes to detailing punishments. They like it gory.
We were told this at a young age too. We were also told that crucifying was a commonly used capital punishment at that time. Also that Jesus got off lightly as people were also crucified upside down.
Oh and that women were treated really badly, often traveled in with the cattle and sheep while the men traveled in comfort on seats.

And this is news why? It's the Easter story. Children have been taught it for generations.

Easter bunnies 🤦‍♀️ Easter is not about bunnies or chocolate, op. Grow up.

This!! God forbid your little princess will know the real meaning of things eh! 🤣

phauxtox · 21/03/2024 10:52

Every Catholic on Mumsnet is like, she got to 5 before hearing this? She'll be fine seriously.

Yourethebeerthief · 21/03/2024 10:53

When told in an age-appropriate manner, biblical stories are no more gruesome than most traditional fairy tales. Although a growing number of people want to sanitise these too. Such a shame.

IsthisthereallifeIsthisjustfantasy · 21/03/2024 10:54

BobbyBiscuits · 20/03/2024 23:16

If you don't want her to be Christian just say the Jesus thing is just a story, and of course noone gets nailed to crosses and dies and come back to life. But some people believe it, just like the Easter bunny. It's all nonsense and the main crux is you get chocolate.

Edited

Fascinating, and deeply ironic use of "crux" here.

CultOfRamen · 21/03/2024 10:55

Jeez keep her away from the internet

I've always thought that if any other religion had as its main symbol a man NAILED TO A CROSS, the Average Brit would be completely and utterly horrified. It's weird the way we all shrug, oh yeah, totes normal.

We told DT’s that they are just stories - some people think they’re true but others (us) don’t.

Erdinger · 21/03/2024 10:58

OP is this a Catholic or very religious Christian school ? If yes this is the “ norm “. Those of us that were taught this got over it.

sashh · 21/03/2024 10:59

I actually think the nailing isn't the worst part of crucifiction. You actually die of exhaustion and suffocation, hence the breaking of legs to speed things up.

As to nails through hands / wrists I think rop was used and the nails were just because someone wanted to inflict more pain.

Hoppinggreen · 21/03/2024 11:00

TheGreenManalishiWithTheTwoProngedCrown · 21/03/2024 10:22

Afterwards my version of Easter was always bunnies, chicks, lambs, flowers and blossom.

Nothing to do with Easter, in other words.

As much as some bloke nailed to a cross, if not more
