To think that this is a prime example of the entitlement from some people in this country?

Someone on a large FB group that I am on posted yesterday to say that they want to move abroad and gave examples of a couple of countries that they want to go to.

They then said that they live in council housing here so would need to be 'housed' over there and how do they go about getting housed?

Basically they wanted to move abroad and get given that country's equivalent of a council house/social housing on arrival.

AIBU to think this is the absolute height of entitlement?

I think it's a prime example of someone who is just really fucking thick.

100% this.

Plus I'd wager a fair amount that the "someone" in the FB group has form for moaning about immigrants to the UK and the benefits received.

she said subsidised

Council housing isn't subsidised.

Some people who live in council housing get housing benefit (so it is subsidised for them), but that's also true for some people in private rented accommodation.

Really I thought a social housing 3 bed would be cheaper than a private rent 3 bed. Am I wrong (I could well be as I would never be allowed one)
Also I am sure I have heard of people getting housing benefit. Is that not a subsidy?

Not always ,and even if it is cheaper it's sometimes not massively cheaper
And whilst this may blow your mind many people in social.housing pay their own rent
Also many private renters also get housing benefit.

I suppose if you've never had to pay your way you expect you'll always be subsidised, whether in this country or the next .

@kitsuneghost I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you wernt gaslighting. She ALSO said "never had to pay your way"

If God forbid we ever have another lockdown i REALLY hope those doing the essential jobs that kept the country going, lock down too. WHERE THE FUCK DO YOU LOT THINK THE PEOPLE THAT DO THOSE JOBS LIVE!

Because i really think some of you need to learn the hard way.

Social housing tenants do pay rent. My mate works for a Housing Assoc in the rents collection team so I imagine her job is pretty boring if they don’t!

Nobody said they didn't pay rent. Of course everyone pays rent. But some on very low incomes can get help

Well, it depends how you define "subsidised".

Around here, rent on the average 3-bed council house with two gardens and a substantial driveway is around £400/month. A similar house (read: identical, it's an ex-council house that's outside the 10 year post-purchase agreement), privately rented, is around £850-900/month.

Might not be directly subsidised, but it's heavily discounted. On top of that, there's the Right to Buy, which effectively works out as "most of what you pay in rent will go to a discount on the property if you decide to buy".

Everyone at my work is private rent or homeowners
Maybe it's my area but none of the essential workers I know and work with would qualify for a council house.

isthismylifenow · 18/03/2024 14:38

They are certainly in for a bit of a surprise then.

Perhaps they will now realise the benefit of being where they are now then.

Grass is not always greener and all that.

Yes, good thing too. And private renters can apply also.

I think it is a prime example of why that person has never managed to earn enough money to buy their own home…

Being a tenant and not a homeowner does not equate to stupidity, nor the ability to purchase your own property.
Some people will never be able to buy, regardless.

OriginalUsername2 · 18/03/2024 14:40

As this thread demonstrates, people have differing levels of knowledge about how things work.

Its something my late mil would have thought possible. She was very uneducated and lived a small life around other uneducated people.

Not the same everywhere -

Im in a 2 bed council flat my 'subsidised' rent is £840 per month, which i pay all of- Flat next door is on a private rent of £875.

Rid · 18/03/2024 14:41

I’d say it’s probably someone trolling the group tbh.

I would be delighted if essential workers could go straight to the top of the list for council housing.Unfortunately you are obviously not aware the reality is somewhat different and they will depending on area have not a chance in hell of council accomodation.

Housing benefit is not exclusive to council housing

Sometimes when I think this site can't be inundated by more deeply unpleasant, vindictive posters I am disabused of that notion......

@Treeper22 Its why i didnt swallow the "all in this together" narrative during Covid and acted accordingly because i knew it would be back to the default setting...........and here we are

Yowzer, that's rough.

Are there any special circumstances there, or is it just scarcity?

IncompleteSenten · 18/03/2024 14:53

I'd assume lack of understanding or ignorance about how things may work in different countries rather than sense of entitlement. Unless they got nasty and started insisting they had the right to blah blah. Then yes, very entitled.
