To think that this is a prime example of the entitlement from some people in this country?

Someone on a large FB group that I am on posted yesterday to say that they want to move abroad and gave examples of a couple of countries that they want to go to.

They then said that they live in council housing here so would need to be 'housed' over there and how do they go about getting housed?

Basically they wanted to move abroad and get given that country's equivalent of a council house/social housing on arrival.

AIBU to think this is the absolute height of entitlement?

I'd say it was an exercise in naivety and daydreaming with some entitlement for good measure.

It's incredibly difficult to relocate without freedom of movement. To my knowledge you need things like minimum levels of education, a job offer, sponsorship etc etc.

MiddleParking · 18/03/2024 13:38

Nah that’s not really a prime example of anything.

hattie43 · 18/03/2024 13:38

I suppose if you've never had to pay your way you expect you'll always be subsidised, whether in this country or the next .

BakedTattie · 18/03/2024 13:40

I think it’s more naivety

BobbyBiscuits · 18/03/2024 13:40

Just tell them to buy a one way ticket to Buenos Aires and the local council are offering mansions. Lol. Or have they tried Rwanda? Great weather.
It'd be good if they left and then their council house can go to someone more deserving.

Exactly this.

I worked in a European country local government office years ago. I was told that if you were in council accommodation in your own country you absolutely could request a transfer to another European council accommodation system. Whether it happens regularly and is feasible to do, I don’t know but the issue for most people here is that you would not leave a council property in for example London to move to one in Poland as whilst it would be cheaper so would your wages/benefits and relatively you wouldn’t benefit in the same way as someone coming from say Poland would by coming to London and earning London wages ( even though their rent here would be higher).

MILTOBE · 18/03/2024 13:41

Are those countries in Europe? If so, find out whether they voted for Brexit.

TimeandMotion · 18/03/2024 13:42

I think it is a prime example of why that person has never managed to earn enough money to buy their own home…

MealDeal1 · 18/03/2024 13:43

Nope was the US and Australia

RoberttPostesChild · 18/03/2024 13:44

Ok, this is bonkers.

MILTOBE · 18/03/2024 13:47

It's quite funny that they want to move to the US and live in social housing. Do they know how difficult it is to move there?

Redannie118 · 18/03/2024 13:50

It's ironic that entitlement only applies to working classes and not all the previous posters who assume you get handed a council house with a pot of gold and a goat. You need to pay rent. If the person who asked about moving countries was in standard rental property, would you have the same reaction?

MikiSu · 18/03/2024 13:52

MiddleParking · 18/03/2024 13:38

Nah that’s not really a prime example of anything.

I'd say it's a prime example of stupidity and ignorance!

saveforthat · 18/03/2024 13:54

I thought this was going to be a sort of a reverse and you were talking about migrants coming to England.

KreedKafer · 18/03/2024 13:55

I think it's a prime example of someone who is just really fucking thick.

Because people in council.housing don't pay there way ?

Nobody ever comes to the UK from abroad, and get social housing do they ...

PossumintheHouse · 18/03/2024 13:57

It's a prime example of stupidity, that's what it is. How are they going to fund this fantasy move abroad? Do they have a desirable job to fill the shortcomings of the role in that particularly country? They've got bloody no chance with places like the US, New Zealand, Australia.

That's not entitlement, that's pure stupidity.

Only there not but mumsnet can't grasp that .

WillimNot · 18/03/2024 14:10

Are you shocked?

It's pretty similar to what the likes of the Mail will have you believe when people arrive in our country, so it's always going to cause some to believe the same happens when we go abroad.

I don't think it's entitled, more an indication that the right wing media narrative is so effective people expect the same to happen abroad.

Really I thought a social housing 3 bed would be cheaper than a private rent 3 bed. Am I wrong (I could well be as I would never be allowed one)
Also I am sure I have heard of people getting housing benefit. Is that not a subsidy?
