To ask how much you spend on your hair a year

I mean hair cuts, colour, styling and special products. Over and above normal shampoo.
Just read on a thread where prices were mentioned casually and I am amazed at the costs.
I get my hair cut maybe three times a year. Spend less than £150 in total. My hair could look significantly better if I spent more I'm sure, and if you can afford it then no reason not to spend more.
Just wondering what is normal.

In the region of 60 to 80 quid a year. Not had a haircut yet this year and it's 20 quid every time I go.

I have my long hair trimmed at the local college because they do an excellent conditioning treatment that keeps my hair soft for weeks. Costs £15 for wash, cut, treatment and blow dry. The students spend time painting on the treatment and letting it activate under the heat dryer.

When I've had the treatment at the local salon, costing £50 for cut and conditioning treatment it just isn't as good as they just rub in the treatment quickly.

So I spend about £60 on haircuts each year. I haven't coloured my hair in years as I like my natural brown colour. I may treat myself to highlights to cover a few greys.

CassandraWebb · 13/03/2024 10:02

About £600. And I don't colour it or any fancy and only get a simple cut twice a year.

But I do go for a regular wash, treatment and blow dry because I have a neurological condition that means I find it hard to lift my arms to brush my hair, and I take medication that has really ruined my hair's condition.

I'd love to see photos that go with these crazy prices.

I spend £100 a year on me, dd15, and ds9. We all have hair halfway down our backs.

If you have short hair it needs more attention.
Crazy or not, it's my main treat to myself. I could find a cheaper salon but I've been there and had the disappointing results.

Oooh this is good to know! I will investigate our local college and see if they do this!

Cut and colour (no blow dry) every 10 weeks or so. Just use normal shampoo and conditioner (Dove mostly) plus coconut oil instead of styling products. My hair is curly, but I just use a bit of coconut oil, comb and leave it. It doesn't look amazing, but better than if I faff about with it too much.

For a special occasion I might get it straightened at the hairdressers. I have my own GHDs, but as my hair is thick, hairdressers do it so much better and it lasts longer.

Haydenn · 13/03/2024 10:04

I just buy shampoo and conditioner, I don’t spend anything else. I hate having my hair cut and having to sit there and make small talk. My idea of hell

AstronomyDomine · 13/03/2024 10:08

£73 every 8-10 weeks on cut and colour. I used to get box dyes and do it myself but god the faff! Cannae be bothered now - Saturday morning with my hairdresser, she provides coffee and sausage butty for breakfast (I always have the first appointment of the day). Then products which are essential for curly hair IMO. So around £500 or thereabouts.

ObliviousCoalmine · 13/03/2024 10:14

Probably about £500 give or take, depending on how restless I am.

fungibletoken · 13/03/2024 10:18

I used to get my hair cut every 8 weeks or so but found prices just kept creeping up and reached around £100 a pop for a basic cut and blow dry. I now trim my hair at home and do a few box dyes and highlight kits for about £20 or so over the course of the year. I started a little while before the pandemic so was quite lucky to have already got in the swing of things when lockdown hit. Also lucky that my go to is a blunt bob which is fairly low maintenance.

Hugmorecats · 13/03/2024 10:18

I seem to be on the lower end of what most people spend - under £100 a year. Get my hair cut about twice and also dye it myself at home about every six weeks. I don't especially enjoy going to the hairdresser, so that's a big motivator to dye it myself, even more than the cost!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/03/2024 10:22

About £40 every couple of months, now I’ve finally found a hairdresser I like. (It took me long enough!)
Just a cut and blow dry. So around £240 a year.

I also use John Frieda’s Go Blonder spray now and then, but a bottle of that lasts for ages.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/03/2024 10:23

About £800 on colour and cut. I do buy shampoo and conditioner and mask etc at the hairdressers but they last for ages. I'd say about £900 in total

KreedKafer · 13/03/2024 10:24

About £620 a year at the hairdresser. I get it cut every two months and I get a slice of vivid colour put through the front every three months.

I wash it with a very bland, colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner which are not expensive at all. I use a styling cream on it which costs about £20 but that lasts me about a year because you only need a teeny amount. I use Olaplex on it every fortnight or so, which probably costs me about £60 a year. So in total, excluding shampoo, maybe £700 a year?

I have a short and very precise haircut, so it needs regular cuts. Back in the distant days when I had long hair and no colour, I think I probably spent about £30 a year at the hairdresser, if that!

DilemmaDelilah · 13/03/2024 10:26

About £200. I have very short hair so have it cut roughly every 2 months, and I use an expensive purple shampoo.

@Haydenn this is how I feel too! All the sitting around and chatting and also having to look at myself in the mirror for ages, aargh

Blankspace35 · 13/03/2024 10:34

Around 1200, 900 of that is cut and colour every other month for £150 a time and the rest is styling products

RufustheFactualReindeer · 13/03/2024 10:36

I can get Prosecco at my hairdressers

it makes a 9am cut a lot more interesting…

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 13/03/2024 10:38

£5 on box colour which I use to do my own highlights with. I also cut my own hair.

Verv · 13/03/2024 10:38

A cut is 45 and I get around 6 per year, so 270.
Product, is about £15 per pot, so around £300 per year on hair in total.

Tessisme · 13/03/2024 10:43

Nothing. Sometimes SIL gives it a trim. Sometimes I cut a bit off myself. It's wavy, so my crappy cutting is only really noticeable when I straighten it. It's not about the money (well, ok it is a bit), I just hate every single thing about going to the hairdresser. I don't colour it. It is grey and seems to suit me and I keep it quite long.

Tohaveandtohold · 13/03/2024 10:45

It varies between £50 to £100 a year. I have Afro hair so I braid with extensions. I do the braid myself every 4 weeks so only have to buy the hair extensions. Otherwise it would have been more expensive.

shiningstar2 · 13/03/2024 10:53

Approx £1000 but worth it to me. Blow dry and roots every month. Cut about twice a year. Blow dry and styled about once a fortnight so all in all quite a lot for my money. Maybe foils once a year or so which puts it up a bit more. Can't manage my own hair. Thick curly frizzy. Love a sleek straightened blow dry, so if I'm going anywhere at all I always have it blow dried. Would rather have hair looked Ng ok than new clothes so don't spend much on clothes so it balances out.

EdgarsTale · 13/03/2024 10:53

£600-£800 a year. My hair is very important to me 😀

Lindy2 · 13/03/2024 10:54

I have a cut and blow dry every 2 - 3 months. I think it's about £40 each time.

I do my own colour at home to cover the greys. I'm sure the hairdresser could do a much more fancy colour but the box dyes I use seem just fine to me and are obviously a lot less expensive.
