To ask how much you spend on your hair a year

I mean hair cuts, colour, styling and special products. Over and above normal shampoo.
Just read on a thread where prices were mentioned casually and I am amazed at the costs.
I get my hair cut maybe three times a year. Spend less than £150 in total. My hair could look significantly better if I spent more I'm sure, and if you can afford it then no reason not to spend more.
Just wondering what is normal.

Hair cut every 6 weeks @£47 = £423 a year.
I don't dye it, use product, straighteners or a hairdryer.

fleurneige · 13/03/2024 12:09

3 or 4 cuts per year @ 48.

Mocoloco · 13/03/2024 12:11

5/6 cuts a year, max 4 colour and lowlights, I’m lucky my hair really holds on to the colour and no badger stripe appearing ever despite being in my 60s.

Bramley hair products, spray on conditioner

So about £700 a year

I don't like going to the hairdressers but I like to get my hair done. I know makes no sense, I don't enjoy the time there but like how it looks after.

I'm a natural brunette. My hair is usually waist length or longer, shorter if just been cut. Usually get it cut once or twice a year. Sometimes I do it myself and just take 3-4 inches off. Haven't had it done since last summer. It's £45 for cut and blow dry.

I am starting to get some greys now so know in the next few years I may have to start dying it which I'm dreading 😭 I haven't coloured my hair for nearly 20yrs. I won't attempt it myself so wld need a lot more regular trips to the hairdresser.

Mine was like this. As I started getting greys through I started getting highlights in a few different lighter colours. I also find that over the time between colours, my dyed hair gets lighter, so I'm now more of a dark blonde rather than brunette. I find that the greys are blending much nicer now and I don't get really obvious roots as the greys blend out with the blonde highlights and I've still got the original brunette in there as a mix too. This combination is why I can go over 3 months without a colour.

I often jokingly say I have no idea what my natural hair colour is now, but I think I'm kidding myself - "natural" will be a pure mix of brown and grey! Once the grey has really taken hold, I'll embrace it, but it's just too patchy at the minute, so the dark blonde is a good middle ground.

Less than £150. Expensive cuts and products seem to have little effect.

BiddyPop · 13/03/2024 12:19

Roughly €700 on cuts (every 6-10 weeks depending both on its state and the state of my/hairdressers' diaries).

I get a shampoo that is readily available in supermarket at home (not cheapest possible option but under €20 for both shampoo and conditioner). I probably add the serum once a year (€15), deep conditioner twice a year (€9/tub) and control crème twice a year (€8/tube), from the same range.

I might spend another €20-30 on random products in a year over and above that (a travel sized hair gum, a big tin hair gum or clay when the current runs out, very occasional hairspray or dry shampoo purchase) - actually let's just say €50 to be generous, just in case.

That's it for me.

coxesorangepippin · 13/03/2024 12:20

Haircut once a year

I buy a lot of shampoo, albeit the cheap stuff

Keychangeoff · 13/03/2024 12:30

Up until recently roughly 1k. I had started to notice how even very expensive highlights looked brassy and yellow after a few weeks on my own and on friends hair so found some bravery and quit cold turkey. I still have regular cut and blow drys but feel a bit silly now having spent all that money on trying to achieve a hair colour that isn't my own!

@shadyboots2024 or anyone else using a curl specialist - who do you use?

I’m happy to travel and make it a wee break - I’m in Lancashire but even a Bristol or London break sounds fabulous.

Starspangledrodeopony · 13/03/2024 12:56

About £3k a year on salon visits, not including any products or tools. I probably spend £1k on products…but I refuse to find out. 😬

Borborygmus · 13/03/2024 12:59

About £20.

Glad that its not just me...

lenalove · 13/03/2024 13:38

Get mine cut around 3x a year at £100 ish a pop - central london

Toblerbone · 13/03/2024 13:39

I get my hair coloured four times a year and also cut two of those times. Total annual cost approx £250.

Jayne35 · 13/03/2024 13:40

Barely anything, a couple of cuts costing about £80 a year, a few box dyes, maybe £50 a year and then probably another £75 on serums and mousse etc.

Outnumbered99 · 13/03/2024 13:43

£0.

popandchoc · 13/03/2024 13:44

Get my hair highlighted and cut around 4 times a year which works out to around £480 a year .

TomeTome · 13/03/2024 13:45

Nothing. I cut it myself, and oil/shampoo it. I get a lot of compliments so it must look ok. It’s long though so I expect easier to manage.

I'm in Lancashire! I use Hairking Callum in Urmston

BlueCupOrangeCup · 13/03/2024 13:46

£0.

My hair dries on its own and it's naturally straight so nothing needed.

I started to loathe paying £40 for a hairdresser to nibble the ends off and decided I'd be just as happy with a kitchen scissor job from my mum every 4-6 weeks! I trim my own fringe little and often and it works fine.

I also decided that I like my natural dirty blonde colour and stopped having professional highlights (hey if natural dirty blonde is good enough for Taylor Swift....and she looks great..) a friend even complimented my darker blonde natural shade this weekend! 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's saved me a fortune. But I have since developed an expensive luxury makeup habit so......

DoYouAgree · 13/03/2024 13:48

£280 in total on 4 x £70 visits to hair dressers which include, cut, half head highlights and toner.

Probably another £100 year on a fancy scalp scrub, and Olaplex products. I ask for them for Christmas and birthday as well so save a bit that way.

Libertysparkle · 13/03/2024 13:51

After seeing the post I calculated it. About £500 a year. 5 cuts and 2 colours. I thought it would be more.

I've been at the same hairdressers since 2000. And the same girl for most of that from a apprentice to now senior stylist.

It's the only thing that is just for me.

Sunnnybunny72 · 13/03/2024 13:51

About £600. NW. Cut and foils, can take up to three hours. Shoulder length and lots of it. Looks good for my age. Bog standard shampoos.
I never ever had any other beauty treatment however.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 13/03/2024 13:54

About £650.

Cut every 10 weeks (wash, cut, treatment, blow). No colouring these days as it was starting to wreck my fragile hair. Plus a bottle of heat protectant and a tub of elasticiser (both last me a year).

propropro · 13/03/2024 13:55

£20ish excluding shampoo etc? Depends if you count the new hairdryer.

Usually one haircut a year at the college (£15). Plus small amount of products (not expensive!), brushes etc.

I do buy nice shampoo and conditioner, if you count these maybe another £30 per year.
