To ask how much you spend on your hair a year

potas · 13/03/2024 08:08

I mean hair cuts, colour, styling and special products. Over and above normal shampoo.
Just read on a thread where prices were mentioned casually and I am amazed at the costs.
I get my hair cut maybe three times a year. Spend less than £150 in total. My hair could look significantly better if I spent more I'm sure, and if you can afford it then no reason not to spend more.
Just wondering what is normal.

Zilch. A friend cuts my hair when I see her, about once a year. I love going to the hairdresser but cat justify the expense.

AlfrescoPotato · 13/03/2024 08:32

£450.

I have full head highlights (with a darker root fade) done 3 times a year, with a trim, at £150 a time.

BridieLand · 13/03/2024 08:33

A family member trims it for free (when I remember to ask!) which only takes about 10 mins anyway.

I buy a £4 conditioner that maybe lasts a couple of months, so let's say £24 a year.

Redlarge · 13/03/2024 08:33

I cut it myself.
I buy 2 for £12 hair dye every 8 weeks and do roots every 4 weeks.

I buy loreal professional shampoo and conditioner, which i get about 6 months from as i also have the conditioner left over from the dye. I only was my hair 2x a week.

So I'd say with everything about £160 a year inc hairspray, heat protector, hair oil etc.

DinnaeFashYersel · 13/03/2024 08:35

Same as you OP. 3 cuts a year and total of about £150.

I'm 50 and only a few grays which I'm fine to embrace. Maybe if I'd got the greys when I was younger get and less confident I'm might have got into colouring it.

My hair is curly so doesn't need cut very often so that helps too.

SirWalterElliot · 13/03/2024 08:35

Hairdresser 3x per year - total £180
Products apx £120 per year
(Curly hair)

Edited for clarity

Caerulea · 13/03/2024 08:37

Nothing beyond shampoo & conditioner. I'd love to get regular trims but hairdressers seem to really struggling with 1A hair (though my sons barber knows how to cut it, it's a running joke about it being a pita, but only does men's hair 😭)

To add - did spend nearly £200 on cut & colour two years ago, immediately got covid & sweated all the lovely ginger out within a week)

Minfilia · 13/03/2024 08:38

£1,200 ish.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/03/2024 08:39

Cut, colour and blow dry every 7 weeks. Probably works out at about £120 pcm - about £1400 per annum. This is very reasonable for SW London.

I spend about the same on clothes and about £750 on make-up and perfume!

I am in my 60s and still work full-time and it's how I chose to spend my money. My 30 something self would be appalled not about the clothes

Mumblechum0 · 13/03/2024 08:39

£1400 a year. Go every 6 weeks. M guy charges £80 ph and I always tip.

i see 5 to 10 new clients a day and want to look well groomed and professional so always have good hair and manicured nails.

when. I retire in 5 years I’ll revert to factory settings, white hair, no makeup, joggers 😊

CharlotteStreetW1 · 13/03/2024 08:43

According to my calculator £433.333333335.

Every six weeks @ £50 a pop for a "cut and finish". I don't colour it. I use a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner and a root boost spray.

I have cut it myself before in harder times and during lockdown but it's a short layered bob at the moment which is beyond my DIY skills and I lurve going to the hairdresser's.

Yearendjoy · 13/03/2024 08:44

Between £100 and £150 every 10 weeks.

Teenangels · 13/03/2024 08:48

About 2.5k

I have a cut and hi lights every 6-7 weeks at £225, and probably a blow dry every 3 weeks if going out.

Shampoo and Conditioner I spend £60 a month.

squashyhat · 13/03/2024 08:50

3-4 cuts at £35 each. Plus 3-4 box dyes at £10 each so £180 max.

Caffeineneedednow · 13/03/2024 08:50

Outside my shampoo/ conditioner u spend nothing. Once a year or so my mum cuts my very curly hair in a straight line.

I do spend more on Conditioner as its the o ly way I have found to tame my hair. So probably 3 quid a month or so.

Mitsouko1919 · 13/03/2024 08:52

Approximately £600 - £800 pa.

I disliked my hair for the first 40 years of my life. When I was a child it was a lovely natural blonde colour but then just went a boring light brown. I kept it all one length and spent about £20 a year on six monthly trims with the young style team at a local salon who offer cheap simple haircuts as part of their training. I always used good products, so probably spent around £100 a year on Aveda shampoo and conditioner. But I could never understand why people could describe their hair as their crowning glory, when mine was such a boring miserable let-down.

Got to 40 and decided to spend some time and proper money on myself and my hair. Since then I've been having it coloured at Aveda in Covent Garden 3-4 times a year. It's a lovely pampering session and very good for my mental health. I still use Aveda products and have added in intensive conditioners, heat protectors etc. Last year I bought GHDs which have been revolutionary.

I've gone from a bi-annual ten quid haircut and hating looking in a mirror to really loving my hair. It's an integral part of me valuing myself. I can afford it as long as I'm careful, I put money aside each month to cover it. Worth every penny.

LaWench · 13/03/2024 08:54

About £690 I reckon. I got my first grey hair at 19 and now I'm in my 40s. I go and get my roots and blow dry done every 3 weeks £35. Twice a year I get a cut and some highlights thrown in for an extra £40.

Waitingfordoggo · 13/03/2024 08:56

Watchkeys · 13/03/2024 08:24

Nothing. Try learning to do it well, yourself. Hairdressers aren't rocket scientists. Anybody can learn how to do it. You can buy 3 way mirrors and there are plenty of free videos online to teach you. If you want to save money, you're a mug if you're paying for someone else to sort your hair out.

I’m completely ham fisted and can’t even style my hair. There’s absolutely no way I’d attempt to cut or highlight it 😂

Muddywalks34 · 13/03/2024 08:58

Aside from my Pantene 3-1 nothing, my daughters and I am learnt how to do basic cuts via YouTube during Covid,
they have been cutting my hair ever since. My daughter is 14 now, I think she would be quite offended if I went back to a hairdresser and to be honest she does a good job.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/03/2024 08:59

In total I’d guess it’s about £700/£800 but that’s because I get highlights and a cut every 3 months.

I don’t use expensive products generally apart from leave in conditioner and the odd expensive shampoo and conditioner.

I wish I could use GHDs as I know a few people who use them and I have them but they ruined my hair before and even my hairdresser said my hair was too weak to use them apart from special occasions.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 13/03/2024 09:01

So i do need a certain type of ‘expensive’ but awesome shampoo but excluding that…

£50 a haircut, and i get between 10 and 12 a year

my hair wax that i use is £8 a tin and lasts for about 6 to 8 weeks (i think)

so between £564 and £652, that is very rough

Shoxfordian · 13/03/2024 09:03

About 1200 on the hairdresser, and probably a bit extra for the purple blonde shampoo

Kalevala · 13/03/2024 09:03

About the same £150, five to six weekly barber cuts.

Superscientist · 13/03/2024 09:04

£0
I haven't been to a hairdressers in about 12 years as my partner cuts my hair
I have had my hair drier since I started uni in 2006
I use shampoo bars which are about £6 each and last 2 months each plus a leave in conditioner for after swimming. These are my only hair expenses. It gets washed once or twice a week
