To ask how much you spend on your hair a year

I mean hair cuts, colour, styling and special products. Over and above normal shampoo.
Just read on a thread where prices were mentioned casually and I am amazed at the costs.
I get my hair cut maybe three times a year. Spend less than £150 in total. My hair could look significantly better if I spent more I'm sure, and if you can afford it then no reason not to spend more.
Just wondering what is normal.

Those of you who have toner only at a shop, what does this do?

When your roots grow back after highlights what colour do you have just for on the roots ?
How does it match in with the other highlights?

These threads always surprise me as most mumsnetters say they’re in six figure salary jobs… yet most seem to cut their own hair!

Why?

People prioritise different things and are willing to spend more on some things and less on others especially if it is something they can easily do themselves and/or have the time.

Plus, just because someone has the money to spend more on certain things doesn’t mean they have to or want to.

Some posters who do spend less have said they spend more on other things like their nails or skincare.

Mines more expensive as trying to cover grey- cut and colour every 7-8 weeks so about £1000 a year.
Was much cheaper when I was younger!
Also as my hair is shorter now so loses its shape/ style more quickly.
I used to have it cut every 3 months when it was longer.
Have tried colouring it myself but looks kinda solid and I prefer it with a few highlights to break it up.
It's only only pampering/ luxury I get so happy ( ish) to continue.
A good cut and colour makes feel and look so much better.

childfreebychoice · 13/03/2024 16:54

About £900 for me. Cut and colour every six weeks, then colour conditioners at home in between.

orangeleopard · 13/03/2024 17:10

I go hairdressers and get a restyle maybe once a year, so £35? I cut my own full fringe at home, so it saves me a lot of money in the long run.

But I do get a nice shampoo and conditioner, hair oil and heat protection spray. So probably about £20 once a month, every other month?

HolidayHappy123 · 13/03/2024 20:44

About £5k!

HolidayHappy123 · 13/03/2024 20:45

2 x £45 blow drys a week.
Tint @ £80 every 4 weeks
Highlights @ £120 every 3 months
Plus the occasional cut

SkaneTos · 13/03/2024 20:55

@burnoutbabe
Thank you for explaining!
It sounds like it would suit me to get my hair cut at a training salon, if I ever live close to one in the future.

AffIt · 13/03/2024 20:58

I don't colour my hair and only get it cut twice a year @ £65 a go, so £130 there, but I do buy specialist curl products (shampoo, conditioner, gel and creme), so probably about another £150 on that sort of thing over the course of a year.

Holy shit, almost £300 a year is quite a lot...

Ultravox · 13/03/2024 20:59

Cut & colour every 7 weeks - works out about £500 per year

RatatouillePie · 13/03/2024 21:00

If I have free time then a hair cut would not be my first choice of activity so I spend about £40 a year as I like certain shampoo and conditioner.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/03/2024 21:05

@RatatouillePie I find the trip to the hairdresser a chore but the results are important to me. I'm going on Saturday :)

PonyPatter44 · 13/03/2024 21:11

£850 or so! I have a cut and colour every seven weeks, and spend a fair bit on nice shampoo and conditioner because I am a sucker for advertising and believe that the next product will be The One that will give me beautiful Kate Middleton-esque hair!

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 13/03/2024 21:14

Had my hair cut for the first time in about 4 years recently (I say this as don't think I've had it cut since before lockdown 😁
It cost 17 quid.
So under twenty pounds in four years lol (obviously as you say not counting buying shampoo)

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 13/03/2024 21:15

HolidayHappy123 · 13/03/2024 20:44

About £5k!

5 grand a year?!
Fuck me.
Edit to say fucking hell instead as original sounded a bit propositional 🤣🤣

luckylavender · 13/03/2024 21:18

I'd say £440. A cut and a full head of highlights is £88 and I do that maybe 5 times a year?

sanityisamyth · 13/03/2024 21:18

Nothing. I buy the cheapest shampoo and rarely have it cut.

protectthesmallones · 13/03/2024 21:20

£140 in salon for cut and style.

£2.50 on styling products a month so £30 a year

And hair colour for roots only which works out to four boxes at £14 total

£185 for the year. Not too bad as I'm fairly high maintenance grey/ brown.

Glitterblue · 13/03/2024 21:21

£18 roughly every 6 weeks or so, which works out at somewhere around £144 a year.

I suspect different people answer different questions.

That said there could be a correlation between people in high paying jobs with kids and people who are fairly time poor, which might begin to explain it. Pretty much everyone I work with will be on £40k+ & £100k+ isn’t uncommon. Many of the women don’t go to the hairdressers more often than 2-3 times a year not through thrift but through time constraints and prioritising things with the kids when not working. A few like me barely go at all and in our case it’s universally because we find getting hair cut really boring and are fortunate to have hair that tolerates being mainly ignored without any real harm done.

oviraptor21 · 14/03/2024 06:23

Nothing. I used to colour it but as I've got older it seems to be colouring itself which is handy! Trim it myself about twice a year.
It wouldn't look better if I had it styled though I guess if I had a very special event and wanted it loose and flowing I may choose to get it done.

anon4net · 14/03/2024 06:25

Nothing.

Cut it myself. No colour. No budget for doing any different!

Lulu1919 · 14/03/2024 07:03

Four box dyes a year
Cut my own fringe
Hubby cuts the length with his razor ...simple straight line !!

VictoriaToria · 14/03/2024 07:07

Currently it’s £140 for a full head of highlights at my hairdressers and I go four times a year, so £560 a year! They have announced they’re increasing prices from April too! 😩

VictoriaToria · 14/03/2024 07:14

£140 includes a cut and style too!

I love my hairdresser, she’s a perfectionist and I’ve never been disappointed with the colour, however the prices are increasing so much I might have to drop to three times a year or start shopping round for a cheaper salon!
