Who folds up your sofa throws at the end of the night?

We have invested in 2 gorgeous velvet sofas from Loaf. They look gorgeous when the cushions are plumped and the throw blankets are folded.

I often go up first and ask DH and kids to tidy away blankets and arrange throw cushions (2 on each sofa) before coming up. 9/10 they don’t which just makes the room look crap. So it falls to me every morning. Tbh I’m the only one that cares.

What happens in your house?

I don’t think it’s too much to ask to expect to come down to a tidy room.
Unplumped cushions and unfolded throws don't equal untidy to me though so you'd have a job convincing me it's a daily task you'd like me to take on if I lived with you!

SameSameButDeliverance · 13/03/2024 10:24

Single person here.

I plump the (velvet) sofa and rearrange the cushions every night before bed. Couldn’t stand coming down to the mess in the morning.

yogpot · 13/03/2024 10:24

The cleaner once a week, otherwise they’re just wherever and I’ve never thought to care. My toddler is usually making forts out of them.

Beleop · 13/03/2024 10:24

Nobody, they’re just left where they are, don’t see the point in folding them up when it’s just going to be used later or the next day.

Opol · 13/03/2024 10:26

I’m not asking any of them to hoover/wipe down the sofas with microfibres.

As I live alone, I have to do it or it doesn't happen!

BranchGold · 13/03/2024 10:28

I think it’s a whoever is using the throws/sat awkwardly on the cushions job to fix.

Im the one who usually pulls the throw over me in the evening while I’m on the sofa, so when I go up I fold it neatly and plump my half of the cushions up.

if DP was using a throw I’d expect him to do the same, same for kids. Just like it I was the last person watching tv, I’d turn it off, turn the lamps off, take my drinking glass to the dishwasher and tidy up the sofa, all part of a bedtime routine.

WatchandWaitorNot · 13/03/2024 10:30

Yep, I might plump up the cushions before we sit down the next evening but the throws only get folded once a week by the cleaner!

Incidentally, did other people grow up with sofa throws/blankets, or are they a relatively new thing? I was born early seventies and so lived with my parents till the late eighties. We were quite a relaxed, informal family (tea on a tray in front of the TV sometimes) but my parents would never have dreamed of wrapping themselves in a blanket on the sofa of an evening. That was for invalids!

Now, I love a nice soft cosy blanket. Ours are definitely not just for decoration.

I’ve also tried to get them all to shove the blankets in to the ottoman if they can’t be arsed to be folded. Even that is too much.

I don’t think it’s too much to ask to expect to come down to a tidy room.

I really couldn’t get worked up about this. It is simply a choice to have them tidied. Your choice. It is not a hygiene thing. Simply aesthetics. If you wish them tidied daily do it yourself. It’s not a big job. And can be left not done.

minipie · 13/03/2024 10:31

I do it because I’m the only one who uses it so fair enough

(I often leave it in a heap though as I’m a bit of a slattern and don’t really care that much)

C1N1C · 13/03/2024 10:32

First world problems...

Whomever is close by. One of us might be tidying in the kitchen, the other does this...

EffortlesslyInelegant · 13/03/2024 10:33

I'm trying to imagine a world where anyone even thinks about this never mind frets themself silly. Too weird for words.

I like my house to look tidy 🤷🏻‍♀️

BranchGold · 13/03/2024 10:40

I don’t think the op is asking too much from her family to put things away that have been used, either folded neatly or in the ottoman.

we teach children to tidy their toys away, I put my toiletries away in the bathroom cupboards otherwise, shoes and coats get hung up etc. it’s basic household etiquette.

LBOCS2 · 13/03/2024 10:44

DH or me, whenever we decide that the sitting room looks untidy. Our fabulous cleaners do it once a week, we probably do it once a week each, the rest of the time they just stay on the sofas as if we're in the room we're probably using the throws, and if we're not in the room it's not bothering us?

Octavia64 · 13/03/2024 10:45

This a level of tidiness that some people will think is not needed.

As a pp has said, it's not about hygiene or about whether you can use the sink in the morning because there is stuff on it, it's totally an aesthetics issue.

I wouldn't be prepared to take on this as an extra job just because you like it to look that way every morning.

gamerchick · 13/03/2024 10:47

I only care about the kitchen before bed. Living rooms get tidied during the day but they're like... Lived in. As long as there are no food stuffs or packets, I couldn't care about plumping cushions before bed.

gannett · 13/03/2024 10:49

It would never cross my mind that this is something to do daily. Or at all really. If you can't cope with sofa throws being a bit askew or not neatly folded that's a you problem.

I'm the one who hoovers the sofas and even then I don't fold the throws, I just chuck them back on the sofa. They're only going to get sat on (or under) in a few hours anyway.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 13/03/2024 10:49

I do it in our house. I like a tidy house before I go to bed. I have OCD and if I don’t do it I can’t sleep.

We've always used throws to cover up our shit cheap sofas so they stay thrown at all times.

CreditMunkah · 13/03/2024 10:50

No one. The dogs sleep on them 😂

gannett · 13/03/2024 10:50

Plumping cushions is also not something I've ever done in my life.

So many interesting things to do and think about in life, can't really fathom any way folding throws and plumping cushions would take up my brain space.

Franker · 13/03/2024 10:51

Dh tends to gather up any glasses etc, lob cushions into something like the right place, and fold up any throws that have used, while I'm stacking the dishwasher.

He sometimes forgets as we don't always use that room in the evening, but he's mostly on it😁

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 13/03/2024 10:51

You're the one who's bothered by it so you deal with it

There's no need for it to be straightened every day other than "you think it looks untidy"

mindutopia · 13/03/2024 10:51

No one. The lounge looks like enough of a shithole that an untidy throw is not going to add anymore to the chaos. 😂
